Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, a feature length film based on the mock trailer that premiered during Grindhouse, is set to start filming in five weeks, as learned by website Gordon and the Whale during an interview with the star of the film, professional Mexican badass, Danny Trejo.
While Trejo let it be known that Machete was on the way, he also dropped an equally bad bit of news: despite widespread reports to the contrary, Danny Trejo has not been cast in Sylvester Stallone’s action flick throwback, The Expendables.

For awhile now many (read: I) have speculated that Trejo’s character in The Expendables would be one of the actor’s trademark thugs; many (again, read: I) were looking forward to Trejo throwing-down with the likes of Sly Stallone, Jason Statham and Let Li. In these sorts of situations, when hearing bad news, I usually say “Ah well, C’est la vie,” and let that be that – but in this case it really is a damn shame. If you haven’t seen the behind-the-scenes footage or hardcore posters, The Expendables is shaping up to look like a highlight reel of my favorite 90s action flicks. Having Trejo onboard would’ve been like icing on the world’s most kickass cake.
As for Machete, I’m glad to hear it will soon be underway. Robert Rodriguez has promised us three great films: Machete, the sci-fi flick Nevercrackers, and the long-delayed Sin City 2. Now that Machete is on track for its 2010 release, it’s a good sign that Rodriguez is going to deliver on at least one of his promises (with a little help from a friend, of course).
Are you psyched to hear that Machete is moving forward? Bummed to hear that Danny Trejo will not be one of The Expendables?

We should back this guy up! Has the talent, not some vanilla-midget-poser like we see now *cough*Shia*cough*, and hey, even if you don’t think he has the acting chops considering the cast, with the exception of Sly & Mickey, none of these guys are thesbians either. Have you seen The Natural in Scorpion King 2–atrocious!

I bought both Grindhouse movies on DVD and was kidna pissed that they didnt contain some stuff form the movies, like the SS Werewolf thing, wth!
Too bad. Trejo is the man. I would have loved to see him toe to toe with Statham Def Jam: Fight for NY style. If you haven’t played as Danny Trejo or Henry Rollins in that game your wrong. Machete is gonna be great.
Machete’s gonna be a blast. I’m interested in seeing if they even attempt to match the movie up with the scenes they filmed for the mock trailer.
Yeah, that sucks that he is not going to be in Expendables. He is perfect for that type of film (it appears anyway). RR makes so many kid-friendly movies he is turning me off, but Machete sounds like it has some promise.

While I absolutely loved Grindhouse in the theater,I think that Machete is just too much of a niche film for commercial success,just like Grindhouse,which totally flopped at the box office.I think it will be good though(in a bad way,of course)and I can’t wait to see it.

They’d have to shoot this on a pretty low budget for it to be financially successful. If they base it on the trailer, I’m sure they’ll be able to do it.

I have read that the main reason why Trejo was not in the Expendables is that he wanted more money. I mean, I know he is good and everything but Dany is not the type of person who should be asking for more fabulous moolah, you know.
Shame really, Dany wants more money whereas the guy in the youtube link I posted just wants the opportunity. Seriously folks, you should check the link, the guy is really good.

Did anyone notice that Trejo’s character in the Spy Kids movies was named ‘Machete’? Or that the character was said to have a shady past, in which really badass stuff went down?
