Robert Downey Jr. Is Set To Defy Gravity

At first it looked like Alfonso Cuaron’s science fiction film Gravity was going to star Angelina Jolie, but those rumors were soon quashed after the actress parted ways with the project. Now it seems that Iron Man himself – Robert Downey Jr is set to star in the 3D film, as the actor is now said to be in negotiations to headline.

According to Deadline:

“Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.”

Gravity was originally set up at Universal, but the studio lost interest in the film around the same time as Angelina Jolie. Now Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will co-finance the movie which would re-team the water tower studio with their Sherlock Holmes star. Apparently one of the main factors that drew Downey Jr to the film was that he wanted to work with Cuaron, who co-wrote the script with his son.

It’ll be interesting to see if there are any changes to the script – in its original incarnation the film was said to have a great deal of focus on the “female colleague” and her struggle to get back to earth and her daughter. Will this focus now be dropped because Jolie isn’t in the frame, or will the film remain a two-hander with the female star getting as much screen-time and characterization as Downey Jr.?

Time will tell.

Gravity is set to shoot this summer in London, after which Downey Jr will slip back into his tweeds to join Guy Ritchie and Jude Law for Sherlock Holmes 2 – which will also shoot in the city.

  1. Good, she's not all that great anyway

  2. I love sci-fi and RDJ usually puts up a strong performance. and something in space as well? surely i will see this.

  3. who jolie? I agree. I prefer it without her actually.

  4. Keep the script intact and adjust it to focus on the male lead and his son. easy switch.

  5. yes, Ill admit she had her moment back in the late 90s, but shes not really that good an actress or really as hot as people try to pretend she is

  6. She's a better actress then she is pretty but I don't care either way if she's in it or not. I think Mr. and Mrs. Smith left a bad taste in my mouth and maybe a couple others that I can't think of right now.

  7. According o Nikki Finke,
That Mother/Daugter storyline is still there.
I guess it depends on who they cast.
If it s a strong female presence ,probably wont be that many changes.

  8. My interest in this project has now increased with Jolie being out. RDJ would have overpowered her presence-wise anyway.

  9. She was smoking hot in Tomb Raider. Then she dropped all the muscle and I got sad.

  10. Cuaron directing is enough of a selling point. The man's the next Kubrick.

  11. RDJ in a sci-fi film would certainly be intriguing, but … my eyes are already twitching in rebellion over the thought of yet another 3D film.

  12. Why not have it just changed to a father and his daughter?

  13. Exactly. They can make the change easily to something like that.
