With The Avengers nearly out the door, theatrically-speaking, the next major motion picture on Marvel’s slate is Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr. and co-written and directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).
Recently, RDJ discussed the possibility of another actor replacing him as Tony Stark down the line. He also addressed the casting rumors regarding Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Andy Lau.
On how he would feel if Iron Man were to be recast – courtesy of MTV – RDJ said:
“I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes. I wonder who’s playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you’re here to tell me?”
On how much longer he plans to stick it out in the role:
“I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while. As usual in my book, it’s all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of [positive] reaction to, [like 'The Avengers']. If [Marve] keep[s] doing that, maybe I’ll keep showing up.”
In other words, what’re the chances that Downey Jr. gets his fill of blockbuster films – the Marvel movies and Sherlock Holmes – and decides to return to more challenging roles? We probably don’t have to worry about that for a while, of course, but the party can’t last forever.
On the casting rumors regarding Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, et cetera:
“[I can’t wait to work with] any or all of them. [...] It’s funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion. ‘Iron Man 3′ is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I’m sure I’ll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead.”
On whether or not Iron Man 3 will take place, in part, in Asia, as has been speculated:
“I’d like to tell you all my secrets, but I forget them.”
While all of the Marvel standalone films have inspired a certain amount of fan hype in my heart, Iron Man 3 is the first one I’ve been extremely excited about since, well, Iron Man. That’s due primarily to Shane Black’s involvement as co-writer/director. Of course, Black’s filmic follow-up to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang could have had nothing whatsoever to do with the Marvel universe, and I’d still be extremely excited.

Yea, if there were to be more iron man movies in the future… No one would ever be as good as RDJ!!

Honestly, no, I don’t think anyone else could play Iron Man better than Robert does! There is just something about him that makes the role amazing. He’s not only good-looking but he has that type of humor that has you wanting more. I couldn’t bare to see anyone else in this role! He’s perfect for the job!

Also, it honestly doesn’t matter if this article is over 9 months old. RDJ is still Tony Stark/Iron Man.
I don’t see them replacing him anytime soon, if anything… they’ll kill him off in one of the AVENGERS films. But, that is also a somewhat of a stretch.
IF they honestly replace RDJ as Tony Stark in TA2, I won’t be coming to the theater to watch it.

No way!! I feel only Robert Downey Jr can play this role! He has brought Ironman to life for me, and given Tony Stark personality! He is such a great actor, and don’t think anyone can fill his shoes for this role. I will not go see this move, unless Robert Downey Jr is Ironman. Never saw the new Spiderman because it was not Toby, plus they changed the story line.
If RDJ doesn’t want to play Tony Stark much longer, I will say that he should at least show up in the Avengers 2. But I agree, RDJ is the only man for the job. If he won’t do any more Iron Man movies (except maybe the Avengers), then please don’t do any more after Iron Man 3. I hate it when they change the actors.
RDJ is 47 years old and he is getting old, he knows, everyone knows. It’s easy for us to say that RDJ has to play Iron Man in all Marvel movies but let’s face the facts. I don’t think people or me or RDJ for that matter would want to see a 90 year old Tony Stark/Iron Man flying around and kicking asses. RDJ knows when to stop playing Iron Man.
For now,
RDJ is Iron Man, Iron Man is RDJ. Period

I do agree with RDJ on the retirement issue. My opinion is that, it’s best to resign when u r at its peak. it’s like knowing when to let go and not be too greedy although ironman ll nvr b the same again without him. I do hope that the next person they cast ll b as talented as him and as attractive.
Robert Downey jr is an excellent actor and in my opinion the only man who can play the role of Tony stark/iron man. It would be a shame to replace him because no one else could do the role justice. Iron man 3 was a good movie but what they did with the manderin was horrible they should have done the 10 rings story line. If they try to replace robert Downey jr I for one will not watch it.
