Spider-Man: Homecoming star Robert Downey Jr. is revealing why he thinks Tom Holland is the “perfect” Spider-Man. In less than a week, Holland will officially become the third actor in 15 years to star as the titular character in his own Spider-Man solo movie. Of course, director Sam Raimi kicked off the webslinger’s movie series with Tobey Maguire in the lead in the original Spider-Man trilogy, which ran from 2002-2007; while helmer Marc Webb cast Andrew Garfield to spin two tales of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and 2014.

Holland, on the flip side, eased into his first solo effort with a small but entertaining turn on Team Iron Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Having had the opportunity to work with Holland twice now, Downey says he has no doubts that his young co-star has all the qualities that add up to the complete Spidey. Downey talked about Holland’s qualities in a new interview with News Corp Australia Network.

In addition to calling Holland “a really good dude,” Downey says:

“Tom is the perfect man for the job. He’s enthusiastic, bright and gifted, a very physically talented guy by virtue of his dance and acrobatic background. He has just the right combination of elements required to bring a new take on the character.”

Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark Iron Man Confronts Tom Holland as Peter Parker in Spider Man Homecoming Robert Downey Jr. Reveals Why Tom Holland is Perfect Choice For Spider Man

While he’s long been a leader of The Avengers in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, the main function of Downey’s Tony Stark/Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming is that of Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s mentor. That’s the sort of relationship neither of the previous iterations of Spider-Man on the big screen had, which is undoubtedly why Holland’s take on the character feels so fresh to not only Downey, but to critics, who have showered the film with praise in early reviews. Audiences appear to be feeling the good vibes, too, as the film is projected to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million in its opening weekend. On top of that, the film is getting lots of buzz on social media.

Although Downey is play a supporting role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it appears that his larger-than-life presence clearly had a huge impact on Holland.

“Robert is a really lovely, down to earth kind of guy. He’s funny, he’s talented, he’s cool and he’s just a great guy to be around. He brings a very positive energy to set and makes everyone feel welcome. I am so grateful that he agreed to be in this movie because we really needed him to drive home the fact that we are bringing Spider-Man home to the MCU. He is the Godfather.”

It’s great to see that Downey and Holland have formed a solid working relationship, and clearly they have a mutual respect for each other’s talents will go a long way in the production of Avengers: Infinity War and beyond. With any luck that goodwill will continue at the box office.
