‘Road House’ Remake Being Directed by ‘Fast and the Furious’ Helmer

Fans of beloved films of the past have become increasingly forced to accept the fact that – in the age of remakes and franchise reboots – nothing is sacred. It’s true that some characters (James Bond, Batman, etc.) are bound to live on forever in an endless cycle of reimaginings as new filmmakers bring their own vision to life, and some films feel so old-fashioned that an attempt to modernize and bring the story to a new generation makes sense (i.e. the recent Carrie remake).

Yet, in other cases, a film’s appeal is based on the fact that it encapsulates the time of its release so perfectly that it becomes beloved largely because of its nostalgic properties. This particular group of films is far trickier to resurrect for today’s viewers, but in the case of one 1980s favorite, we’re going to see a remake anyway.

According to The Wrap, Rob Cohen – whose previous credits include the original The Fast and the Furious and xXx – will direct MGM’s upcoming remake of Road House, the 1989 action film that starred Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch and Sam Elliott. Michael Stokes will write the script for the new film.

The original Road House centered on a bouncer named James Dalton (Swayze) who is hired to lead security at a violent bar in Missouri. Its initial release was met with mixed reviews and modest success at the box office, but the film has since developed cult status. It’s unknown at this early stage what changes the remake will make to the original premise.

However, it’s hard to argue that – if the Road House remake hopes to emulate the over-the-top fun of the original – Cohen is a solid choice. After all, it is this very same tone that has helped the Fast and Furious franchise thrive, and while Cohen hasn’t touched the series since the first film, he did help to set its tone and style, which director Justin Lin honed and refreshed in subsequent entries. He’s also rebounding from the critical and financial failure of last year’s Alex Cross and could use a return to the world of action films.

Road House is also far from the only new take on a project that once starred Swayze. Remakes of Dirty Dancing (and opposed to the 2004 pseudo-sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights) and Point Break are reportedly still in the works, as is a television series based on the Oscar-winning film Ghost. Still, the prospect of a Road House remake faces a similar challenge as last year’s Red Dawn (also, incidentally, a remake of a film starring Swayze).

Both Road House and Red Dawn are so indicative of the era in which they were conceived that they risk feeling out of place in 2013. Audiences may enjoy taking a nostalgic trip back to the testosterone-driven action films of the 1980s (as the success of The Expendables testifies), but a Road House remake risks feeling dated (as was the case with the Red Dawn remake) and a baseless attempt to cash in on a film that many fans still hold dear. Without the right approach, Road House may fail to connect with new viewers and alienate longtime fans, ending up on the wrong side of the thin line between an awesomely bad movie and just a bad movie altogether. Here’s hoping Cohen can steer clear of the latter.

Do you think a Road House remake can work, and is Cohen the right man for the job? Sound off in the comments section below.

  1. If there has to be a re-make the only actor to play Dalton would be Christian Kane. He would be PERFECT.

  2. I believe that if there is going to be a remake of the movie, there is an actor the part was made for. His name is Christian Kane and most recently starred as Eliot Spencer in the TV show Leverage! He’s also in a Jim Wilson written, directed, and produced movie named 50 to 1 a true story about the ’09 Kentucky Derby Winner Mine That Bird which is being released in March! The movie trailer is on iTunes so you can view it. I suggest that anyone not familiar with his work, please go check him out on YouTube, as there are copious amounts of fan generated videos.

  3. Christian Kane is the only one I see doing the role of Dalton just e. He’s a natural, plays all type of roles and makes them believable. Easy on the eyes Wooo!

  4. Roadhouse is one of my all time favorite movies. I Hope that Christian Kane gets the part as Dalton he will not disappoint check him out! You will see. #christiankane

  5. Christian Kane would be great as Dalton!

  6. Christian Kane is the man for the job. He is perfect to play Dalton. He has all the talent in the world. Choosing him to play Dalton is a must!

  7. Christian Kane would make a very great Dalton he has the look and ability to play the part with great passion please give him a chance to prove he can do great justice to this wonderful movie

  8. Dalton would best be played by Christian Kane. Hands down the man has the ability to just own this role. I have no doubts on this. he is an absolutely amazing actor. Check him out in Leverage.

  9. Please Please seriously consider Christian Kane for the role of Dalton! He would put all his heart and soul into this role, like he does with everything else. He would also do it to honor Patrick Swayze! Not to mention he is very easy on the eyes, does all his own stunts and is a very talented actor!

  10. The only actor who would be able to do justice to the role of Dalton is Christian Kane. He is the perfect person to play this role and do a proper dedication to Patrick Swayze.

  11. The only actor that I think could do the part of Dalton justice is Christian Kane! This part was made for him and to cast any other actor would be crazy!!

  12. I’d love to see Christian Kane in a remake of Roadhouse!

  13. One more supporting Christian Kane for the lead. He is the perfect choice for Dakton in this remake. His work in Leverage playing “the muscle” shows he can fight and he’s got the right amount of cool, sexy, slightly southern charm. I don’t typically lobby for casting unless it really believe the person I’m lobbying for is right for the job. Yes, I’m a fan if Christian’s and would see anything he does and as a fan, I do what I can to support him. But, this is one role I really think is made for him . Thank you for your consideration.

  14. I love Christian Kane, think he’s incredibly talented & very much want to see him on screen way more than I do now. That being said, I can’t for the life of me see why anyone would want to make a remake of Roadhouse, however, he would make a great Dalton, so if you’re making it anyway, it would be a very thing good to consider him. Would also like to add that fans of Christian know that he doesn’t post often but when he does, he speaks his mind. There is no way he would feel compelled to post anything in response to his fans. The man is not ‘chatty’, to say the least. :-)

  15. Christian Kane would be perfectfortherole of Dalton!! He is a great actor with wonderful screen presence! He would also be able to carry the fight aspect of the movie flawlessly! Christian was not only a main castmemberfir 5 years on Leverage portraying the teams “hitter” he was. the shows fight coordinator. I would be fist in line to see Christian Kane as Dalton!!

  16. Christian Kane should play Dalton in the remake of RoadHouse and I believe he has the ability to play it.
I think the “Original”-Dalton Patrick Swayze would think so too

  17. I, for one, don’t really see anyone cast in the role of Dalton except Christian Kane. He choreographed his stunts on Leverage, has a cool and calm demeanor unless he is helping someone or kicking some serious booty!!!! He showed his fighting skills in “Universal Squadron” as well as Leverage. And, if I may point out, he is just as “pretty” as Patrick Swayze and does amazing romantic scenes. If you must remake this already fabulous movie, please cast CHRISTIAN KANE.

  18. Wonderful movie. Love it!! Patrick Swayze is the only Dalton , I would’ve thought-EVER!! But, I ABSOLUTELY agree– Christian Kane “is” Dalton, for sure, too!! PERFECT!!!

  19. I will throw my hat into the ring here as well. IF (and I wish they wouldn’t) if they are going to do a remake I think that Christian Kane is the best choice for the role. Before anyone asks YES I am Kaniac, but I am a film buff first and for most. Christian has the looks, the charisma and the talent to pull off the role. He does his own stunts, so the camera can stay on him for the longer fight scenes. I am a fan of the original and would love to see it left alone, that said, Christian would make the best Dalton. In his own words..’Ten bucks says I can kick the ass of whoever they cast as Dalton’.

  20. Christian Kane is the only person to cast in the role of Dalton. Y\Thanks for ;etting me express my opinion on the subject.

  21. Christian Kane would be awesome as Dalton, really he’s the only one I can see playing that role other then Patrick Swayze! No one else could fill those cowboy boots but Christian. :)

  22. If it’s gonna happen, it’s gotta be with Christian Kane!

  23. Please seriously consider Christain Kane for the roll of Dalton in the remake of Roadhouse. He has the talent to do the roll justce. He does amazing fight scenes, does his own stunts, & sings. There is no better choice.

  24. I’m thinking Christian Kane would be a be a better Dalton then anyone! Including Patrick Swazie

  25. Christian Kane would be absolutely perfect for the role of Dalton!

  26. Yes, Christian Kane would be perfect in this role!

  27. I loved the original “Roadhouse” and of course Patrick Swayze could NEVER be replaced, but MGM is going to remake “Roadhouse” anyway they need to do it right and cast Christian Kane in the role of Dalton. In Christian’s role as ‘Eliot Spence’ on TNTs Award winning show “Leverage” Christian proved himself to an extremely versatile actor. Christian can play the roles of fighter and nice guy with equal ease very convincingly. A modernized version of “Roadhouse” needs a modernized Bouncer and that would be Christian Kane!
