Rhys Ifans Talks Being The Lizard in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

While it’s true that 2011 was a banner year for superhero films – Green Hornet, Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, and Captain America – 2012 is destined to be a banner year for major superhero films like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Speaking of the Spider-Man reboot, Rhys Ifans – the man who’s playing Spider-Man’s kindest rogue, Dr. Connors (A.K.A. The Lizard) – recently spoke in detail about his role in the upcoming film.

On what makes The Lizard so special – courtesy of MTV Splash Page – Rhys Ifans said:

“The majority of comic book villains are pure evil, but Curt Connors is an exception. Curt Connors is a good man who initially wants to save the world but he gets hungry and greedy and reckless and he pays the price for that.”

Eh, it’s arguable that most of the Spider-Man villains – and a majority of the best supervillains in general – have a complicated quality to them. It’s something Sam Raimi picked up from the get-go. Norman Osborne wasn’t good by any means, but he was more insane than he was “pure evil.” Likewise, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Venom, and so forth, were all very complicated “bad guys.” Though it’s true, of course, that The Lizard was one of the few Spider-Man rogues to be a totally good guy when unaffected by his evil, Lizard-based super powers.

On what makes Spider-Man interesting when compared to other household superhero names like Batman and Superman, Ifans said:

“I just love the whole Spider-Man thing because Superman is so kind of godlike, he comes from another planet, Batman is this inaccessible, unapproachable millionaire, and Peter Parker is this schoolboy who’s bullied and I think that’s the kind of enduring appeal to that story. We can all relate to his bullying and the kind of flux that puberty induces in a young boy becoming a man.”

On Emma Stone’s role as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man:

“Emma works with me. Emma’s character Gwen Stacey is a student who works at my laboratory.”

When asked why he wouldn’t disclose more details, Ifans said:

“You don’t want me to turn 9-foot-tall and green and covered in scales and lick your face until you die.”

I think it’s safe to say that everyone wants to see that – on the big screen – when The Amazing Spider-Man comes out. (In July of next year.)

  1. *”Billionaire” Rhys. Bruce Wayne is a billionaire.

    • Thank you Roshan :) millionaire is just so last week 😉

      • ah-HA! I SEE what YOU did THERE 😀

      • ha!

  2. [Uncle]Ben

are they college students or HS students in this?

    • Parker is still in High School in this one.

      • Cool. I like HS Spiderman (and Spectacular Spiderman). Very relatable. I like Garfield but I still feel he is a tad too old for the role but im definately still all for this flic. Despite my imense hatred of the costume.

You can take away the red undies, GL’s white gloves, Thor’s helmet, and even everything that made the x-men distinguishable but not Spiderman! no. why. so cold. so very cold.

    • Yeah, they’re in high school, which is a good move, in my opinion. Actually, the fact that Gwen’s going to be Connors’ lab assistant reminds me a lot of the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon more than anything from the books, which is kind of cool.

      • Yeah I agree. I quite enjoyed the show so I have no problem with this.

  3. I like how in the picture the Lizard is like “Rawr! I’m scary” and Spider-man is like “Oh my God, don’t eat me”

  4. “You don’t want me to turn 9-foot-tall and green and covered in scales and lick your face until you die.”

Replace Ifans with Megan Fox, and you have the exact way I wanna die. Oh, and replace “Your face” with “My member”.

    • The International Network of Eskimo Brothers strikes again!!

      • Yee-Haw!

        • I’m pumped!

  5. Everyone is so caught up with TDKR and The Avengers – it seems The Amazing Spiderman is merely an after thought. It seems as if Sony and Marvel are not that enthusiastic about promoting TAS.
It’s interesting that the Spidey reboot will debut 10 years after the first Raimi Spiderman. And it will premier just 3 weeks before TDKR.
Wouldn’t it be a blast if TAS and TDKR both opened on the same day? lol
What a difference ten years makes.

    • Well… I think this movie is going to be like x-men first class… People where like: THOR!, Captin Amerca! & Green lantern!. Next thing you know… X-mem first class came up and it turn out to be better then the rest!. I think the same thing is going to happen with TAS. Everyone is going to be like: Avenger! & TDKR!… And the amazing spider man is going to end up to be the best super hero movie of the summer of 2012 (not saying that I don’t like the avengers or TDKR) lol that would be funny.

    • Hey buddy, Shut up and wait…because as soon as they show a lot of set photos/videos or in depth trailers your types always complain and whine about how “they showed us too much”…REALLY

    • @jokers wild
Your ranting is mis directed. As I’ve already stated, if you or anyone else isn’t getting their proper dose of TAS news, blame Sony and Marvel.
The fact that the production has been so low key is not a good omen.
It’s pretty bad when the only source of any news has primarily come from Ifans these past few weeks/months.

      • @Kryptonic

i understand where you’re coming from. I don’t take it as such a bad omen though. being in the stage of post-production they’re in, they are working out most of the visual effects and stuff. should be an interesting flick to watch. i’m just excited for it. granted, i may be wrong…but you really never know until he actual movie comes out.

        • @JW

Agree with you. I never pre judge a movie (or any other work of art) until I see the finished product.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Spiderman, and so I hope TAS will turn out well. I also would like to see a lot more about what’s going on.
          Let’s hope for the best….

          • @ Kryptonic

yea i’m just glad Marvel Studios is in on it this time. the Raimi films were ok but they just sacrificed too much of the Peter Parker character for me to enjoy them as a fan. As movies, they were decent…well, 1 and 2 atleast lol. All i want is a more accurate depiction of Peter, along with a good storyline for Spidey

  6. I wanna see some lizard pics 😀

  7. The dark knight will rise and spidey will go splat!!!

    • “If Spiderman or Batman can’t protect the box office, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it!”

  8. The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers will fall before THE DARK KNIGHT RISES!!! THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will own yall’s ASSES!!!

    • Bzzzt. Wrong. But thanks for playing. :-)

      • Comment of the day.

    • *cough* yeah right!! *cough, cough!*

  9. This is shaping up to be a bloody awful film.

  10. @Ignur Rant, you had me in stitches there! lol

    • While I don’t have complete faith in The Avengers I’d be willing to bet your immortal soul that it wont bomb. And yes, for most marvel fans the big draw is seeing 8 heroes on the same screen. Marvel can’t afford for this movie to bomb. Whether this film will be a deep cinematic story with serious themes or just a fun flick with awesome action scenes remains to be seen.

BTW they are technically heroes. Agent Phil Coulson is the only real superhero. heh heh

  11. @Moviesrulez. Two words: X and Men. And it worked. Especially Part 2

    • Especially part 5 IMO.

  12. I’m just not buying the Rhys Ifans pulling off a character driven antagonist role that isn’t like his Notting Hill schtick. Also not buying Dennis Leary in this one either, unless his on screen time is managed well. Also not sure if russel crowe and kevin costner in man of steel is good casting. Kevin spacey overplayed his role and sucked life out of the movie, which should have been about superman returning and was more about lex luthor. I can see both of these actors doing that to man of steel, which should also be about superman and not about jor-el or jonathan kent.

  13. I know that it is impossible to wait but can’t we wait to say if the 3 movies are good or not until after they come out? You can’t tell by the trailers at all.

  14. I love Rhys Ifans and dont care what anyone says about him.

    haters can go to hell.
