Iron Man 3 Spoilers Robert Downey Jr. Signs With Marvel For The Avengers 2 & 3

Just weeks before Comic-Con 2013, and just weeks after Iron Man 3 solidified its position among the top five grossing films of all-time, Disney and Marvel Studios are planning even further ahead than ever before. Last week Disney claimed two more release date slots for unannounced Marvel films coming in 2016 and 2017 and today they’ve officially announced that Robert Downey Jr. will continue to have a key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel is happy to announce that – after reports of tough negotiations – Robert Downey Jr. has officially signed to return as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in both (still untitled) The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.

Iron Man 4 – at least at this point in time – is not part of the plan for RDJ as he aims to clear up his schedule to pursue other projects. Although Shane Black teased the idea of Iron Man 4 & 5 with Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow’s mixed responses about more installments held true and Marvel aims to focus on expanding the MCU and introducing more characters from the Marvel Comics library, beginning next year with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Despite Marvel holding the (for negotiation purposes) position that they’d be willing to recast Tony Stark, the “I Am Iron Man” quote from the film series couldn’t be truer. Robert Downey Jr. is the poster boy for Marvel Studios’ success and replacing him would be as challenging as it would be disappointing so it was inevitable he’d return in some capacity. Joss Whedon’s praise of the actor and his admittance of having every intention of working with him again for The Avengers 2 – which begins shooting early next year – played out just as we expected and the world can breathe a sigh of relief that he’ll suit up once again when Earth’s Mightiest are forced to join forces in summer 2015.

As for the idea of cameos or guest appearances in other Phase Two and Phase Three films, don’t count on it. From the get-go, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige made it clear that the next set of films are more standalone, and unlike in Phase One where it was important to emphasize the shared continuity and build towards the main event in The Avengers, it’s no longer necessary with the brand earning its place in pop culture.

Iron Man 3 stood entirely as its own, and while Thor: The Dark World takes place partly on Earth it may follow a similar isolated story pattern while rumor has it Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the story that will bridge The Avengers 1 & 2. After that, Marvel ventures into unexplored territory with its “twisted” space-faring adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy which is not only a standalone story as well, but features an entirely new roster of heroes and villains, leading up to The Avengers 2 and then another new character’s origin story in Ant-Man.

With the Iron Man solo series on break for the forseeable future, the timing makes sense that with Phase Three of the MCU, Ant-Man steps into take over the first chapter duties.

Now to get Don Cheadle back as Rhodey. Should he (War Machine) get a part in The Avengers sequels?

More on this story (and Ant-Man) as it develops.

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. yes please bring Mr. Cheadle back as War Machine/Iron Patriot

    • So is RDJ coming back to play Iron Man beyond Avengers 3, or not?

  2. I’m going to celebrate with a bottle of fine scotch. Scotch, scotch, scotch, I love scotch!!

  3. what is the point of a 4th iron man movie Disney sucked the life out of it in the third one it is a shame that it had to come to what it did in the end i hope that Stan Lee regrets selling his company even though he is getting up there in his years…why would you not sell it to someone with a reputation for superhero movies I am boycotting the avengers 2 because they will screw that up too…also not looking forward to star wars by Disney

    • @joe – Dude you’re too negative and lack optimism, sure there was some missteps with “IM3″ and it should have been better. But I can’t doubt ‘Whedon’s’ abilities, he’s not ‘Shane Black’ bro.

      • Here here! Excellent rebutle. Shane Black did what he could with a film and character he knew nothing about. The FX were even handled not by Industry Light & Magic, but by SEVENTEEN different FX departments.

That’s a ton of FX departments.
The FX in IM3 were right on point, good sir.

Also, there were mis-steps, as pointed out by good boy above me, but to say it was a “horrible” film, or even a bad one considering what we were givin with IM2, its safe to say it was better than IM2.

With this news comes a rejoice for fans of RDJ’s Tony Stark.
I’m hoping Whedon’s comments of stark having at least one more suit to use is true for TA2 and 3. Would be really sad not to have him suit up and only be a “public figure” of sorts. He may even use the newly un-flawed Extremis virus that he got to perfect at the end of IM3.

        • @nick – Trust me we will see ‘Stark’ suit as ‘Iron Man’ in “Avengers 2 & 3″, that’s as sure as day and night, no worries whatsoever there.

          • Yes, but.. will he be piloting the suit, or phyiscally wearing it?

I hope that your right on the money.
What type of threat would make him suit up once more.

Let’s look at what we have here:
            - Tony gets the shrapnel taken out of his chest, he kept the new element created in Iron Man 2, with him and threw the Arc Reactor into the Ocean.
            - Perfected the Extremis-Virus, and had a suggestion from Harley to make his suits/suit in “Sealth” mode.
            - Whedon’s tease of IM having more or at least one suit at his disposal.
            - Robert Downey, Jr.’s love of the character, even if he was under-utlizied in Iron Man 3 (speaking of the Iron Man suit) speculating that TS doesn’t need the suit to be a hero. Well proven.
            - RDJ signging on for a 2 picture deal to have a role as TS/IM in The Avengers 2, and 3.

I’m sure you’re right, and him suiting up would be a prioity since people had a major grip about him not using the suit (30% of the film) in Iron Man 3.

            2013: Iron Man 3 – 2015: The Avengers 2; 2 year gap.
Tony Stark would have perfected the Extremis perfectly, and made it so that his suit’s were virtually indestructable to major major heat (excess of 3,000 degrees)

            That’s the dream, the hope.
            The anticipation!!!!

  4. I was disappointed by Iron Man 3 but you all want to know why i was disappointed with it, it wasn’t so much the story and it though i was extremely bummed out by it the Mandarin wasn’t the nail in cauffin. The reason that i was disappointed was because i wanted to see a sequel to the Avengers not Iron Man thats what really through me off, so in the end of the day it was mostly my expectations that knocked me out had i gone into the movie theater just wanting Iron Man and not the whole gang i probably would have had a better time with it, wonder if that through any one else off with Iron Man 3. Overall the film was good i just wanted Avengers 2 which did a number on my rating for the movie. I’m more that thrilled to hear Downey Jr will return as Iron Man its wonderful news for me.

    • Iron Man 3 was not Avengers 2, it never advertised, claimed, or ever was supposed to be so I’m not sure where those expectations came from. There is an actual Avengers 2, it comes out in 2015.

      • @Speshlk37 – Overall “IM3″ was a good film in my opinion, it just wasn’t a great film. I was’nt expecting “Avengers 2″ either, how could you with only one member from it. I liken ‘Avengers’ to the equivalent of the ’92 ‘Dream Team’, yes ‘MJ’, ‘Magic’, ‘Bird’, “Pip’, ‘Barkley’, ‘Mailman’ etc we’re all mega stars, but when you put all those hall of famers together that team became very special and unique, even though it’s not real life I feel the same way about “The Avengers”.

  5. Robert downey Jr.better be in iron man 4 I LOVE YOU ROBERT DOWNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • There may not be an Iron Man 4 until AT LEAST.. 2020..

      Let’s look at the slate..

      2015: The Avengers 2/Ant-Man
      2016: Unknown and Unknown
      2017: Unknown and Unknown
2018: Unknown and The Avengers 3?
      2019: Unknown and Unknown – Phase 4.

      • @Nick – I would say BLACK PANTHER, THOR 3, DR. STRANGE & CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 should pretty much be shoo-ins for 4 of those spots. The other 3 spots i’m not sure of, it’s probably between HULK, MS. MARVEL, INHUMANS, NAMOR & possibly a GOTG sequel if the first film is a big hit. I’m just guessing though, who knows for sure, LOL.

  6. Glad to hear RDJ is going to be playing Tony Stark for TA2 and TA3! IM4 is a long ways down the road from this whole thing, if they even decide to make it.

I’m of the opinion that the main reason Tony was able to remove the shrapnel from his chest was because of a perfected Extremis Virus…after all, it has already been confirmed that Extremis will return…why not with the “Genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist”?

I’m kind of wondering-hoping that the element that Stark created in IM2 plays some bigger role in the MCU than it did in IM2…I mean, Tony is able to synthesize some element that his father stated “will change the world”, and the only function it serves is to cure him of his palladium problem? Something doesn’t add up there.

Then again, this is movies we’re talking about, nothing adds up with these things.

Also, I am not entirely sure that the “Mandarin”, AKA Killian, is in fact dead-I mean, think about it, he can survive an entire Iron Man armor being blown up in a big explosion whilst attached to him but he can’t survive a missile being blown up in his proximity?

  7. downey….you has to come in iron man 4

  8. i a mlooking forward to see the avenger 2&3 and plus iron man should continue with #4 he has yet to tell more of his story
i love iron man and sure would love too see more of him played by RDJ he is in a way the true heart of iron man i dont know any other actor that could take his place in the iron man character

  9. RAJ is the ONLY Iron Man. He’s perfect for this part. Hens always been a quality actor loaded or not, but nobody can replace as Tony Stark.

  10. i think so that iron man 4 should be released and have a craze of that movie

  11. Yet, he didn’t sign for the Iron Man 4. I don’t think Robert will still be part of the fourth installment. According to another article Iron Man 4 is on the works and will be having a major casting switch.
