Resident Evil Retribution 3D Trailer Resident Evil: Retribution Trailer is A Big Sony Advertisement

It’s an exciting time for Resident Evil fans, with two major video games coming out, another rumored to be announced this week, and of course, the franchise’s fifth film, Resident Evil: Retribution debuting in September.

2010′s Resident Evil: Afterlife introduced 3D into the franchise and gave the series its largest box office haul yet, kick-starting a fifth installment into production for Paul W.S. Anderson to helm once again with his wife Milla Jovovich returning to play Alice on her quest to eradicate the Umbrella Corporation. The next movie is also coming in 3D and its first teaser trailer is now out.

After living off of only set photos and casting announcements these last few months, Sony Screen Gems has finally unveiled the first official Resident Evil: Retribution trailer and it’s something that fans of the series will be pleased with… or perhaps not due to how it’s presented. Take a look for yourself and take note of how odd the intro is:

Innovative marketing? Or something that doesn’t belong? The short teaser is introduced by 20+ seconds of ads for Sony mobile products. As for the actual footage of the film – played to the tune of the “Recognizer” track from TRON: Legacy - not much is shown in the teaser but there are loads of very evident CG shots and plenty of action in line with what fans should expect from the series.

The official Resident Evil Twitter account also shared the following banner:

From the official plot synopsis and cast, Resident Evil: Retribution is on track to offer the greatest fan service for those looking for the films to more closely relate to the story of the Capcom video games. From what we can piece together, the film runs full circle, tying into the original Resident Evil movie (and the rest of the series) and at the same time, introduces more key characters from the games, all of which will help explain the origin of the villains encountered both Afterlife and Retribution.

The official synopsis:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

While Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller – who played prominent roles in 2010′s Resident Evil: Afterlife - will not return (K-Mart, Chris & Claire Redfield are abducted by Umbrella), Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe and Shawn Roberts will for their respective roles, with Guillory stepping up as the film’s primary villain. Retribution will see other familiar faces for fans of the series as well, including Jason Isaacs, Michelle Rodriguez and Colin Salmon from the original Resident Evil and Oded Fehr who played a key role in Extinction and Apocalypse.

This fifth installment in the popular series also will finally introduce fan-favorite franchise characters from the games including Leon Kennedy (Johann Urb) and Barry Burton (Kevin Durand).  Milla Jovovich of course, returns as the series star, playing Alice.

Resident Evil: Retribution hits theaters September 14, 2012 in 3D.

  1. the Tron soundtrack? Seriously??

    • I know…I was watching the trailer wondering how much they had to pay Disney for that track…

How good was that soundtrack that you hear parts of it in commercials, and trailers for other movies?

  2. I love a mindless actuon fluck but This in no way represents Resident Evil. They should just call thus Milla Jovovich in ‘Slow Motion’.

I dont need a acene for scene adaptation if game but atleast keep the tone and vibe consistent. Cant wait for the reboot. This is trash.

    • Holy typo’s, Batman!

    • Ha, I thought the same thing. Mila and Michelle are hot that’s the only reason I watch this stuff when it comes out on DVD. You hit it on the head though, Mila in slo-mo is basically all this is going to be. ;)

As for Sony plugging themselves, I was fine with it. If they were do it all the time surely it would wear out it’s welcome.

  3. I love these movies. And I see nothing wrong with the beginning, I thought it was smart actually.

Let’s see all of the angry rants that come because of this trailer…

    • Same. Can’t wait for this film.

    • love the franchise, since it began, and enjoyed all 4,can´t wait for this!

  4. and what does this tell me? Sony is to Blame (maybe going to be umbrella!) ;)

  5. They’ve done the fake commercial campaign for the RE movies for years. Do you not remember the ad campaign for Resident Evil: Apocalypse? All the ads were presented like a commercial for skin cream produced by Umbrella… very much like L’Oreal or Maybelline commercials.

    • Uh, yea, those were for fake products. This trailer features actual sony products for 30 SECONDS. Seriously, they cut everything after the 29 sec mark and it would be a legit sony commercial.

  6. Ada Wong looks Hot! but I dont understand why they had to use the Tron Soundtrack for this Trailer cant wait to see Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine

    • can you tell us some secrets from avatar 2? and why have you long hair in wraith of the titans?

      • I’m sorry but I’ve never heard of WRAITH of the titans.

        • ROFL Wraith of the Titans.

  7. The beginning didn’t bother me either way, RE used this tactic before but overall the trailer was “ok”, i still want to see the film.

  8. The intro was odd, I thought I was looking at the wrong trailer but it caught my attention. I think the trailer works. Good call on the ‘Recognizer’ track beginning at 00:32. It backdropped the action sequences perfectly. I am intrigued as a RE fan and I can’t wait to see more RE: Retribution. Mills rocks.

  9. this is an amazing trailer not only is it going to incorporate more factors from the games but it is also going to show much needed story line to help understand how alice ended up how she did more of her past and getting to see old characters come back as well is going to be amazing this movie is going to be way better then what afterlife was because afterlife didnt have much of a very big story yet this movie will have way more of a story because it will delve into before the first movie and is going to show more of the final battle between the survivors and umbrella and as for the commercial in the beginning isnt really just advertisement it is what every movie other then the first one started with overall this movie is going to end up being way better then the last one im sure we can all agree on that

    • agreed!

    • Punctuation!

  10. That was the silliest thing I’ve seen in quite some time – most likely because Community is off-air right now.

  11. This is the worst trailer I have scene for a big-budget action movie and that is saying something considering how ridiculous the Afterlife trailer was. I can’t believe how badly they shoe-horned Sony products in the beginning. PS Vita has nothing to do with Zombies other than that the little handheld is DOA. I love Michelle Rodriguez, but I am not sure if I want to sit through another terrible Resident Evil movie to see her.

    • I disagree tremendously. I thought it was a very smart trailer and I like how it played on the trailer that worked so well for the ‘Resident Evil: Apocalypse’ trailer. Why shouldn’t Sony put it’s products into a movie or a movie trailer? I don’t see why it’s a problem – after all they are funding the thing.

The PS Vita is not DOA. It will be a success. I don’t see how it couldn’t.

I don’t understand what the problem is that people have with these movies. I think they’re all good for what they are – Zombie movies.

      • I agree Sin, if I saw that on TV ild think nothing of it, but then BAM! Milla Jovovich in tight leather and slow motion, I didn’t think it would end like that.

Makes me happy knowing that hollywood can still make original ideas, and that ad was original.

  12. o man cant wait to see rain and jill valentine again man this is gonna be awesome girl power =)

  13. OK. So Sony must be Umbrella or something like that because that was a lot of product placement in a short amount of time. That being said, I’ll watch but I’m gonna complain about it a great deal as a true RE otaku would.

And was that Patrick Stewart narrating? Because if it was, that would be awesome.

  14. I’ve only ever seen the first one. These look like nothing more than pure eye-candy movies (not necessarily a bad thing).

  15. As an RE Series fan from movie #1 (never have played the game) I have to say this one looks to be the big one with all the CGI monsters as shown in the short teaser. The film is definitely more then what I assumed it would be form early on set shoots and other info.

I take it that principal photography is done on RER??

    • Boy are you gonna be pissed if/when you do play the game, movie one is nothing like game one and so on and so forth like Vic said (but i’m paraphrasing) its brain candy, lets just hope who ever is marketing this they do enough or MJ will have another hissy fit hahahahahahahahah and what was with the sony ad at the start, if i was putting a product at the start of a trailer where it appears that the product had something to do with the end of the world, i would have gone with a made up product not my own, lol

  16. Slowly, but surely… Sony is becoming Umbrella.

And whats with her being in a “regular” looking neighborhood? Is that a virtual reality?

“culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true.”

Maybe the last three movies was virtual reality?

  17. I didnt mind the teaser myself the biggest problem i thought was the sony product was a little to long i think they should have stopped it at a sooner point and showen a little more of the actual film. I know these films don’t follow the games at all but i still enjoy these films and look foreword to this one!!!

  18. every part of my being wants to hate this because they took a great video game brand and pretty much ran it into the grown. as someone previously said, I don’t need a scene for scene adaptation but tone and vibe is key!

I probably go see this one because I’ve seen all the others. Personally I think Milla is a well played Alice, they just need a director that can do the brand justice. Bringing up the past with flashbacks should be a nice touch.

I still think they should do a spin off of the 4th RE game, the gamecube version. personal favorite still!

    • I’m almost certain Capcom beat Screen Gems to the punch with Resident Evil 5.

  19. Well clearly it’s not advertising, Sony just believes if the world ends it’ll be their fault somehow.

  20. so Sony actually IS THE UMBRELLA CORPORATION???? wow!!! how awesome is that twist!!!

  21. I am done with these films until someone who can actually direct comes along and remakes this garbage like nolan, or anyone. sorry just my opinion i like a bit of quality to my films, and story i cannot waist my time on crap.

    • Wow, this Nolan guy is popular, isn’t he? Every time a film maker does something not everyone agrees with, this Nolan guy gets asked to step in.

      • @avatar_popco
RIGHT?!?? isn’t that something?? From what i’ve heard he should direct EVERY super hero movie that gets produced. Imagine a gritty realistic version of Flash?? Strip it down, give Wally a pair of chucks and there you have it A PERFECT SUPER HERO MOVIE.

      • So does that make nolen a good whatever (writer, director, producer) or a yes man OR a guy that listens to know one, dose what he likes and if others don’t like it tough shiz. I’m a Brit and personally i can’t stick the bloke, made one or 2 good movies but like most (del toro, jackson or even Tarantino(i still say he’s got a comic book movie in him)) they don’t get it right 100 percent so why keep saying nolen every time anythings happening “oh, this traffic needs directing down the left lane” “i’ll phone nolen” that’s what its coming to. hope peeps understand this rant as i’m to ill to be explaining it all to any trolls

    • Here’s an idea: Let’s have Nolan direct EVERY movie.

      • You sir are a genius! Have a bazillion monies! In fact let’s all have a bazillion monies! (I know your kidding around BTW)

  22. the last 3 movies have been pure eye candies and this one will be no different, so keep your brains at home and enjoy……

  23. Hope this one is better than afterlife pt 4

  24. I have watched this trailer for the 3rd time and I am super excited for it.
