‘R.I.P.D.’ Trailer Looks Like ‘Men in Black’ Meets ‘Ghostbusters’

Published 1 year ago by

What happens when you die? In the first official trailer for Robert Schwentke’s R.I.P.D. - which stands for “Rest in Peace Department” - the first thirty seconds detail how the souls of the dearly departed make it to the other side, while the other 220 focus on the ghastly things Nick Cruz Walker (Ryan Reynolds) must deal with once he gets there.

If there’s no rest for the wicked, there’s no rest for the just, either, at least if Universal’s adaptation of Peter M. Lenkov’s graphic novel has anything to say about it.

The film follows Nick, a deceased police officer, as he acclimates to life after death and becomes a member of the titular spectral law enforcement group. He’s partnered with veteran R.I.P.D. officer and former cowboy Roy Powell (Jeff Bridges); together, they’re pitted against a seemingly endless parade of phantasmal foes, dispensing their brand of posthumous law and order as they see fit while Nick, a fish out of water, struggles to figure out who murdered him.

On paper, it sounds like fun, and the brief, quick-cut trailer seems to support that notion. R.I.P.D. has been in the works for the last two years, ever since Schwentke first took the directing gig in 2011, so the sight of a trailer may actually serve to remind some people of the project’s existence.

At the same time, it’s likely to strike some people as a cross-genre cocktail combining elements from Men In BlackTrue Grit, and Ghostbusters, and that’s probably fair. Bridges looks like he’s in full Rooster Cogburn mode here, while the playful, creepy, and varied monster designs – and the high-tech weaponry – recall the exploits of Agents K and J as well as Peter, Ray, Winston, and Egon.

But there’s a lot of other common ancestry here, too, both on the page and on the screen. Inspiration from titles like Constantine and Hellboy - as well as Hellboy‘s comic book spin-off, B.P.R.D. - echoes in the action displayed here, while the clash between the wild West and modern, sci-fi elements recall a little bit of Cowboys & Aliens. In other words, R.I.P.D. looks like it contains a veritable smorgasbord of influences, and the results look like they’ve got potential.

Schwentke isn’t new to making comic book movies – he made RED back in 2010, a film that did surprisingly good business and earned some strong critical praise as well. (That film’s sequel, RED 2, comes out at the end of the summer.) R.I.P.D. will reunite him with Mary-Louise Parker, his leading lady for RED, and Reynolds rounds out the casting with his Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine experience.

At a glance, it looks like the performance to savor here will be Bridge’s; he’s going ham, and if Schwentke and the rest of the cast understand the sort of movie they’re making as well as Bridges appears to, R.I.P.D. could be an awesome ride (though we’ll have to wait until July to know for sure).

In tandem with the release of the trailer, Universal has also unveiled the film’s official poster – sleek, cool, and to the point, though admittedly lacking in the wacky supernatural elements that give the teaser its appeal. You can check out the one-sheet below:

  1. Jeff Bridges is an amazing actor and one of my favorites but talk about phoning this one in. He is virtually playing Rooster Cogburn again. Pretty lazy.

  2. Welp. We’ll see if Jeff can save this movie from hell.

    • No, I cant.

  3. Ummm… WTF???
I have no idea what to make of what I just watched??
I can obviously understand the M.I.B. comparisons and I’d even go as far as to say this may have a chance to be interesting but…
There’s a few red flags the most glaring IMO is that this was obviously a pretty expensive production, staring 2 A-List actors and until today we’ve never heard or seen a word about it other than the announcement some 2 years ago. Also, with the July release it seems like a bad sign that were only now seeing a trailer.
So if I were to put on my psychic cap I’d say this will probably be another bomb for Mr. Reynolds.

  4. Wasnt there a show like this on WB Network or UPN?

    Special Unit 2?

    • Reaper? Then there was also a similar concept way back with Brimstone.

    • Special Unit 2. Ah I miss that show. It was UPN back in the day.

      • So this is a mix of Ghostbusters, Men In Black, Dead Like Me, Brimstone, Hellboy, Constantine, and Reaper. Let’s see if Ryan does his usual schtick and it has a hint of Van Wilder too…..

  5. This movie looks like MIN to a point where it doesn’t give me a reason to bother watch it. I might download it, but I wouldn’t spend money on it.

  6. Looks like another bad cowboys and aliens film. See what I did just there.

  7. Deadpool meets the Dude…Nuff said.

  8. I am absolute looking forward to this movie. I plan on doing a Top 5 movies that I am looking forward to that come out in the June-July era. I say this looks better than The Wolverine and it looks like an absolute great ride.

  9. Looks hilarious! I put it right up there with 5th Element for ‘No-Brainer’ entertainment. Can’t wait!
    ..and Marissa? OUCH!!!!

  10. This…. uh…. compilation is raunchier than a skunk!

  11. Looks like it’ll be a nice popcorn flick, looking forward to it!

  12. I couldn’t make it through the whole trailer.. looks like Reynolds made another gem. I only hope Bridges can make it bearable.

On a side note- I will be very upset if this movie beats out Refn’s Only God Forgives, which really does look fantastic.

  13. Is it just me, or is best movie Ryan Reynolds has made in recent years been his appearance in Ted?

    • I would say, The Nines is his best but still falls short of excellence.

    • Actually, I thought he was great in “Buried”.

  14. People…MIB sucked, yes, but this movie is nothing more than a rip off of a great television show called “Brimstone,” starring John Glover as Lucifer and Peter Horton as…wait for it…the former cop killed in the line of duty who is sent back to capture 113 of the worst souls ever which had escaped from Hell.

So, instead of trying to make a great movie from a great show [cancelled because the religious lost their minds over Lucifer being 'cool' on a television show...really, I'm not kidding], they give us another ripped off gimic: guy comes back to Earth from heaven and doesn’t look like he did.

So they’re making a lame ripoff movie, which those who like those horrible MIB movies will flock to see…which will mean sequels. I weep for moviedom…which has been replaced with moviedumb.

  15. The film/comic R.I.P.D reminds me of the book “SpiritZoo” there is word of a lawsuit.

  16. The film/comic R.I.P.D reminds me of the book “SpiritZoo” there is word of a lawsuit.

SpiritZoo: Heaven, Branding, catching bad guys, A plot to destroy heaven. (Heaven Bureau of Investigation) HBI

R.I.P.D: Heaven, Branding, catching bad guys, A plot to destroy earth. (Rest In Peace Department) R.I.P.D

  17. This is a Men in Black rip off. R.I.P.D. stands for rest in peace disaster because it will flop at the box office. I am constantly hoping for new movies with original type screenplays not another version of a movie with a small tweak to try to distract from the original idea. C’mon Hollywood I thought you were better than that.
