[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Riverdale ahead.]

-

Skeet Ulrich has been promoted to series regular on Riverdale. After a season long murder mystery, Riverdale has offered closure to its audience with a few straight-forward answers. Jason Blossom was kidnapped and murdered by his own father - Clifford Blossom - to keep the family secret about their fortune coming from drugs and not syrup. However, the season 1 finale offered a number of new cliffhangers to take the murder mystery's place in season two. The big one is the mystery of who shot Fred Andrews and whether he will survive, but every family in the town of Riverdale is dealing with its own uncertain future. That includes the Jones men - Jughead and his father FP.

At the end of the first season of Riverdale, FP was in jail. While he was initially framed for Jason's murder and confessed in order to protect Jughead, FP remained incarcerated for his role in covering the murder up, even after the truth about Clifford Blossom was revealed. This has left Jughead - whose mother won't take him in for unknown reasons - a ward of the state and also offered a place in the Southside Serpents - just like his father.

However, we can now safely say that Jughead won't be saying goodbye to his father, anytime soon. According to Deadline, Skeet Ulrich has been promoted to series regular for Riverdale season 2 - meaning that there is plenty more of FP's story to be told on the show.

Skeet Ulrich as FP Jones in Riverdale

It is not known at this time whether this promotion for the actor who plays him means FP is getting out of jail anytime soon. He may continue the entire season behind bars, with most of his scenes involving Jughead or other characters coming to visit him. Or maybe he will be getting out sooner than expected, perhaps with the help of another character who knows a thing or two about prison - Hiram Lodge. The two men know each other from High School, and Lodge has hired the Serpents to do his dirty work in the past. So maybe he feels like he owes FP a favor, or maybe he will help him in order to get back on his daughter Veronica's good side.

While the parents in Riverdale are all core characters in the show and the lives of their children, there does seem to be an extra focus on fathers. Both Archie and Jughead have dealt with their mothers leaving and them staying behind with their dads. Kevin Keller also seems to be mostly parented by just his father. Josie and Veronica have had the opposite experiences - dealing with absent fathers - while Cheryl's father killed her own brother. And while the Cooper family seems to be ruled by the women, Hal Cooper's secrets nearly took his family apart.

With all these stories about the various fathers in Riverdale, it certainly makes sense to make Ulrich a series regular and explore his character further. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how he feels about his son following in his footsteps with the Serpents.
