Veronica's past will catch up with her when her ex-boyfriend joins the party in Riverdale season 2. Despite the eponymous town's tendency to be a hub for murder and mystery, there is always room for love in Riverdale; just look at the Betty and Jughead relationship that developed last season amongst the chaos. However, according to a new report, another fan-favorite couple - Archie and Veronica - are going to be facing some new complications, in the form of Veronica's former flame from New York.

Known for playing Alicia Florrick’s son Zach on The Good Wife, as well as starring in Ben 10: Race Against Time, Netflix's XOXOWhite Collar and Secrets and Lies, actor Graham Phillips has been cast to play Veronica's ex-boyfriend, Nick St. Clair, on The CW's teen drama. Season 2 of Riverdale will begin airing on the network later this year, in October.

In a report from EWRiverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa talks about how Phillips' wild card character is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and will threaten Archie and Veronica's relationship, saying:

“Nick is an old classmate of Veronica’s from New York, and despite his parent-pleasing veneer, he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing: a hard-partying Lothario with dark desires and an unchecked sense of privilege. His arrival in Riverdale will threaten Archie’s relationship with Veronica, and may even put some of our characters at risk.”

Archie had some pretty bad luck with women in Riverdale season 1 - just look at what happened with his not-so-legal summer fling with Miss. Geraldine Grundy, his complete ignorance when it came to dating Valerie, and let's not forget how he totally broke Betty's heart back in episode one, when he didn't realized just how much she cared about him. As such, we have a feeling that his fragile relationship with Veronica may not survive anthey pressure and tension that Nick brings when he arrives in town.

We also know that this season of Riverdale will be darker and the main mystery will focus on a "broken Betty", despite last season ending on that huge cliffhanger - with Archie's father being shot by a robber at Pops. We also know from the first couple of episode titles like “A Kiss Before Dying”, “Nighthawks”, “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” and “The Watcher in the Woods”, that season 2 is going to take on a more noir/thriller feel - with life for Archie and his friends becoming even darker, as his father's own life hangs in the balance, Betty and Jughead's relationship goes downhill, and Veronica's criminal father Hiram Lodge comes home.
