If Vin Diesel is anything, he’s a man of the people (just ask any of the more than 27 million people who “like” the actor’s Facebook page.) – and as a man of the people, Diesel gives his fans what they want, namely updates on the third installment to the popular Chronicles of Riddick franchise.

Recently, Diesel shared some information about Riddick 3, including plans for casting and the possibility of a 2012 release date, on his Facebook page. Diesel also shared a new piece of concept art for the film, which we’ve shared below.

In his usual laid-back style, Diesel expressed his gratitude to his fans for pushing the project to fruition and for requesting an R-rating, which is something a lot of studios aren’t comfortable doing. Diesel also talked about how much he enjoys concept art and preproduction work.

Here is the full quote from Diesel’s Facebook page:

In the spirit of Creative Sundays…I asked the director to send a key frame that I could post it for you.

Concept art and Key frames allow a production to explore possibilities before actually committing to the film. The road to the “R” rating, that so many of you were vocal about, has been a long one. The advantage however, (never empower the negatives) was that we were allowed a really extensive preproduction process. The art work so good, the artists have really outdone themselves in illustrating this world at it’s [sic] early stage.

When this film comes to the screen…know that you willed it into being!

I got two meetings today that I have been prepping for…one with the Director and another one with the head of the studio to discuss casting and the 2012 release date. Like always, I appreciate having your voice present in these meetings.

P.S. Share your thoughts…casting, release date, mythology or anything else. It’s Sunday and we are, at the very least, allowed to be creative in thought.

Interestingly, Diesel’s comments about casting and the 2012 release date no longer appear on his Facebook page, which means that Diesel (or his PR agency) must have edited them. Luckily, Latino Review grabbed the comments in their entirety prior to the edits. Does the edit mean that the studio isn’t shooting for a 2012 release anymore?

We’ve been following news on Riddick 3 since March 2009, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the film was delayed a little further – but it seems like Diesel and everyone else involved in the film are committed to getting this movie made. If it doesn’t come out in 2012, it will surely be a disappointment to the Riddick faithful, but, rest assured, it will probably come out eventually.

Oh, and when it does come out, expect plenty of bloody violence. Just check out these two pieces of concept art from Diesel’s Facebook page.

While they may not win Oscars, the Riddick films have a huge fanbase and were instrumental in helping Vin Diesel launch his career as an action star. Clearly, the actor has a softspot for the franchise, and it’s cool to see him sharing updates on the project regularly with his fans.

Hopefully, things come together on the film quickly and everyone’s favorite Furyan ex-convict can start slicing and dicing monsters on the big screen once again.

  1. Can’t wait to see some footage or images from the actual film when it starts production…

  2. Been waiting so long for this!!! Art looks great

  3. That second art looks completely epic.

  4. If the story is very good I can forgive them using less money on effects. Having commented on “The Thing” remake I’m wondering what the story would be like if those creatures in pic #2 weren’t just wild animals but the souls and will of some of Riddick’s human hunters? Bound to the wild animals who have devoured his pursuers. It would make them smarter, more dangerous, and really angry. If they make it mandatory that you have to have a string that links this movie to the past then at least they could is put some twist on that string…

  5. Why Chronicles Of Riddick 3?
Why the 3 next to the title, when this is the second film?
Pitch Black supposed to be first from the Riddick’s adventures?
That means this is the final one from a strange wannabe trilogy.
    Odd, if u ask me!
Clearly you don’t make a sequel to an original film that was produced 11 years agoo and say, hell ya, it’s a trilogy!
P.S. As you have noticed the latest artwork doesn’t have the number 3 on it, as the previous one had, beside those three dots which can mean completely anything else!

  6. He needs to go back fighting alien creatures cause thats what made this movie period!

    • Agreed, not those guys in the second movie, that was (in my opinion) lame… In infinite space, I think that the guys thinking up these plot ideas would use aliens like they used in pitch black… Maybe one boarded the ship when they left that planet? (Alien 3 plot, oh well, it worked)

How about some creature that lives underground and pulls people in? (Tremors) How about something that isnt human in appearence?

      Riddick VS Predator!!!

  7. Nice, I enjoyed Pitch Black, Dark Fury, and Chronicles of Riddick. I look forward to the next film. An R rating would be nice.

  8. Art looks pretty awesome

  9. I bet the art is better than film. Was expecting so much from the last one and got nothing. Give it up…..please.

  10. Finish the storyline from the second movie and then you can go fight big nasty creatures for no other reason than to show off new and unique knives. lol

  11. In Fast Five, it looked like Vin had put on some flab. I hope he’s working out to get back in CoR shape.

  12. Reboot with The Rock.

  13. Pitch Black was decent enough, although I originally thought it was awesome when I saw it in theaters way back when, but I didn’t think it held up very well over time when I re-watched it about 6 months ago. It’s one of those ones you think is smarter and more complex than it actually is when you’re a teenager but as an adult you realize it’s very run of the mill.

But hey, it looked positively Oscar worthy next to Chronicles of Riddick. What an absolutely abhorrent, ugly mess that was. It was almost completly unwatchable and believe me, I tried. The story was just ridiculous, the characters uninteresting, and visually it was painful to look at. I have no interest whatsoever in seeing the follow up unless I see overwhelmingly positive reviews. Riddick himself can be a fairly interesting character and and burried somewhere deep in the Riddick universe is potential for a good movie, I just don’t have high hopes unless the inept, misguided direction of the previous entry is purged. Hopefully they don’t randomly shift genres again. The shift from a deliberating paced, atmospheric, fright fest to a supposed space opera of epic proportion, only without the fun, didn’t exactly work last time. Maybe this time they’ll shift genre’s to talky hard science fiction lol.

  14. They should call the new movie:

” The Chronicles of Riddick – Keep What You Kill “

    • mr von the last in chronical movie the necromongers’s theme was you keep what you kill. If you were paying attention you would know that
