A new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker poster recreates the design of a Return of the Jedi poster from the 1980s. When it comes to marketing for Disney's new Star Wars movies, nostalgia is a powerful tool. Dating back to the original Force Awakens teaser released in November 2014, the studio's promotional materials have leaned heavily on the franchise's classic iconography, finding ways to blend new and legacy elements into a poignant package. Considering the commercial success the modern Star Wars films have had (Solo notwithstanding), it's safe to say this strategy has paid off in spades.

With The Rise of Skywalker culminating the nine-movie saga, it isn't surprising it's integrated plenty of Star Wars history into marketing, tying the three trilogies together. A recent TV spot even made excellent use of the "Duel of the Fates" track from The Phantom Menace, tipping a hat to the prequels. It goes without saying the campaign's been doing plenty to conjure up original trilogy memories, most recently with a poster modeled after a classic Star Wars design from 1977. With The Rise of Skywalker's release drawing ever closer, Disney is once again putting a fresh spin on an old poster.

Today, official Star Wars social media channels posted a fresh one-sheet, which recreates the famous Revenge of the Jedi poster. Fans may recall that was the original title of Return of the Jedi, before George Lucas changed it late in development. Check out the Twitter post in the space below:

The poetry here obviously stems from the fact Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker are the last films in their respective trilogies. So, it makes sense for Disney to evoke the 1983 film, and it isn't the first time they've done so during Star Wars 9 promotion. Previous marketing materials have spotlighted Rey and Kylo Ren's lightsaber duel that takes place on Death Star II wreckage and even teased the return of Wicket W. Warrick. One would hope that The Rise of Skywalker isn't simply going to be Return of the Jedi 2.0 (and based on Abrams' comments, it probably won't be), though small nods here and there to the saga's sixth episode would be appreciated.

This poster also serves as yet another reminder The Rise of Skywalker is the definitive end of the Skywalker saga, evidenced by the text across the top reading, "The saga concludes" (instead of Revenge of the Jedi's "the saga continues"). Fans have very much been left in the dark regarding several Star Wars 9 plot points, but Disney's made sure to hammer home this is it. Star Wars will of course go on long after The Rise of Skywalker, but this particular story is over in about a week's time. And it'll be very interesting to see how director J.J. Abrams chose to finish it.
