Filming on Riverdale season 2 will start tomorrow. The adaptation, ushered to the small screen by showrunner and Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, put a darker spin on beloved characters like Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). Season 1 of Riverdale followed the investigation surrounding the murder of Jason Blossom, which led to the revelation of his killer in the penultimate episode. However, there's plenty more darkness to be uncovered in this small town.

The season 1 finale of Riverdale ended on quite a cliffhanger. Even though the mystery of Jason's murder had been solved, things weren't quite wrapped up neatly since Jughead's father remained in jail. Elsewhere, Veronica found out her own father, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), was getting out of prison, while Archie's father was the victim of what appeared to be a robbery gone wrong at Pop's Chocklit Shoppe. Since the finale left viewers with so many questions, Riverdale has plenty to explore in season 2, and now fans can rest assured The CW's Archie Comics series is one step closer to returning to TV this fall.

Archie Comics announced on Twitter today that season 2 of Riverdale will begin filming tomorrow, posting a photo of Sprouse in costume as Jughead chowing down on the character's favorite food: cheeseburgers. (The photo is particularly of note since Jughead wasn't shown eating a cheeseburger in Riverdale season 1 until the finale episode.) Take a look:

The annoucement of Riverdale commencing filming on season 2 arrives just a few days after Archie Comics posted a photo on Twitter of the cast's first table read for the show's sophomore outing, which includes the four central teens, Consuelos, and Kevin Keller actor Casey Cott (who was promoted to a series regular), among others. In terms of what fans can expect from next season, Aguirre-Sacasa has provided a healthy dose of teases and hints throughout the show's hiatus thus far, even revealing the Riverdale season 2 premiere title to be 'A Kiss Before Dying'. Considering where Riverdale left the story of Archie's father, Fred (Luke Perry) - and the actor doesn't appear to be in the photo of the table read - there's certainly sure to be trouble when the show returns. Additionally, Aguirre-Sacasa has promised a darker season 2, even comparing Archie to Batman alter ego Bruce Wayne. The show's darker tone will no doubt be helped by the arrival of Hiram Lodge and his shady dealings.

Still, concrete details about Riverdale season 2 likely won't arrive for some time - potentially at Comic-Con International in San Diego next month if the show has a presence, which is likely - while a trailer may not be released until much closer to the show's October premiere.
