It's an exciting time for Resident Evil fans, with two major video games coming out, another rumored to be announced this week, and of course, the franchise's fifth film, Resident Evil: Retribution debuting in September.

2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife introduced 3D into the franchise and gave the series its largest box office haul yet, kick-starting a fifth installment into production for Paul W.S. Anderson to helm once again with his wife Milla Jovovich returning to play Alice on her quest to eradicate the Umbrella Corporation. The next movie is also coming in 3D and its first teaser trailer is now out.

After living off of only set photos and casting announcements these last few months, Sony Screen Gems has finally unveiled the first official Resident Evil: Retribution trailer and it's something that fans of the series will be pleased with... or perhaps not due to how it's presented. Take a look for yourself and take note of how odd the intro is:

Innovative marketing? Or something that doesn't belong? The short teaser is introduced by 20+ seconds of ads for Sony mobile products. As for the actual footage of the film - played to the tune of the "Recognizer" track from TRON: Legacy - not much is shown in the teaser but there are loads of very evident CG shots and plenty of action in line with what fans should expect from the series.

The official Resident Evil Twitter account also shared the following banner:

Resident Evil Retribution Alice Banner

From the official plot synopsis and cast, Resident Evil: Retribution is on track to offer the greatest fan service for those looking for the films to more closely relate to the story of the Capcom video games. From what we can piece together, the film runs full circle, tying into the original Resident Evil movie (and the rest of the series) and at the same time, introduces more key characters from the games, all of which will help explain the origin of the villains encountered both Afterlife and Retribution.

The official synopsis:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

While Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller - who played prominent roles in 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife - will not return (K-Mart, Chris & Claire Redfield are abducted by Umbrella), Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe and Shawn Roberts will for their respective roles, with Guillory stepping up as the film's primary villain. Retribution will see other familiar faces for fans of the series as well, including Jason Isaacs, Michelle Rodriguez and Colin Salmon from the original Resident Evil and Oded Fehr who played a key role in Extinction and Apocalypse.

This fifth installment in the popular series also will finally introduce fan-favorite franchise characters from the games including Leon Kennedy (Johann Urb) and Barry Burton (Kevin Durand).  Milla Jovovich of course, returns as the series star, playing Alice.

Resident Evil: Retribution hits theaters September 14, 2012 in 3D.
