The CW releases a new trailer for Riverdale season 2 as Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and his friends dive deeper into the dark side of their hometown. In recent years, the network has bolstered its lineup of television series adapted from comics, including its four - soon to be five - shows based on DC Comics characters and iZombie, adapted from the Vertigo title of the same name. Plus, of course, Riverdale, the loose adaptation of Archie Comics' most iconic characters. Season 1 of Riverdale largely focused on the murder of Jason Blossom, which Archie investigated with his friends Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes).

While the penultimate episode of season 1 solved that particular mystery, the Riverdale season 1 finale set up a whole new mystery, one involving a holdup at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe and the potential attempted murder of Archie's father, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry). The cast and creative team behind Riverdale have promised a much darker and scarier season 2, and the latest trailer for the show's return teases that exact tone.

The CW unveiled a new teaser for Riverdale season 2 [above] ahead of the show's return next month. The trailer features quite a few interesting glimpses of what fans can expect from Riverdale's sophomore outing, including a shot of Archie, Betty, Jughead, and Veronica dressed again like their classic comic counterparts.

Veronica's father, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), can be seen in the trailer, and Veronica herself is shown at one point in a wedding dress - in what appears to be an Archie dream sequence of sorts, since his mother, Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald), also seemingly shows up in that scene. And, in another scene, Archie can be seen with a gun talking to Dilton Doily outside Pop's. Other brief shots spotlight Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) in a hospital, Jughead looking at his Southside Serpents jacket, Betty kissing Jughead, and a bloody car seat.

These images and scenes don't necessarily make sense just yet, since we don't know much about Riverdale season 2 aside from the vague teases from the cast and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Based on casting news, we know Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) will appear this season, along with Veronica's ex-boyfriend Nick St. Clair (Graham Phillips). Still, it's unclear how exactly these characters will fit into the narrative in season 2, but with Riverdale returning for a full 22-episode season - compared to the show's 13-episode first season - the series will have plenty of time to explore the dark underbelly of Archie's hometown.
