Sony Wins Rights to Thriller ‘Retreat’

Last year, we reported that Cillian Murphy (Inception), Thandie Newton (Crash), and Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin) were set to star in the psychological thriller Retreat. Now, we’ll actually get to see it.

Variety reports that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired the North American rights to Retreat, which is being directed by first-timer Carl Tibbetts. Previously, Tibbetts worked as editor on Alien vs. Predator (but don’t hold that against him ;-)).

Retreat is one of those low-budget films with an intriguing premise. A husband and wife go on holiday together to repair their marriage, only to meet a soldier in a hazmat suit warning about a deadly airborne virus. The rest of the film takes place inside of a cabin, where the three characters become paranoid about one another and the reality of the virus threat.

Here’s a longer version of the synopsis via Bloody Disgusting. Be advised that this synopsis is very detailed and contains some SPOILERS.

“In a last-ditch attempt to save their faltering marriage, Martin & Kate (Cillian Murphy & Thandie Newton) return to a beautiful, yet remote and unpopulated Scottish island that is home to Fairweather Cottage. A place where they once shared a romantic holiday.

Despite the warmth of autumnal log fires, Kate and Martin find their relationship is still cool and things only get worse when they lose contact with the mainland, and find themselves inexplicably stranded.

One morning a bloodied military man appears seemingly out of nowhere with terrifying news – a deadly airborne pandemic has broken out and is coming their way. Jack insists they seal themselves into the cottage to keep the fatal virus out.

Although unconvinced, Kate and Martin have little choice but to play along as Jack bit by bit seals the doors and windows. Even when he starts to board up the house, shutting them in entirely, Martin and Kate can’t agree on what to do.

With each nail that Jack hammers into the wooden doorframes, conflicts bubble to the surface, and Jack exploits the couple’s mistrust for his own ends.

But when Jack starts to turn abusive to Kate, she and Martin finally join forces to confront him.

In a series of tense twists the captive couple use all their ingenuity to try to escape from Jack, and from the retreat cottage that has become their prison.

And, just when it looks like they might gain the upper hand, a disturbing discovery turns everything upside down resulting in a violent and shocking conclusion.”

There are a ton of low-budget movies that come out with this same basic premise every year: three people stuck in a room under mysterious circumstances. Why? Because it’s cheap to film. Unlike a lot of low-budget films, however, Retreat actually has the cast to make it work.

Cillian Murphy has proven his skills in huge blockbusters like Inception, as well as an array of critically-acclaimed indie films. Likewise, Thandie Newton has appeared in Oscar-nominated films, while young Jamie Bell is regularly recognized as one of Hollywood’s most promising up-and-coming actors. Needless to say, if you’re a first-time director, you’re pretty lucky to have these three in your film.
