The highly-anticipated second season of Riverdale will see the return of Molly Ringwald as Mary Andrews. It wouldn't be an understatement either, to say that there's, even more, mystery surrounding the central premise and storyline of Riverdale's second season than there was with its predecessor. And that's saying something, considering the entire season was all about the lives of Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and his friends - including Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) - as they were thrown into turmoil by the mysterious murder of Jason Blossom, Riverdale's designated popular boy.

While the show's season finale finally revealed the motivations and identity of Jason Blossom's killer too, Riverdale did it while simultaneously raising a dozen new questions about the titular town at the heart of the show, and what might be lurking behind each and every alleyway corner. It did that and also managed to throw the fate of one of the show's major beloved characters into question in its final few, shocking minutes.

Filming on Riverdale's second season officially began last week too, and with it comes some new confirmations and intriguing behind-the-scenes photos. Today's most exciting bit of news, though, comes with the confirmation that Molly Ringwald will indeed be reprising her role as Archie's mom, Mary, in the new season after playing a small role in the show's freshman run. Check out the confirmation photo for yourself down below, which was posted by the official Archie Comics Twitter account:

Like many of the other tidbits of information and photos that have been released from the new season, the confirmation of Ringwald's return brings a fair amount of questions with it. Most notably, what her return may or may not mean for the fate of Luke Perry's Fred Andrews, who was last seen shot and bleeding out in the final moments of the show's season finale. And in case that wasn't enough, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's comments that Archie will carry himself like Bruce Wayne in the new season certainly haven't bode well for Fred's overall fate.

At the same time, everyone involved in the series has done a good job at keeping the mystery of Fred's fate in question up until this point. With no behind-the-scenes photos even hinting at if Perry has a role in the new season, whether or not Archie's father is still alive will no doubt be one of the biggest questions fans will want answered when Riverdale returns next season. How Ringwald's Mary reacts to the news of her soon-to-be-ex-husband's shooting will, no doubt, be an interesting aspect of the new season as well.

Riverdale returns on Wednesday, October 11 on The CW.
