Update: Rick and Morty Fans offer $1000s for real Szechuan Sauce

After twenty long years, Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland is finally getting his hands on some of McDonald's Szechuan Sauce. During an SDCC panel, Roiland revealed the amazing news that McDonald's has promised to deliver an entire jug of their legendary discontinued McNugget sauce, and that he and show co-creator Dan Harmon plan to sample the sauce together.

Szechuan Sauce was offered by McDonald's for only a brief time as part of a promotion for the 1998 Disney film Mulan, and ever since then Roiland has been jonesing for another taste. So profound is Roiland's Szechuan craving that he even worked it into Rick and Morty as a joke in the Season 3 premiere that ran on April Fools' Day, revealing Rick's own crazed obsession with the sauce. After the episode, fans too became obsessed with Szechuan, bombarding McDonald's with requests to reintroduce the sauce and even launching an online petition.

At Friday's Rick and Morty SDCC panel, Roiland told fans that McDonald's has pledged to send him a jug of Szechuan Sauce next week, giving him a chance to finally end twenty years of agony (via Huffington Post). Roiland says that he and Dan Harmon will sample the sauce together on video and capture any potential "disappointing reactions." Roiland then briefly outlined the efforts he has gone through to get his hands on the sauce, including some in-depth Szechuan sleuthing that led him all the way to far-flung Canada:

“I heard they had a limited batch at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada. I called every McDonald’s in L.A. and went online. I even might have tried to connect with people in Canada to see if they could mail it to me ― and that failed.”

Szechuan Sauce had seemingly passed into history forever before the episode where Rick reveals his fascination with the McDonald's concoction and later confesses to Morty that getting his hands on the sauce again is the actual driving motivation behind all his actions on the show. "It's my one-armed man," Rick rages at Morty, a reference to the amputee killer relentlessly sought by the David Janssen character in the classic TV series The Fugitive.

Fans of Rick and Morty probably feel like they've been waiting almost 20 years to see a new episode of the animated Adult Swim series, and in July they'll finally get to sample the sweet Szechuan that is Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's insane sci-fi comedy creation. Hopefully there won't be too many "disappointing reactions."

Rick and Morty season 3 premieres Sunday, July 30th at 11:30pm on Adult Swim.
