[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Riverdale ahead.]

-

Riverdale hasn't delved fully into the supernatural yet, but that will change - should Sabrina the Teenage Witch join the party. The series' freshman season has come to and end over on The CW, leaving us all with a massive cliffhanger, and setting up season 2 nicely. Based on the characters from Archie Comics, Riverdale centers on Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, and Veronica Lodge, and the dark, murky town they live in.

There's plenty of goings on in Riverdale that could rival Twin Peaks - its biggest influence - in the weirdness stakes. Incest, drugs trafficking, and a father killing a son are just a few of the plotlines season one has delivered, but one area left unexplored, is the supernatural. In Archie Comics, Sabrina the Teenage Witch is a character who lives across the water in a neighboring town called Greendale. She has powers, the likes of which we've seen fully on display in the spinoff comic book series, Afterlife with Archie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa not only writes Afterlife and Chilling Adventures, but he's also the showrunnner of Riverdale, and there's been talk for a long time that he could introduce Sabrina in a supernatural twist to the show. However, that didn't happen in season 1. Speaking to Comic Book, Scasa explained that Sabrina didn't make an appearance simply because the show was already packed with storylines in its first season - though the future is another matter.

Here is what Aguirre-Sacasa has to say, regarding a possible future for Sabrina on Riverdale:

“There’s no secret that I love that character, and that that character is a huge part of the Archie universe. The truth is, we did talk a lot about introducing Sabrina, but she’s such an important character and it’s such a big idea to introduce the supernatural into a natural world that honestly when we got to the finale — it was before that, it was maybe a couple of months before that — we kind of realized that there was so much stuff to play that if we introduced Sabrina, it would kind of overshadow everything that we had planned.

The show kind of has hints of the supernatural throughout it; there are visions of Jason as a ghost, as a zombie. Archie sees werewolves. There’s a lot of talk about angry, pagan gods and there’s a voodoo doll. We are going to continue exploring the idea of the supernatural being on the fringes of Riverdale, and that might be to lead up to Sabrina’s arrival or that might just be to make it more like Twin Peaks and the way they dealt with the supernatural.”

Once again citing Twin Peaks as inspiration, Sacasa refers to the fact that although the show delved into the supernatural, it was through vivid dream sequences, or events that were simply unexplained, rather than it being overtly a supernatural show. Still, that doesn't rule out Sabrina joining the show; maybe with lesser powers than we see in the comics, but still with a touch of 'something.'

As for who could play her, Disney Channel star Dove Cameron has placed her hat firmly in the ring, posting the above tweet and retweeting many others, and we can only hope Sacasa is listening. Not only would Cameron be a brilliant fit for the role, but the character continues to enjoy huge populalrity thanks to the '90s TV show starring Melissa Joan Heart as Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Many fans of Riverdale would love to see Sabrina introduced, and for Riverdale to take a turn into inexplicable.
