The other day we got a look at some very brief footage from the upcoming Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the reaction to just five seconds of the movie was overwhelmingly positive.

Today, Hobbit director Peter Jackson’s effects company, WETA Workshop, is hosting a live chat event, featuring more extensive looks at the company’s work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and you can watch the whole event right here!

In this prequel film, James Franco plays Will Rodman, a cutting-edge scientist whose research into genetic engineering as a cure for Alzheimer’s disease leads to an ape named Caesar gaining advanced intelligence, which ultimately leads to humanity’s downfall and the titular rise of a simian-controlled world.

The brief clip released online gave us a fleeting look at actor Andy Serkis’ visually spectacular transformation into Caesar (see header image above). Serkis also provided the motion-capture performance for Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (another WETA project), and it seeems like the mix of cutting-edge visual technology and a strong performance from Serkis could combine to make Caesar one of the truly great CGI characters in film.

In fact, considering that Caesar is essentially a real-life animal (unlike more fantastical creatures found in films like LOTR, Avatar and King Kong), it’s fair to say that Caesar has the potential to be the first CGI movie character that fully bridges the gap between reality and artificiality, which has plagued many a Robert Zemeckis motion-capture movie (see:  The Polar Express).

Below is the portal for viewing WETA’s live chat event, which kicks off at 5:30EST/2:30PST today:

  1. 4/13,/2011
Thank You to Screen Rant for the information about the Video Interview.
It looks like it will be a fun movie.

  2. Dude, Andy Serkis is going to go down in history as the king of of motion capture actors.

    • agreed!

      • I would vote for him…

  3. WB should have definitely used Weta for Green Lantern instead of whatever Visual Effects place they settled for to save a buck. The work on apes looks far superior.

    • thats what i been saying!!, but i guess some producers didnt get the memo

  4. i wish i could go back in time and put a bit of coin on weta stocks before LOTR – gangbusters!! they’re just so good!

this was a great marketing move, i think the premise of a cgi ape was putting people off, but this looks amazing. looking forward to a trailer. i’m a bit worried about the script given the writers pedigree. i admit i liked the relic, but c’mooon…

  5. i wish they would have done a sequel to tim burton’s ’01 planet of the apes, but at least there doing another apes movie!

  6. Just watched trailer looks pretty good made me a lot more excited then i originally was for this movie

  7. this is what ive been talking about. this is how movies should be made looks awesome.

  8. now we need a remake to island of dr moreau, the creature from the black lagoon, underworld origins of corvinus, steve altens the loch, splice 2, a remake to resident evil, dino crisis, and many more great sci fi thrillers, and monster films in this dark creepy style.

  9. against humansproblem: caesar was not chemically altered in the original apes history. his parents came back in time and gave birth to him before they was shot and he was raised by ricardo montelbaun. he grew up and lead the revolt .

  10. I’m sorry I thought this was PETA complaining about how the apes in the film were being exploited for monetary gain.

    My bad.
