Cowboys And Aliens header1 Robert Downey Jr. Wont Play Cowboys & Aliens [Updated]

Adding to this week’s trend of superhero bailouts in the form of Stuart Townsend leaving Thor and the entire cast and crew of Spider-Man 4 bailing out with Sony rebooting the franchise, another superhero has dropped out of a project. Well, not exactly, but Robert Downey Jr. and has removed himself from director Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.

According to a source of the LA Times, Downey has left and DreamWorks is now searching for their new lead to ride into the sunset full of UFOs. Favreau will still be directing and the plan is to begin principal photography this year for a summer 2011 release.

With RDJ out, a replacement is needed for the role of Zeke Jackson, the hero who leads the gunslingers of the wild west against the pesky extra-terrestrials.  DreamWorks will have to find a popular star to fill those shoes.

We’re not sure yet on the exact reason for Downey’s dropping out but it’s reasonable to assume he may just have too much on his plate going forward. With this holiday’s Sherlock Holmes kicking off another great franchise, there could be a rush from the studio for a sequel which they spent a lot of time and effort setting up for in this first installment. [Update: We have confirmation that the Sherlock Holmes sequel is the reason that Downey Jr. dropped out of this film.]

That’s not all for the comeback star however, as he also has at least another two leading roles in Marvel Studios’ franchise as Tony Stark/Iron Man after Iron Man 2 debuts this May. Downey simply may not have time to dedicate two a third potential franchise.

The sci-fi western will surely be a hit with such major players involved as Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci and Damon Lindelof penning the script, producing alongside Steven Spielberg. And of course, Jon Favreau will be helming the project as director.

Who do you think can take over the lead role in Cowboys & Aliens?

Iron Man 2 kicks off this summer on May 7, 2010. Cowboys & Aliens may start shooting in July.

  1. Well that sucks.

  2. According to Wikipedia the Sherlock Holmes sequel begins Pre-Production in March. Now, that’s not to say it couldn’t be a fabrication, but that could also be the reason, I would assume?

  3. well that sucks. RDJ and Favs are great together.

  4. Get Bradley Cooper or Brad Pitt. They can pull of Redneck Chic and get butts in the seats.

  5. i dont like RDJ very much so im fine with it. id rather see christan bell, russel crow, kurt russel, bruce willis, ethan hawk, william dafoe, brad pitt.

  6. Maybe it’s because he sobered up from the Holmes after-party and asked himself “Did I really just agree to be in a movie called ‘Cowboys & Aliens’?” It was at this junction that he swore off drinking that Gordon with a twist of lemon that he saw in the Bond movie.

  7. @Copperknob39…

LOL You may be right about that.

Personally, although he made a rather good Sherlock Holmes, I just couldn’t picture RDJ in a cowboy hat fighting against aliens in the Wild, Wild West.

As for who should be the lead … Brad Pitt’s done a Western (Assassination of Jesse James), so he might be a good choice.
Bradley Cooper could also be a good choice, although I’ve never seen him pull off “Redneck Chic” on screen yet.

Josh Lucas, anyone? He hasn’t had a decent film in quite a while.

  8. Lol
I’ve got to see Holmes if its that good.

  9. How about Nathan Fillion? He played a Space Cowboy in Firefly/Serenity and this is a chance to play a Cowboy fighting creatures from space.

    Thoughts?

  10. @hudson…

I wouldn’t mind seeing Kurt Russell and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles, along with Sam Elliott. Although Christian Bale and Russell Crowe were in the remake of 3:10 To Yuma, I was kinda underwhelmed with their performances in that film.

The reason why I mentioned Josh Lucas is he did pull off a semi-Redneck Chic role in Sweet Home Alabama, even though it was a romantic comedy. So, he could probably pull off Redneck Chic in Cowboys And Aliens.

  11. @Jim5111

I have to say I would love nothing more than to see Nathan Fillion finally get his big chance on a franchise. That might just be because I am a big homer for him :)

  12. Do you like taking photos? How does one go from a hobby photographer to taking photos as a career check out http://bit.ly/5iBdRM they have a online program with scholarship! If you like photography then you should check it.

  13. @Jim5111
Nathan Fillion, OMG yes. He would be perfect for this role and given the little homage to Mal he did in Castle would probably revel in it.

  14. i actually think nathan fillion would be a great choice.

  15. @ Pretty much all who have commented so far

Brad Pitt and Nathon Fillion … awesome choices! Pitt was the first name that popped into my head but after hearing Fillion’s name, I’d totally but up for that too. As far as Pitt is concerned tho, I was thinking of something along the lines of his character in Inglorious Basterds with a cowboy hat haha.

  16. I assume that Cowboy and Aliens is an action/ comedy movie with RDJ and Jon Favreau involved. I think Ryan Reynolds would fit perfectly in that role. Plus the other 10- 15 other movies he’s suppose to be doing haven’t happened yet.

  17. Nathan Fillion is the one,he deserves his chance Ryan R already has to comic book movies already.

  18. The Sherlock Holmes sequel is the reason RDJ bailed on this.

    Vic

  19. I could see Nathan Fillion. Or how about Josh Brolin?

  20. Tony StaR? JK JK JK

This disapoints me. I was looking forward to seeing RDJ in this role. Oh well, i hope they have a good actor replace him.

  21. Haaa. I made a joke about a spelling mistake in the article(which i dont care about, im not THAT kind of person) and i made a spelling mistake in my post.
    LOLZ :P

  22. I'm ok with this to be honest. I'd much rather see a sequel to Sherlock Holmes instead of seeing Cowboys And Aliens.

  23. I just couldn't picture RDJ wearing a cowboy hat and fighting aliens in the wild West (sorry… even my suspension of disbelief was pushed to the limit with that idea), but he made a very good Sherlock Holmes. Now that a sequel to Sherlock Holmes is pretty much a “go” at this point, I'm glad he took a pass on Cowboys and Aliens.

Besides, I'd love to see Nathan Fillion get a good movie franchise, and since he played a space cowboy in Firefly/Serenity, to see him in the lead role in Cowboys and Aliens would be awesome.

  25. I think you’ve got to trust the judgement of Robert Downey Jnr here. He’s proved himself to be a versatile and intelligent actor who knows the direction that he wants his career to follow. Personally I would watch him in anything, but I only do this because I know he will only take jobs that get the best out of him.
