Animated films are more popular than they have ever been and just one of the many animated features soon to hit our screens is Rio, the latest from Blue Sky Studios, which brought us the hugely successful Ice Age franchise (amongst others).
A few weeks ago we got a look at the colorful world of Rio via five exotic posters, each highlighting the various different characters that populate the film. Now we have a sneak peek at the first two minutes of the film.
Before we get to the video, here is the official synopsis for Rio:
“Blu is a rare species of blue macaw resident at a bookstore in Minnesota, who is the last of his kind. When scientists learn that another macaw was spotted in South America, and that the macaw, Jewel, is female, they take him out of Minnesota and send him to Rio de Janeiro to meet her. While there, he learns to confront his fear of flying in order to win her heart. Along the way, they get kidnapped by Fernando to sell them to get a fortune. After they escape, they try to avoid the thieves with help from Rafael, a wise Toucan, Luiz, a chainsaw ”professional” bulldog, Linda, Blu’s owner, a redhead bird and a small yellow canary, and also avoid the thieves’ pet cockatoo, Nigel.”
Okay so Rio might not be trying to reinvent the animation wheel, but as you’ll see from the following clip that probably won’t matter. The emphasis is clearly on the vibrant visuals and sense of fun. Take a look at the first two minutes of the movie below which show off an energetic song and dance number:
Rio has to be among the most bright and colorful animated films of recent memory and I imagine those visuals will be reason enough to see the movie. Having said that, with the movie being in 3D (of course it is…) there’s a chance that it might cause more than a few headaches – 3D is often taxing enough on the eyes without adding this level of colorful animated visuals, not to mention sweeping and dizzying aerial sequences.
We’ll obviously have to wait and see on that front (no pun intended) but for now Rio looks like a lot of fun in my opinion.
Rio sports an impressive voice cast which includes Jessie Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, Jamie Foxx and Will.i.am. It’s directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age trilogy) and written by Don Rhymer (Surf’s Up).
For you gaming fans out there, you should be aware of an Angry Birds/Rio tie-in game that’s been developed for the release of the movie. Read about the tie-in game over at our sister site Game Rant.
Rio flies into 3D and regular theaters on April 15th, 2011.
