Riverdale producer Greg Berlanti teases an “incredible” second season for the thrilling teen drama when the series returns on The CW. Loosely based off the Archie Comics, Riverdale became one of primetime TV’s biggest critical hits last year introducing us to the small - and very dark - town of Riverdale and its residents Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and, of course, Josie and the Pussycats as they were pulled into the mystery of Jason Blossom’s murder.

While last season’s penultimate episode solved the mystery, the season finale left fans on the edge of their seats with Jughead being lured away from his love, Betty, by the serpents, Cheryl burning her family home to the ground and Archie’s father’s life hanging in the balance after being shot by a masked robber at Pop’s. We already know from the latest Riverdale season 2 trailer that the next season is going to be even darker, more intense and more captivating, and now we have some confirmation that it’s going to include some of the best episodes yet with a killer new mystery.

In a new interview with EW as part of their Fall TV Preview, one of Riverdale’s producers, Greg Berlanti, discusses the new season’s strong first three episodes and teases an incredible new mystery ready to rock Riverdale:

“The first three episodes of this are the strongest of a second season I’ve been a part of. It’s got an incredible new mystery and a new hook, and I think it’s got more of everything that people love about the show.”

Considering Berlanti had previously produced for series like Dawson’s Creek and Brothers & Sisters, it’s exciting to hear that Riverdale’s first three episodes of season 2 are the strongest of a second season he has ever been a part of. We know so far that the first three episodes will be titled ‘A Kiss Before Dying’, ‘Nighthawks’ and ‘The Watcher in the Woods’. These are all ominously dark titles that will likely follow the fallout of season 1’s finale setting up the new mystery, which could very well be centered around the shooting of Fred Andrews (Luke Perry).

While we don’t have much information surrounding this new mystery, we do know that Betty will be the focal point as she becomes entangled in something that causes her to break. We know from the first season that Betty isn’t the innocent girl she outwardly seems to be - like everyone, she has a dark side that came out when she donned a black wig and lingerie during her and Veronica’s “full dark, no stars” hot-tub and maple syrup-coated revenge on Chuck Clayton after he humiliated multiple girls at their high school. It was a turning point for Betty that revealed her hidden side and it sounds like we are going to be seeing more of "dark Betty" as she becomes entangled in the central mystery.
