I really enjoyed this film and your review,Vic.I thought the costume was great and the casting was well done. Though I wasn't very happy with the whole Superman's son thing and Luthor being the only menace. I prefer a more John Byrne-ish Luthor. Those are the only reasons why I wouldn't give this film a 5 out of 5 if I were you.I think some more action with Superman hitting things like a powereful villain like Mongul,Parasite,Metallo,Braniac,Darkseid(no,save him for a live action JLA),etc.would've been good. I love that they kept the classic Superman theme.I wish they'd have kept Danny Elfman's Batman theme for Batman Begins and given the batsuit a more comic book friendly treatment. The original Batman and Superman themes are hard to top.

Just came back from my 1st Superman viewing last night and....I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!

Kudos to Bryan Singer for a job well done, he was right in choosing Routh as Superman, I cant believe how he got it right!

I will give this another 2nd-3rd look, then might be able to give a more objective review.

The Man of Steel is back!

Thanks, Tish. The more I think about it, and with the lackluster box office there are more problems with the film than I thought of when writing the initial review.

I'll probably do a post on it here pretty soon.

Nice, even-handed review. I'm more critical though: Half-an-hour might have been trimmed throughout the third act, mostly ad nauseum lingering closeups of pensive faces ("ok, ok, I got it, they're tense!"), and not only would we have not missed anything, it would have made for a tighter, more involving film.

One comment about the glasses during the Smallville sequence: I took it that until Clark's SuperVision(tm) developed fully, he was perceived as nearsighted. As his powers developed, his vision improved; until then, he would "need" glasses. When he discovers he can hover mid-air, there's a subtle implication that for the first time, he can see clearly without his glasses.

Melt,

Yeah, ran into the same IMAX issue... first tix I bought online were for a non-3D show, so I got a credit for those and bought for the 3D version.

There are only about 20 minutes of 3D in the film, but if you haven't seen any 3D recently (other IMAX films) you should definitely check it out. The only way I can describe it is it's like Hi-Def on steriods. :P

After the couple of seconds it takes to adjust, it's crystal clear, not exaggerated and makes you feel like you're in the scene.

Great review Vic. Agreed on most of your points. What I was really curious about though is what you thought of the 3d effects. I saw it in IMAX as well, but with no 3d (I assumed all IMAX theaters were 3d capable - I was wrong).

Is it worth tracking down in 3d if I see the film again?

I loved this movie and I liked it better than the original. There were a few logic issues I had with it, and I was scared that the plot was going to deal more with Lois's kid. I was rather disappointed with Bryan Singer's Wolverine tribute - I mean X-men movies (hundreds of people with superpowers and hardly any superpower action to be seen), but we actually saw Superman using his abilities, and using them rather intelligently. I'm definitely buying the DVD...but now I wish I'd seen it in the IMAX...

Thanks, Simone. I thought it was good, not great and I was on the fence about giving it a 3.5 vs. a 4, but what the heck, my reviews don't carry any weight anyway, right?
