Robert Downey Jr. Wants Mel Gibson in The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Mel Gibson Robert Downey Jr Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. Wants Mel Gibson in The Marvel Cinematic Universe

If there are two certainties in Hollywood, one is that nobody’s perfect and another is that people love comeback stories. After years of drugs, rehab stints and even a little jail time, Robert Downey Jr. became the biggest – and one of the most beloved – movie stars in the world. Arguably this should have happened years before, sometime shortly after the actor earned an Oscar nomination for Chaplin in the early ’90s.

The reason for Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback success? His talent speaks for itself and while his role in Shane Black’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang certainly earned RDJ respect on his return tour, it was director Jon Favreau and the decision-makers at young Marvel Studios in 2007 that put the actor back on the map when casting him as Tony Stark in their first self-financed production, Iron Man. After a second Oscar nomination and starring in three of the top five grossing movies of all-time, Robert Downey Jr. wants to re-pay some of the debt for the support he received during his hard times.

A key to RDJ’s recovery was his support group, namely his wife Susan Downey, and his friends in Hollywood. Two of those friends, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, were present in 2011 when Robert Downey Jr. received the prestigious American Cinematheque Award, an honor presented annually to “an extraordinary artist currently making a significant contribution to the art of the Moving Picture.” Now, RDJ wants to return the favor and have Gibson and Foster join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with appearances in The Avengers: Age of Ultron or its untitled followup, the last two films on his extended contract.

The news broke on New Year’s day from Radar Online who claim to have a source revealing Robert Downey Jr.’s latest attempts to bring some of his best friends into the Marvel family much like he did in helping pick Shane Black to direct Iron Man 3 and getting a role in it for his pal Ashley Hamilton. Gibson halted his career when infamously arrested in 2006 for driving under the influence and following the act with that famous anti-Semitic rant – words that the source believes practically demolish any chance of Marvel’s high-ups giving any thought to having Mel Gibson show up in a Marvel Studios production.

Jodie Foster is an easier sell and popped up in one of this summer’s biggest sci-fi productions with a key role in Elysium. As for Gibson, he had big part in 2013′s Machete Kills when director Robert Rodriguez cast him, and Sylvester Stallone is similarly giving the actor (and Oscar-winning director) an opportunity with a role in The Expendables 3 – one of Screen Rant’s most anticipated movies in 2014. With rival studios Twentieth Century Fox and Sony Pictures making major franchise announcements in recent weeks, Marvel Studios’ otherwise high profile casting confirmations of Vin Diesel, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson partly got lost in the shuffle, especially with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment dominating headlines as of late with rumors of Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson all potentially having roles in Batman vs. Superman.

Perhaps to compete in the war for marketing buzz with names and talent listed above, bringing in veteran talents including Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson could be legitimately appealing for Marvel Studios, who aren’t shy in giving talent with troubled pasts a chance, like Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke. What roles could they possible play in The Avengers 2 or 3 if that’s what RDJ is gunning for? According to Radar Online’s source, Downey Jr. tried to land Mel Gibson a role as the President in Iron Man 3 but Marvel wasn’t interested. Maybe they didn’t see Air America (a film starring RDJ and Gibson)?

Two things we can say for sure are that Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson are close friends with Robert Downey Jr. and that RDJ fights for his people – something several reports had him doing during contract negotiations for stars of The Avengers who apparently rallied behind him as a leader of sorts. Here’s what RDJ said to a cheering crowd about Mel Gibson – the surprise guest he chose to present the award – when the pair were on stage in 2011 for his acceptance of The American Cinematheque Award:

“Unless you are without sin – and if you are, you are in the wrong fucking industry, you should forgive him and let him work.”

And he later continued:

“This is my fuckin’ time. Mel and I have the same lawyer, same publicist and same shrink. I couldn’t get hired and he cast me. He said if I accepted responsibility – he called it hugging the cactus – long enough, my life would take meaning. And if he helped me, I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to assume the next guy would be him.”

What do you think? Should Marvel Studios consider Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster for roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and if so, what characters could/should they play?

  1. Mel Gibson can be Zemo for Captain America, or even better… Kang the Conqueror.
Jodie Foster would make a perfect Abigail Brandt, the agent in charge for S.W.O.R.D., heck even Mel could play as the director of that space S.H.I.E.L.D. Henry Gyrich

Personally I don’t think anyone should judge a person’s talent just because of his personality… I mean he might has his own point of view about something, doesn’t mean you can’t respect his works just because of it. Everyone has their own point of view on different matters, even the people who post comments here, but that doesn’t mean we should just simply hate any who thinks different like we do, right? I don’t have ANY problem with Mel, he’s a damn fine actor… his personal issues are his to deal and handle, not mine to judge or interfere.

  2. Just when i thought this movie could’t get any worse. They get get a washed up actor who’s career should have stayed dead.

    • Adam Sandler’s in the movie now too?

      • +1 well played sir

      • Bwaaaa Haaa Haaa!!
        Nice!

    • You’re a washed up actor who’s career should have stayed dead. Doesn’t feel so good, does it? You may apologize now.

  3. There is one thing I’ve learned though all of these CBMs fan castings, is there are no end to sheer number of characters in both DC and Marvel… even a splintered Marvel.

So, lets say there is reason to believe the Sackoff/Danvors/Captain Marvel rumors – and I hope there is. Gibson would be a pretty damn fine choice for an older Mar-Vell/Walter Lawson and tie into the passing of the mantle that I think a good Captain Marvel story would include.

  4. Mel gibson for thanos, or mel gibson for the beyonder in avengers 3: secret wars XD, please make it happen robert!!!

  5. I have no issue with RDJ supporting Mel Gibson – I just take issue with comparing the two. Having heard the Mel tapes, RDJ’s bout was clearly self-destructive (drugs, jail, rehab), with, in the end, no one to blame, except himself, nor was it thrown at anyone else. Mel, on the other hand, purposely sought to verbally target other races (which may have started with his father’s teachings, but at some point, you man up and start thinking for yourself), in order to hurt his ex-gf. Was it wrong to tape him and release the tapes? Sure, but that said, does his real-life nuttiness diminish his ability as an actor? Yes and no – yes, because some won’t separate one from the other (the man from the role), and no, because others see his personal demons as his own, and irrelevant to his work.

As for Jodie, phenomenal actress, but unless she has a major role, she has too much ability and presence, to be in a film with so many characters in it already. The only other option for her, would be part of an after-credits sequence, teasing her character for the next film.

    • Well said.

  6. I am personally a fan of Mel Gibson and he could sore like the megestic eagle if he is given a chance so here are villain roles he could play in both marvel and DC movies

    MARVEL
    Doctor doom
( can’t really think of anything else in marvel I just know he can play doom)

    DC
    Lex luthor

    • I agree. Hollywood keeps giving Charlie Sheen work and he’s more of a train wreck than Gibson and RDJ were combined.

      • Sheen more of a train wreck than Gibson…ok. So a bigoted misogynist is worse than a self-destructive person to you. Right.

      • Charlie Sheen play Paste Pot Pete, because he fits that role 100%. Mel Gibson, did he call for Jews to be mistreated or Israel to be destroyed? The man was stupid, but clearly he is not Mahmud Ahmadinejob, either. Forgive him and let him work.

  7. I really hope this happens. But I don’t know, is not Marvel who calls the shots, it’s actually Disney, and Disney must be filled with jews, (probably even) the same jews that Gibson rambled about. In the end, I hope everyone could just love each other.

  8. Hmmm, I wouldn’t want to see Jodie Foster in a Marvel movie. I don’t like her, never will.

Mel on the other hand. I would like to see him play a villain. Maybe Dr. Doom, or Beta Ray Bill.

  9. Gibson will never get a shot at the MCU. It wasn’t just the Xenophobic Anti-Semitic comments, in a town that has, historically, a large Jewish hierarchy. It was also the threats against his ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant with his child! People act as if it was a one off rant whilst he was arrested, there where multiple occasions which showed people what his personal beliefs were. The Passion Of the Christ wasn’t just the Catholic teachings as he tried to say, but became in hindsight, his own personal beliefs open for all to see.

Can you imagine the negative media hype against any movie he appeared in (see “The Beaver”) which in view of the fact that Marvel, and especially Disney, are keen to show the Marvel Universe, and ultimately the Disney Universe, as Family Friendly for male and female fans (extended scenes of Tom Hiddleston weren’t really shot for male viewers.)

Jodie Foster’s main contention would be salary. Pure and simple. At the end of the day she is a multiple Oscar winner and would either be after a large fixed up front salary or a percentage of the Gross. Something RDJ couldn’t do when initially offered IM. He was a risk that paid off big style (aren’t the IM movies about 3 times more financially successful than other MCU movies) but was still a risk.

And people will forgive alcoholics and drug users, who quit, as it’s just an addiction that you’ve beaten “heroically”, but when you come out with the stuff Mel Gibson did, repeatedly, people will always think that’s what he’s truly like!

    • Here here!

  10. Wow mel gibsion is still alive? Hahaha well this is the funniest thing I heard since the rock was gonna be the next gl accroding to rumor.

    • I live in LA, act when I get the opportunity and I can tell you with all of my being, image is everything in this town…look how long it took the guy who played Pee wee herman to get a shot in a decent movie, career has still never been the same. In this town its extremely hard to differentiate the actor from their personal life…unfortunately.

Mel made his mistakes, not saying he shouldent be forgiven but he also has to live with the consequences. Disney & marvel wont be bullied…not even by RDJ. I think Mel should just keep working quietly…being grateful for what he has, most actors dont get a second chance.

  11. Why not? It’s freakin Mel Gibson!

  12. Maybe Mel Gibson as Wonder Man? Idk

  13. Just sharing as it’s not my place to judge…

The following articles are interesting, especially looking at how their professional lives have turned out. Not on these lists is Roman Polanski, who received 7 Oscar Nominations (and won 3) for ‘The Pianist’ in 2002, 25 years after his arrest in 1977 for the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl (although he plea-bargained for a lesser charge of unlawful sex with a minor).

  14. Mel is a guy who don’t car this political correctness.
    F.J.

    • I like Mel Gibson (or at least the person that I thought he was based on his movies and interviews) and I like the work that he has done in movies.

Having said all this, I’m very much against racism. I think that we all have to decide whether we would choose -given a choice between two talented actors or directors or employees- whether we would choose the person who has expressed very racist views or the person who has not.

I think that we move society forward, in the right direction, when we choose the person who is an excellent actor or director or employee, who has not expressed racist views.

Having heard Mel Gibson’s rants, I would not choose him for this role.

I would be surprised if Marvel Studios, who (I suspect) want their movies to appeal to every race, color and creed of people, would hire Mel Gibson.

But then again, I could be wrong.

      • Precisely. I’m still a big Mad Max fan. But the Lethal Weapon movies lost their luster when Danny Glover said that he and Mel Gibson were never friends and that Mel wouldn’t interact with him off camera.

      • For Jude you are Goy read something about this religion and you comes to some conclusions.
Political correctness is a b******* and bacterium of Karl Marx.

  15. the reason for Downey’s “comeback” is he got clean and sober…except for Chaplin he was uninsurable in any lead role..

  16. No…

  17. It would be wrong and ironic for him to play any character that is allied with the Nazi’s or Germans from the comics in any way. Disney wont want that negative correlation. But…they could use him,IMO, as one of the following.

    Taskmaster
    Punisher
    Vision
    Namor
    Klaw

  18. This is just another thing that’s wrong with Hollywood. Stunt casting and nepotism casting.

Cast the best person for the role. Period. If it’s Mel, so be it. But don’t give him a role just for the sake of giving him a role.

Unless it’s the role of the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters janitor, of course. ;)

    • I see what you did here. LOL

  19. Hell, lets just throw in Chuck Norris too.

  20. If RDJ is the reason Black was hired for IM3 then nobody should listen to him ever again

    • Thank you!!!

  21. Doesn’t marvel have the rights to punisher again (mel gibson)

  22. Mel Gibson definitely deserves a second chance I actually really miss seeing him in top tier movies he is a really talented actor I just think he should stay away from directing movies I think the stress was to much a might have drove him to drink a lot good luck Mel.

  23. I’ve heard that Disney used to be anti-Semitic and racist, so maybe they wouldn’t have too big a problem employing an actor with a similar past. Maybe the MCU just found/were given their next big star (of David… too far?).

  24. I support RDJ and Mel Gibson in this! Seriously, on what basis is Hollywood playing God? They make movies making fun of other cultures and races and then all of a sudden, they have a huge problem when someone makes fun of Jews? Are you kidding me?! Sacha Baron made fun of Arabs and Kazakhs, while TRYING to make jokes, and he still gets movies? Mel is one of the most talented actors and filmmakers in the world. And if RDJ feels that he will be a great addition to MCU, then he will be.

  25. Mel should be namor

  26. Mel Gibson for Adam Warlock!

    • Lol. I was just kidding, maybe task master or Dormammu or Modo for Dr.Strange movie!

  27. Gibson should have been cast as Batman.

  28. You guys the obvious choice.would.be. the original Nick FurySr.
Just keepin it real now ..

  29. This racist sucks as a actor and a human being. A woman beater and a coward.. his career should stay dead.
