There are few video game franchises that can rival the success of the prolific Tomb Raider. Lara Croft has been brought to life in several video games, two feature films, comic books, novels and even theme park rides; a new film reboot is even in development and currently seeking a director.
Next though, the latest entry in the Tomb Raider video game saga, Rise of the Tomb Raider, will be released on the Xbox this holiday season by publishers Microsoft, Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics. A new trailer, titled “Descent Into Legend”, offers fans a sneak peek at all new, never before seen gameplay footage from the highly anticipated third-person action-adventure sequel.
Fans has been offered brief glimpses into the actual gameplay of Rise of the Tomb Raider through video releases, the previous of which were titled “Advancing Storm” and “Prophet’s Tomb”. The latest video, “Descent Into Legend”, more firmly establishes the in-depth world that Lara Croft will be exploring to locate the Lost City of Kitezh.
Here is a plot summary for the game, that accompanied the latest trailer release:
In “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” Lara Croft embarks on her first great tomb raiding expedition to uncover an ancient mystery that places her in the cross-hairs of a ruthless organization known as Trinity. This new trailer – entitled “Descent Into Legend” – features never-before-seen gameplay footage as Lara explores vast, awe-inspiring ancient tombs filled with traps and puzzles, and battles the harsh elements and landscapes in her search for the Lost City of Kitezh.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider game reboot, features high-quality CG characters and FX, along with cut-scenes created via performance capture. The studio is touting Rise of the Tomb Raider as “the most immersive and visually stunning Tomb Raider game ever made.” That claim holds up based on the material in this new video, as we’re shown Lara Croft swimming, braving the snowy Siberian landscape, swinging and falling out of harm’s way and proving once again that she’s the toughest archeologist this side of Indiana Jones.
Rhianna Pratchett is returning to her Tomb Raider writing duties for this sequel; her 2013 reboot Tomb Raider game managed to sell more than one million copies in the first two days of release. The game plot revolves around Lara Croft and Jonah Maiava seeking out the Siberian Lost City of Kitezh, in hopes of learning the supernatural secrets behind the myths of the world. Croft will have to defend herself against not only humans, but also animals and events in the gameplay environment.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is unique, because it allows for more mobility, allowing players to utilize combat tactics, sneak attacks and stealth maneuvers. Here’s to hoping the gameplay lives up to the expectations surrounding it.
Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10th, 2015 in North America and on November 13th, 2015 in Europe. The game will later be made available for Microsoft Windows in early 2016 and subsequently on Playstation 4 in late 2016.
