The next project from director Ridley Scott is The Counselor, which marries his poetic mise-en-scène with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s (No Country for Old Men) masculine prose. However, once the post-production process has been complete on that prestigious crime-thriller, Scott is turning his attention to new installments in the Alien franchise (with a sequel to the sorta-prequel Prometheus) and Blade Runner series.

Momentum is on the Prometheus sequel’s side, thanks to the combination of this week’s Blu-ray release and ongoing debates about the sci-fi film’s qualities (which have been re-invigorated by new details about earlier script drafts). Scott recently confirmed that Blade Runner 2 is happening, but refrained from offering an update on the status of the Prometheus followup.

Scott did provide Metro with the following intriguing, but elusive, food-for-thought about the state of things in the aftermath of the conclusion to Prometheus:

“… You’ve got a person [Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw] with a head in a bag [Michael Fassbender as the android David] that functions and has an IQ of 350. It can explain to her how to put the head back on the body and she’s gonna think about that long and hard because, once the head is back on his body, he’s dangerous… They’re going off to paradise but it could be the most savage, horrible place. Who are the Engineers?”

When Screen Rant‘s Roth Cornet spoke with Scott this past summer, he went into greater detail about his tentative storyline for the Prometheus sequel. Moreover, Fox President of Production Emma Watts announced a couple months back that Scott is “incredibly excited’ about the project and indicated it could arriving as soon as 2014 or 2015; that could very well still be the case, for all we know.

Blade Runner 2 Female Protagonist Ridley Scott Teases Prometheus Sequel; Says Blade Runner 2 Is Happening

Meanwhile, development of the Blade Runner sequel has pushed forward in the past year, thanks to information about the film having a female protagonist and Scott even offering a possible description of the opening scene. Scott assured Metro that the project is indeed moving forward, after which he playfully broached the idea of Harrison Ford’s return (though, such rumors were shot down several months ago):

“[The 'Blade Runner' sequel is] happening. With Harrison Ford? I don’t know yet. Is he too old? Well, he was a Nexus-6 so we don’t know how long he can live [laughs]. And that’s all I’m going to say at this stage.”

Prometheus left the door so wide open that, in my opinion, the film almost feels more like the first volume in a two-part (three-part?) saga rather than just a standalone picture. Blade Runner, on the other hand, has sustained its popularity over the years in no small part due to the unanswered questions it raises. That is to say, if I had to choose, a Prometheus sequel sounds like the movie that Scott should tackle next. We’ll just have to wait and see if that actually happens, of course.

Which are you more interested in, the Prometheus or Blade Runner sequel? Or would you prefer Scott continue to work on a non-sci-fi sequel after he wraps The Counselor?

  1. I’m more interested in a Prometheus sequel (:

    • Blade runner. much better

  2. More Prometheus plz.

  3. Definitely more Prometheus. Blade Runner would be interesting as well (but only without Harrison Ford please, that ship has sailed a long time ago) but that movie stands much better on its own than Prometheus.

I’m kinda bummed that they left the Deacon xenomorph behind on LV-223. I’d like to see more of that in a sequel. It was a very cool design and that last shot before the credits gave me chills. Hopefully they find a way to work that creature back into the story somehow.

    • Going back would be easily explained, they send a rescue crew to find out what happened. But Ridley wants to explore new aspects so I don’t think he will take us back there.

  4. Prometheus! If the sequel actually explains more and has more action, it will become one of the best sci fi movies ever!

  5. All it needs is a different writer, less back ground music to make it more sinister ( or make the back ground music as evil as the trailers were ), and more different creatures that have the same impact as the origianl Alien did.
A snake with an afro isn’t going to scare anyone!!

    • What snake with an afro? I missed that… can we get Samuel. Jackson to voice afro-snake? HAIL Ridley Scott’s new movie “afro snake staring Samuel. Jackson!!!

      • “I’ve had it…with these mother-f**ckin’ afro-snakes…on this mother-f**ckin spaceship!”

  6. Prometheus all the way!!!!!!!

  7. Prometheus sequel if it answers questions and ties into the Alien franchise directly. If not then Blade Runner.

  8. I would be Most Interested In Seeing Prometheus Sequel over Blade Runner 2

  9. I liked Prometheus and the film left lots of questions to be answered.

I was disappointed that The Enigeer (aka. Space Jockey) turn out to be human instead of some unknown specie with a elephant face.

The Enigeer had a chance of becoming the next scary monster but I think there were less scary moments in Prometheus.

The final battle between Shaw and The Enigeer should be longer and scary.

Still if Prometheus 2 is ever made, I hope it turns out to be scarer and gives lots of chills.

Also reveals what happened to that Alien at the end.

  10. Im probably one of the few that didnt care for blade runner, so im more excited for a prometheus sequel.

    • I knew if I waited long enought I would get to meet all three of you. :)

  11. Is it sacrilige to want nither Prometheus was so bad it hurt and did we learn nothing from Indy 4 Ford is not what he was even worse i dont think Scott is what he once was Robin Hood was a train wreck .

  12. Me and some friends were thinking about the titles to The Trilogy.

    Prometheus. Paradise. Perdition.

  13. @ignur rant

    Good titles dude lol

  14. Prometheus 2 (or whatever it will be called) is what I’m hoping to see 1st.
Scott is one of the few directors who can pick and choose what he wants so I’m sure it’s entirely up to him but I think the longer we wait for a sequel to Prometheus the greater than chances of the public and also the studio loosing interest. And it would be a crime not to get the answers we are seeking as movie fans…

  15. I loved Prometheus as a stand alone film, and as the first part of what Scot says will be a trilogy. I think part ofthe reason Some people were disappointed At the cinema was the trailer made it look every bit the space-horror alien was, and it blatantly isn’t. What it is though, in my opinion, is a fantastic sci-fi movie.a little rough around the edged in places, sure, but compelling throughout. too early to tell re. Bladerunner as of yet, but I’ve been waiting to see what the deal is with that big elephant headed thing from alien for the best part of two decades. Might not have the answers yet, but if part one is anything to go by, old ridders can take as long explaining It to me as he likes.

    • The ‘elephant’ helmet was directly referenced/explained in Prometheus – you saw the Engineer don a very similar piece of apparatus did you not?

  16. Without doubt, im most interested in a sequel to prometheus. I want to know more about the engineers (culturally/historically speaking) and the relationship dynamic that exists between the humans and the engineers. Bring on prometheus 2! Stat!

  17. I,for one would like to see Blade Runner 2 turned over to Nolan as his next project.

  18. i´m more interested in -promh.-. like you´ve written the story have so many open questions and the end was a bit like a ´cliffhanger´,because her journey goes to – the engineers- and did not end there. as for -bl.runner-,i´ve watched the extended cut or directors cut(the long version),don´t know which from them because it was on t.v.,as much i like dark stories,i´ve found the movie boring, it was unique and interesting but not my type, i like slow movies and dark rainy scenes, but that was too boring intense.

  19. Prometheus please.

Thing is, I actually must be one of the few people who was satisfied with that movie. The only questions I were left with after it finished were “What happens next?” and “Why did the Engineers create us only to want to destroy us?”

I’d say it must be people who grew up with the Alien franchise that are unhappy with Prometheus but then, I’m one of them who grew up with the movies too so I can’t think of any other reason for the complaints than just people wanting everything spoonfed to them now with every scene detailed even if that kills the mystique of a movie

    • You are not alone.

      • If Scott had gone the whole 9 yards with the Alien prequel idea I would have left the cinema very disappointed…all the people who went expecting it to lead directly up to the events of the original film were so wrong (sorry guys :P) to do so. Prometheus was a very ambitious film and one of a very high standard, I was extremely satisfied with what he achieved with Prometheus. I’m excited to get as far away from the xenomorph as possible, I LOVE the Alien franchise, but Scott has touched on something bigger with this film…looking forward to his next chapter.

  20. Both Prometheus and Blade Runner 2(&3)!
That would be great and hurry up because Ridely is 75 now!
Don’t get me wrong i hope he will be minimum 100 years old! :)

  21. Prometheus 2 will probably be called Paradise, right?

  22. Nexus-6 replicants do not live longer than four years
as Tyrell infamously explains to Roy in Blade Runner.
Ridley saying the Nexus-6 replicants lifespan is
unknown is a concept differing from the film.

    Scott has made changes before.
Ridley decided to make clear Deckard
was a replicant which was not the case
in the book nor to the original screenwriter
let alone Harrison Ford who played Deckard.

Dekard as replicant makes the story much weaker
for me so I was not pleased with the change
and bringing Ford back in the sequel is
problematic as replicants do not age.
They expire but do not grow old.

Of course, Ridley can change that too.
If I were to bring Ford back to the sequel
I would’nt allow for replicants to age inorder
to explain the change in appearance of Ford.

I would make Ford the human his Deckard replicant
was based on which logically explains the aging
and opens many story possibilities on its own.

    • But they never stated he was a Nexus 6. Sean Young’s character was a replicant too and they stated she didn’t have a lifespan limit so he could quite easily still be around as the groundwork was really clearly laid out in the film.

  23. I look forward to both, in my opinion alien, prometheus, and bladerunner are all of one universe. Sooo either one will be a continuation of the story that Ridley has decided to spin for us. Honestly i hope he gives us a 3rd prometheus, and 3rd bladerunner… not for the sake of trilogies, but each story line has enough open space to be fleshed out and still leave one wanting more. Most of all, i want him to create a sequel to the original alien after he is finished with prometheus and bladerunner. The alien sequels were in my humble opinion crap in comparison to mr.Scott’s original vision. All 3 sequels lacked the sensual designs of H.R. Giger. And while various actors and actresses performed admirably in each of the alien films, thier not scott’s and giger’s . It’s kind of like rage against the machine v.s. audioslave. 75% same but that other 25% changed the animal soooooo much. They should have named themselves audiosuck. Whatever Ridley makes im sure i’ll be happy with it. Heres hoping he has sci-fi addiction for several more films before he moves onto what i hope is the fantasy franchise. We could use more legends( in general, not a sequel to tom cruises legend)

    • Giger did work on Alien 3 and Resurrection, Phil, and the mural in Prometheus is his.

      • Curses – didn’t mean to include Resurrection.

      • I know, i just mean the combo team or Ridley and Giger… Ridley the visionary of the story and Giger the visual art director of the alien and sets. The first sequel was o.k. but i would rather have Ridley’s sequel

      • Dear sir, i know, i just mean the combo team or Ridley and Giger… Ridley the visionary of the story and Giger the visual art director of the alien and sets. The first sequel was o.k. but i would rather have Ridley’s sequel

        • Ah right, I’m with you.

  24. I completely agree about Prometheus – I think of it being act one in a two (or three) part story. I really can’t wait to see what happens next

  25. I for one loved Prometheus, and Blade runner and eagerly await sequels. I cant believe so many people didn’t enjoy Prometheus.. it was epic and full of mystery and leaving you wanting more. I enjoyed Aliens but Alien 3 and resurrection where dull no brain action movies that the Prometheus haters probably enjoyed. I just hope Ridley gives us the sequels and A.S.A.P. He is one of the greatest directors of all time.

  26. I would actully like to see a true movie verstion of “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” “Blade Runner” is great, don’t get me wrong. But the book is so diffrent if someone didn’t know any better they would not even make a connection.

  27. Can this A.D.D generation even handle a blade runner movie? (assuming that it might be really slow like the first blade runner.)

    • Screw the A.D.D. generation. He’s supposed to do it for my generation. ;)

  28. Prometheus II please. i want to see what happens with the Engineers and David. also i want to see how the Aliens arrive on LV-426

  29. Prometheus needs to be the main focus. We (Alien fans) need to know more.
