Kel,

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that. Kind of like what they're doing with classic Star Trek remastered. On the other hand it's a miracle we ever even had the opportunity to see this version so I'll take what I can get. :-)

I liked it but I'm ticked that they didn't use today's special effects for it. Most of the special effects and action sequences they had to recreate anyway,so why not use today's special effects? Wouldn't that have been cool to see?

I thought the ending in the Donner version was pretty emotional as well, and I just can't abide by an ending to a Superman movie that ends with a "magic kiss" that erases Lois' memory!

Definately good to see Brando back in Superman two. This is in most respects an improved version of this movie.
My only reservation, and where I have to pat Lester on the back though, is in the final scene between Clark and Lois. I have always found Margot Kidder's "like being married to a doctor" scene to be so honest and heart wrenching, and Donner's 'Oh well, see ya' around sometime' just does not compare.

Dale,

Yeah, good points. In the commentary Tom also pointed out that if the Earth stopped rotating and switched directions everyone would go flying off into space. :-)

Remember the movie was filmed almost 30 years ago before comic book movies were all the rage. I think folks gave it a lot more leeway than today's viewers.

Vic,

I'd been waiting for you to review this since I've pretty much found your likes and dislikes with movies to be in tune with mine and was curious as to your opinion.

Like you I found, by and large, this cut to be a better version and would have loved to see Donner's truly complete vision. I loved Lois' use of investigation and trickery in discovering the Superman/Clark Kent relationship. It's much more in tune with her nature as a reporter.

What I didn't like, as you mentioned, was going back to the time travel well again (whether or not it was Donner's idea). I think it causes a lot of problems.

First, is Superman's solution to anything that doesn't go quite the way he wanted is to turn back time?

Second, unless I'm somehow misunderstanding the mechanics of Superman related time travel (i.e. it's not directly going back in time) it causes story inconsistancies as described below:

A) The closing scene at the diner no longer makes any sense...he no longer had the original encounter with the trucker.
B) Didn't he also "erase" Jor-El's "sacrifice"?
C) Ditto his trist with Lois. This (for whoever it matters to) somewhat strains (if not cuts) the ties between Superman I & II and Superman Returns since (unless it happened at some other time) Lois has never (to use her words from SR) "done Superman".

In the end, to reiterate, I still found this to be the better version of the movie.

Dale
