		<description>Carol,

Like I said, I prefer more traditional art. As far as I&#039;m concerned at best abstract art is too subjective in how it is to be interpreted and at worst it&#039;s basically crap. :-)

<description>I know you&#039;re not arguing with me, Vic.

How do you relate to what I said about the Artists who painted in the caves? I would like to know.

		<description>Carol,

I&#039;m certainly not arguing with you. If you go see the film that&#039;s one of the arguments that come up: traditional vs abstract. Abstract art is much more subjective and personally I&#039;m not much of a fan of that. I much prefer traditional art where it&#039;s obvious to ANYONE that the artist possesses much skill. :-)

		<description>Vic,

Drawing and painting requires and demonstrates control over the brush, the pen, the canvas and the paint...

Dripping and smearing paint demonstrates no control over the brush, the pen, the canvas or the paint...

Jackson Pollack is not an Artist because he did not demonstrate that he could control the brush, the pen, the canvas or the paint. All 4-year-olds are also very good examples of people who are not Artists.

Let&#039;s start at the beginning with the cave paintings.

Let&#039;s say that 4-year-olds and Jackson Pollacks dripped and smeared paint in the caves.

What would we learn about the world from them? Would we be impressed and enlightened and proud that human beings were able to drip and smear paint on cave walls?

Would the hair stand up on the backs of our necks when we saw 12,000-year-old dripped and smeared paint?

No, but the cave Artist showed us his/her world by Drawing and Painting on those walls and we ARE awed and silenced in their presence.

Drips and smears are not paintings. People who drip and smear are not Artists.

As I said, I am an Artist and although I can drip and smear with the best, I also know that everyone else can drip and smear too.

What everyone else can&#039;t do is Draw and Paint. That&#039;s the difference between Artists and everyone else.

		<description>Carol,

I&#039;m not disagreeing with you at all, but isn&#039;t it much more subjective when it comes to abstract art? Look at Jackson Pollack&#039;s work... the common person would argue that anyone could dip a brush into a bunch of different paint cans and drip paint onto a huge canvas.

I happen to like Pollack&#039;s work, but I can see how people might say that.

<description>Paintings that both 4-year-olds and adults can paint are not Art. 4-year-olds and other adults cannot paint what an Artist can paint and that is the only criteria that should count. I am an Artist and what I do cannot be done by a 4-year-old or most adults.
