The Chicago Sun-Times recently spoke with the Iron Man star and managed to pry some details about the sequel to the hit film out of him; Movie Hole also asked Downey about Iron Man 2 and got more than they bargained for when the actor went on a tirade, slamming DC Comics and the runaway success of The Dark Knight.

“You want some plot secrets? Okay, here we go,” Downey said in an interview [with The Chicago Sun-Times] this weekend. “If he said he’s Iron Man in the first film, it’s one thing to say it and another thing to evolve to a point where you can live in a heroic fashion.”
Downey added, “Our goal is also more of the same in ‘Iron Man 2.’ We want to do what worked for us last time. I’m talking about telling more of the story of a guy put in extraordinary circumstances who has a family now and he’s dealing with these forces. In ‘Iron Man 2,’ you will be able to understand various points of view about him that are far-reaching while this guy is still grounded in reality.”
Ok, so basically they’re taking the Christopher Nolan approach: using the continuity established in the first film to logically expand on the plot threads left hanging at the conclusion of the origin story. Not too original, but hey, if the wheel works so well why re-invent it, right?

Downey pretty much echoed his sentiments about IM2 in an interview with Movie Hole, adding that
It’s pretty great and I think it’s going to be cool… [Iron Man has] a very rich feel, because it was a very simple movie, if you ask me. It was an origin story.”
And that’s about when the daggers started flying:
“My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart…and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I…still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f–king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? F–k DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”
Wow, tell us how you really feel Rob. (It may be time to start urine-testing this guy again.)
Seriously though, I don’t see why Downey is hating on TDK. Iron Man tore it up at the box office ($569 million worldwide as of today,) and basically put Downey back on Hollywood’s radar. What, did that stupid MTV movie award go to his head? Or maybe Marvel has a clause in their contracts which states that their stars have to bad-mouth DC whenever and wherever possible. Hell, maybe Downey is just doing his job
So what do YOU think about Robert Downey Jr.’s kind words for Iron Man 2? About his hateful words for The Dark Knight? You have my permission to sound off.

Give Smitty a star..:)
no, just over thought or as i put it they over shot the run way, hope they make another 1 and they (dc and marvel) dont stop there but go for more comic book films cause its nice to have a big film event to look forward to and even better when we get a good film out of it.
id really like to see afro samuria by taretino and rodreguze but maybe thats just me?
Id really like for Afro Samurai to no longer exist and for Tarentino to stop makin films.
wow so much hate says alot about you
@de ron assis: So they didn’t produce it in a simplified form so that it was easy to understand, however you “didn’t have to think at all” and “every character explained there thoughts and feelings like we are their therapist instead of just acting it out.” Is that a fair assessment of your evaluation?
@Daniel Fenwick
Couldn’t agree more.
@ the old man.
You really didn’t read what I said, so in more simpler terms for you to understand I feel it was simple to understand the film because they told you what to think all through the film, if you don’t agree cool but don’t ask if your gonna get upset about what I have to say.
oh and your predigested remark i thought best not to assume you was immaturely defending tdk by insulting me but guess thats all it was. if you liked the film good for you i just expected more of tdk.
So now please tell me what it was that made ” Ironman” better? Indulge me, I do have a point to make and it’s not being insulting. I just want to make sure I have your full explanation.
Batman and Iron Man are tearing us apart !!!
Both films were great come on now.
I liked them both for different reasons. Can’t wait for the dvds !!
It might sound strange, the way I’m asking this, but De ron has a point to make and I think an interesting opinion. I’m trying to encourage him to make it! I want him to be complete in his opinion. So please, what about “IronMan?” what was it that you liked better?
Dark Knight was obviously not trying to seem highbrow at all. Dark Knight had a deeper element to it and regardless of how deep you look into it, everyone gets something out of it. Iron Man was very good, but it was a lot more like Batman Begins. New character, new tech, cool action. But people want to see something different, something that makes them think differently and the Dark Knight delivered. We all fell in love with the joker’s deep and complex character. Downey saw was merely jealous of it’s success. I did love Iron Man, but I hope Iron Man 2 can take it to the next level of excellence that The Dark Knight achieved.
Spider-Man 3 is a far better movie that TDK,but no-one wants to admit that Spidey 3’s faults were ripped apart, but TDK’s have been ignored!Plus it was a boring grim-fest of pretentious twaddle!!!
@BRAVEHEART
Sorry, but your opinion (which you’re entitled to) doesn’t hold up to the vast majority.
Here are the scores from some of the biggest review sites online, and where possible I used user reviews instead of critics to avoid the argument concerning “elite” opinions.
All scores are from a scale of 0 to 10.
IMDB | RottenTomatoes | MetaCritic |Yahoo Movies
Spider-Man 3: 6 | 6.2 | 6 | 6.2
The Dark Knight: 9.2 | 9.1 | 9 | 9.2
That’s pretty definitive.
Vic
Yes, thank you Vic, Spider-man 3 was the worst of the three if you ask me. I like Spider-man, but everyone knows it is not even in the same league as TDK.
Spider man 3 gets more flack than it deserves but it wasn’t very good. It wasn’t a horrible film just wasn’t a good one. However it doesn’t compare to TDK or even the other two Spider man movies not even close. Though I will say it’s better than Batman & Robin. So maybe you just watched the wrong movie BRAVEHEART. We are talking about the one with Christian Bale and Heath Ledger not George Clooney and Arnold Schwareoineoiniengeoin. (sorry no idea how to spell that name.
Spider Man 3 was just as good as 2 and 1,,,,, all 3 Spider Man films are great !!!!!!!!!!!
Huh? Are you serious SM3 just as good as two or one?
it’s funny that Robert Downey Jr. said the Dark Knight is too sophisticated when he himself tends to sound so sophisticated
This conversation’s STILL going?! Man… you outdid yourself on this topic Vic!
Call me crazy, Daniel,,, S3, had some damn good action scenes !!!
All 3 films had some great stuff, all 3 films had some Mary Jane stuff,,,,
What are ya gonna do ???
SM3 was extra cheesy had to many story lines and failed at properly telling any of them. It had to many characters and failed to manage more than half of them properly.
On a positive note SM3 did have one of the most beautiful scenes in a movie with Sandman when he first becomes sandman.
To the old man. Sorry for jumping the gun but thats just what it sounded like to me any way I preferred iron man because allot of the time simplicity is the key to a good film. I like that the film linked the shield, war machine and little things like that, it even had a ghost face killah reference but thats a hip hop thing not for everyone but the film did what it said it was going to and entertained, if they decided to take the clever route like tdk it would have been cool if they delivered. Its kinda hard to explain what i exactly liked in ironman but i had more fun both times watching iron man and more into where they are going to take it next. although that makes it sound like i didn’t like tdk because the seriousness of it but thats not true, i liked tdk but the clever serious side it tried to bring to batman was good but over drawn and over explained. do you know what i mean?
oh and about the spiderman thing spiderman 3 was not good although it had some amazing scenes in it especially how they portrayed venom the visual graphics on him where spot on.
spiderman 2 was the best of the 3 hopefully they learned from the mistakes from 3 and make 4 decent
Venom did look really good however was written very poorly given next to nothing on screen time and way underdeveloped. Also two really picky side notes that probably only matter to me but he should of been saying we and Us I think it’s a very important character treat and actually brings depth to the character. They also should of morphed the voice more it wasn’t toyed with enough and wasn’t even remotely scary or powerful it just sounded like Topher.
Again I just want to point out that yes,Spidey 3 had faults, but so does TDK,I don’t care if everyone else has been fooled into the Bat-Hype!
Spidey 3 had great moments and Sandman was perfect. But that whole Two-Face story was absolute mince in TDK,plus the effects to create it were crap!
In the UK one of our biggest movie critics Jonathon Ross,is also a huge comic book fan…he is the only guy that dared to say the truth that TDK is a let down from a super-hero movie fans view, and that he couldn’t see what all the fuss was about!
Batman sucks!!nuff said!!
By saying Batman Sucks at the end you ruined your credibility. You professed that you naturally hate Batman in general so you would most likely never have liked the movie anyway.
Every single movie in existence has faults there is no such thing as the perfect movie. However TDK is consider by the VAST MAJORITY of people to be the best hero flick the comic flick with the least amount of faults. SM3 is considered by the VAST majority to be either ok or simply bad and to have an exceptional amount of faults.
OMG there is this one critic in the UK he didn’t like TDK. Seriously your makin a big fuss that there was a critic in the uk that didn’t like it? Look up some of the top movies of all time there is always someone who doesn’t like a certain movie. There is always gonna be at a couple critics bashing a movie no matter how great most consider it. Fact of life.
“One of our biggest movie critics Jonathan Ross” seriously? I didn’t get caught up in the hype but was disappointed with parts of the film, Jonathan Ross isn’t exactly someone id ask about films just cause he has a few comic books, his reviews are very inconsistent and has rated some really poor films.
Spiderman 3 was bad it had the best villain out of the 3 and still fail to deliver and Daniel fenwicks right venom does in the comics and should say us in the film cause the suits a living being.
the way they brought him into the film was pretty much all they could do as they couldn’t do the super wars where he finds the suit in a room out in space while fighting a super war with all the heros vs villains but the way they used venom so little is probably a mistake they now realize and are trying to make up for by making the venom film
I’m no Ross fan, but when he covers movies he is very good, and he is a fanboy. He did an excellent show about Steve Ditko.
At the same time, have disagreed with him before. I do remember him refusing to review something his wife was involved with, which, while I understood I did think: you’re a reviewer, review it! Also when he covered that fantasy movie and went on about how good Ricky Gervais was, when only had a small part. That annoyed me.
So he is one of the best known critics over here, but wouldn’t hold his view up too highly. (Have a feeling he loved Wanted.)
Personally much more a fan of the Good Doctor, Mark Kermode. Mind you, I’m not sure he gets superhero movies. He keeps complaining about big fight scenes at the end. That’s the best bit!
Having seen Spiderman 3 recently, I can say I don’t think it’s that bad, especially when compared to Fantastic Four, but it is a messy picture. Losing the ‘evil’ Parker strutting his stuff would be a huge improvement.
ha ha yeah your right i think he probably liked wanted too lol
lol i seen ironman
