Two things that are for certain about Rob Zombie is that he knows heavy metal, and that he knows horror movies (try not to cringe too hard when thinking back on his version of Halloween 2 - in case you need a refresher, read our review here). But does Rob Zombie know hockey?
Some of the words affiliated with hockey (professional or street) are ‘hard hits’, ‘missing teeth’, ‘fighting’, and ‘blood’ – lots and lots of ‘blood’. Right up Rob Zombie’s alley, eh? One would assume so.
Deadline is reporting that Zombie is set to write, produce and direct Broad Street Bullies, a film about the Philadelphia Flyers team that intimidated and strong-armed their way to the top of the National Hockey League during the 1970s with their violent style of play – earning them the nicknames ‘The Broad Street Bullies’.
Zombie is already touting Broad Street Bullies as Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice (done laughing?) – how you interpret that is totally up to you. As for what interests him about this story:
Each character involved is more outrageous than the next… The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale.

Zombie’s directing preference seems to be in the horror genre as he’s directed such films as The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween. News recently broke that he would not be returning to the Halloween franchise, and that Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes had purchased the series. He is currently working on The Lords of Salem, a horror movie based on one of the musician’s more popular songs.
Mr. Zombie notoriously casts his wife Sheri Moon Zombie in his film – so don’t be too surprised if Mr. Zombie finds a role for Mrs. Zombie in Broad Street Bullies as well.
One of the old hockey jokes comes from a player who was once famously quoted as saying, ”Hockey players wear numbers because you can’t always identify the body with dental records.” Sports and violence – quite the concept. We know Zombie has the violence aspect down, but does he have sports drama in his repertoire? Guess we’ll see.
Broad Street Bullies is still in the very early stages of development, check back for future news.

As a huge Flyers fan, I love the idea of a Bullies movie….just not sure Rob Zombie is the best choice, it’ll be interesting for sure.
It will be cool to see what exactly they focus on, from that description I guess it will be their first Stanley cup, but you could get a sequel out Of the next year when they one again or better yet the 75-76 season where they failed to repeat again (got swept in the finals) but during the season brutally destroyed the Soviets in an exhibition game…Which at the time was a big deal.
this team could make a great movie…i hope it works out!
I don’t know a lot about hockey, but if Rob Zombie is directing a movie based on true life story about a pro hockey team, then these guys must’ve been bad news.
In response to Brandon, the Flyers of the ’70′s (and all of them, really) are worse than Nazis.
@Josh – “…worse than Nazis”? Really? A bit extreme, don’t you think?
most likely a butt-hurt bruins fan
I should preface bye saying that I’m a Rob Zombie fan. His music, his live shows (check em out on YouTube) and his films.
Well that isn’t exactly true. While I like his films visually and for their direction I absolutely can’t stand his dialog. It’s cringe worthy most of the time. That’s why I’ve said for a while that I wish he’d do a film written bye someone else.
So while I’ll be sure to watch this at some point I doubt it will be much better than the rest of his stuff.
