‘Riddick’ Full Trailer: Riddick Gets Unchained (Plus New Images)

Seven years is a long wait between movies in a franchise, but after The Chronicles of Riddick failed to light up the box office in 2006, it’s something of a miracle that a third film about Vin Diesel’s “shined” space mercenary received a green light at all. Simply titled Riddick, David Twohy’s picture only received its first teaser about a month ago; today, the full trailer has landed online and expanded on the promise of the previous clip.

Riddick sees the anti-hero of the title in a situation that calls to mind the events of Pitch Black more than a decade ago. This time around, Riddick is left to the mercies of a harsh alien world before running into two groups of bounty hunters out for his blood; the trailer makes the film sound like a return to the character’s roots as well as a continuation on some of the ideas introduced in Chronicles. Check out the full synopsis below:

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

So Riddick pits Diesel against legions of dangerous alien monsters as well as human predators who want him dead. At first blush, the movie bears much more of a resemblance to Pitch Black than Chronicles, which should bode very well for its chances at the box office and could be taken as a strong sign of its quality. Either way, Riddick is back, and he looks meaner than ever, so fans of the series should be getting pretty excited right about now- and if not, the gallery of images above ought to help.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Are you read for Riddick to tear his way across the big screen again?

  1. Come on Vin….. it’s the same damn film as Pitch Black

    • You read my mind

      • …and my mind.

    • I agree. While “Pitch Black” was a good film, I think seeing it again kind of takes a little away. I do not know. Perhaps more will be revealed.

      • It’s funny how Star Trek can use the same story beats for five movies and nobody bats an eye, but let Riddick do the same thing and people are all over it. Though to be fair, I don’t know how you guys feel about the latest Star Trek…

  2. u people make me laugh i read a comment quote “its just the same as pitch black” seriously what is wrong with u the film has been privetly financed so no big budget, which is what will make it better than tcor, plus diesel is passionate about riddck he would not of bought out a 3rd movie if he thought for a second that it would be s***, cut the trailer a break so what if the cgi looks bad who gives a sh*t Riddick is back with vengence baby!!

    • Understand the comment.

Same as Pitch Black is a valid observation.

Deserted planet with hyper agressive beasties
      Riddick getting chained up
Ambling about in the dark with torches (don’t any of these worlds have moons to light the night sky…)
Riddick having to team up with an enemy to survive
If they add a rain sequence i may just cry.

Thing is I think most of us here would agree Pitch Black rocks, this stands a better then 50:50 chance that this will rock as well

Don’t confuse “same as Pitch Black” with “this is pants”

What I get from these comments and expressed myself is disappointment that we’re not seeing anything NEW.

I personally want a Pitch Black prequal….. see what Riddick was like BEFORE he started to care about (certain) people. What has he done to get the bounties on his head, why is John’s after him, what prisons has he been in and how did he escape.

  3. looks like a cheap mash up between the first movie and the first half of the second movie. Never cared much for this franchise don’t know why I took the time to watch the movies, let alone type this comment.
    Oh well haters gonna hate
    Flame on!

  4. a whole army/empire in the movies before…..now….with 6 people on a desert island…….

  5. Almost like a Pitch Black reboot. I hope they tell what happened with the Necromancers, most likely they just betrayed him and shot him in a pod to a harsh planet or something.
Pitch Black was great so I am looking forward to this one only the whole group of bounty hunters coming after him thing is getting a little tired. When will someone just recruit him for something epic.

    • Karl Urban is in this so the Necros are in it at some point.

      • Ah.. see below didn’t get down that far

  6. I think it looks good, I thought PB was very good and COR was ok.

Is Vaco gonna be in it? The one thing I wanted to see from the second movie is Riddick and Vaco fight to the death.

Would like to see Vaco and his queen chick dump off Riddick to die, he fights the aliens and bounty hunters, escapes the planet, tracks down Vaco and kills him.

    • Karl Urban will be appearing as Vaako in Riddick, so Im sure there will be some explanation on what happened from the ending of COR.

  7. “Chronicles of Riddick” was a great movie.

  8. Chronicles is better that pitchblack hands down. For one!!

    • Agree !

  9. So is this a sequel or a prequel

    • sequal to CoR

  10. Awesome!!

  11. this is a old movie but its action scenes are good for the year it came out

  12. So, he’s no longer king? Did he go back to the pitch black place? This a prequel?

  13. I understand the comments saying it’s the same thing as Pitch Black, Pitch Black reboot, etc. because the trailer gives that impression. However, it is only a trailer and we have no idea what the movie will be like. Besides, if it is just like Pitch Black, is that really a bad thing?

    • “This ain’t nothin’ new.”

  14. I really liked Chronicles and the Necromancers. Great villians!

  15. Have you guys seen the fan art at the Riddick movie website http://www.riddick-movie.com some of it is really quite cool.

    • Some of the art is pretty awesome actually. Any of it yours lol ;) ?

      • I wish I had the talent, unfortunately not though.

        • Ditto at the moment, lol

  16. When I saw this trailer, my first thought was, that this is what Prometheus should have been like (Prometheus, that is, if it hadn’t taken itself so pretentiously as to attempt to wed the origins of humanity to the genesis of the Alien monsters, unless its secret premise was that we are all really monsters, but i digress lol).
In other words: bad-ass characters forced into awesome terrifying battle-the-fu*king-scary-monsters-for-survival sequences.
I can’t wait for Riddick, looks freaking awesome.

    • God nooooo. This trailer looks cheap, tacky and is an umbrella of poor CGI. Straight to DVD.

      • I’ve got a feeling there is a lot more to this film and story than what they showed in the trailer. For ex, I don’t think Karl Urban or any of the Necromancers showed up in the trailer, although he is one of the cast. There probably is a big third act that we haven’t seen a hint of yet. this movie might be a surprise breakout success, boosted by Vin Diesel’s star power from FF6.
The CGI is passable. The monster designs were actually pretty cool. I bet the concept art is dope. I saw some of the artistic design for Chronicles of Riddick and it was magnificently awesome. I hope since it is still Diesel and Twohy involved that there is a continuity of artistic vision.

  17. I loved “Pitch Black.” The first time I saw “Chronicles…” I wasn’t sure what to make of it… but I’ve seen it three times since and it gets better every time. I am WAAAY looking forward to “Riddick.”

  18. …and I always preferred Katee Sackhoff with shorter hair!

  19. I want Riddick action figure toys for the movie.

  20. Looking forward to it.. so tired of zombie movies.. sci-fi action is where its at.. it would be great if the motion comic is placed in front of the movie so the audience gets a good feel of how he gets on the planet. Riddick has some similarities of the comic LOBO.. which I also like.. Its going to do well in the theaters..
