The first teaser for Riverdale season 2 is here, and it's all-action as Fred Andrews fights for his life. Riverdale season one ended on a huge cliffhanger as Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) was shot during an armed robbery at Pop's diner. Witnessed by his son, Archie (K.J. Apa), Fred's shooting concluded a dramatic first season for the show, which is based on the characters from Archie Comics.

This new promo confirms that Riverdale season 2 picks up immediately after the shooting, with Archie desperately dragging his dad into the hospital for medical attention. At that moment, Fred is still alive, but it's not yet confirmed whether he lives or dies. We do know, however, that Archie's mom (Molly Ringwald) will return to Riverdale, and that the shooting leaves Archie dealing with some major issues throughout the course of season 2.

The fate of Fred Andrews is a mystery all of its own (one that the above video, which includes both season 1 bloopers and season 2 footage, does not answer), but so too is who shot him, and why. Certainly Archie is of the same opinion that most fans are, following on from Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) finale voiceover - the shooting of Fred was premeditated, most likely a hitman hired by someone... but who?

Hiram Lodge certainly has an axe to grind with Fred; after all, Fred did get involved with Hiram's wife, Hermione, while he was in prison. Then there's the Southside Serpents; although FP Jones and Fred go back a long way, the Serpents might not like Fred's involvement with one of their most prominent members, or his eagerness to keep Jughead away from the gang. Possibly the Blossom family are also seeking revenge; they were involved in shady business dealings with Hiram, and Fred refused to bow to the pressure from the Lodge family or the Blossoms. Then again, maybe Fred (or Archie) has an enemy elsewhere that we know nothing about?

A much darker path has been teased for Riverdale season 2; even more so than Clifford Blossom killing his own son, apparently. That's certainly on display in the teaser above; Betty, Veronica, Archie and Jughead have a new case to crack in who shot Fred, but elsewhere, Cheryl Blossom continues to unravel. After setting fire to Thornhill, Cheryl's actions have obviously landed her mother in a serious condition. In a chilling turn worthy of something we would see in Misery, Cheryl coos over her mother, promising to make everything better. The trouble is, her version of 'better' seems truly terrifying, and not very beneficial for Penelope Blossom's health.
