‘Resident Evil 5′ Trailer: 3D Action, Zombies, & the Truth About Alice

Published 3 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 10:00 pm,

Sony started off its marketing for the fifth installment in the Resident Evil live-action franchise, sub-titled Retribution (a.k.a. Re5ident Evil: Retribution), with a teaser trailer that pulled double-duty as a light-hearted satire of the company’s advertising for its electronic devices – while still serving as a (shameless?) product plug.

Today, however, we can offer a traditional theatrical promo for the new RE flick, which features the debut of fan-favorite characters from the original video game series, like Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) and Leon Scott Kennedy (Johann Urb). Established RE movie universe players Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez) and Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr) will also be making appearances (among others).

Retribution once again picks up with Alice, as played by iconic action starlet Milla Jovovich (who’s also the wife of RE series writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson, by no coincidence). This new chapter follows Alice as she uncovers dark secrets about her past by exploring the Umbrella Corporation’s “most clandestine operations facility.” Those discoveries eventually propel our heroine on a quest that takes her around the globe, spanning locations such as Tokyo, Moscow, and New York. Alice’s efforts culminate with a game-changing revelation, which forces her to reconsider everything she believed to be true about the zombie virus outbreak that decimated humanity (or so the official Retribution synopsis promises).

Milla Jovovich returns as Alice in 'Resident Evil: Retribution'

The big twists and turns in Retribution presumably spawn from Alice’s discovery that her cheesy happy memories of a life before the zombocalypse are all part of an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by Umbrella, including the sunglass-wearing villain Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts). For this writer, it’s kind of difficult to gauge how exactly all these plot elements are being setup to come together – since, following a rapid-fire tease of Alice’s faux past and the storyline for Retribution, the trailer shifts into action overdrive. Plot suddenly becomes a secondary concern to the film’s big selling points: CGI monsters, futuristic flying vehicles, explosive set pieces, and shots that not-so-subtly remind viewers this movie was filmed in 3D.

In other words: Retribution looks to feel like a Paul W.S. Anderson production, in every meaning of the term (good and bad). Chances are, those reading this article already know whether or not they plan to check this flick out on the big screen, and wade even further into the murky mythology of the live-action RE movie universe. If nothing else, there’s always fun to be had watching Jovovich pull off crazy stunts and kill zombified creatures in slow-motion… right?

Resident Evil: Retribution opens in U.S. theaters (2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) on September 14th, 2012.

  1. looks sick can’t wait.

  2. Is this a reboot? Didn’t most those characters die in previous films?

    • It’s not a reboot. Originally, most of the returning characters (who previously died, or were presumed dead) were expected to show up again via flashback – though, going by the trailer, that might not be the case after all.

      • This looks like a reboot of sorts. My perception from the trailer is that everything was a dream up until now.

      • remember in extinction they are cloning alice? well i think that is the case in retribution and umbrella is cloning the s.t.a.r.s members to work for them, this however is only a guess.

  3. Rain, Carlos, and One are *spoiler alert* clones

  4. I love that it seems that the film will literally start immediately where the last one left off.

  5. T-Virus zombies don’t have those things that come out of their mouths. That’s a variant of the Las Plagas parasite from Resident Evil 4(the video game.) In RE5(the game) the Majini are mind-controlled by the parasites and have those come out of their mouths when they attack. Las Plagas doesn’t create undead, rotten zombies, and Las Plagas doesn’t come from zombies. They really messed this one up.

  6. ^Remember when you just went to a movie like this to have fun for 2 hours instead of dissecting every part of it as if it’s that serious?

    • I still do! I ignore all the “purists.” You want the games play the games this is what happens when they Didnt save the day!

    • THANK YOU!! Basic principle, if there were one, THIS IS IT!

  7. I wonder just how long this movie will be, adjusting for the expectedly excessive amounts of slo-mo…the last one was probably 45 minutes tops.

    • haha

  8. Just wetting myself.

    • …not really any better

  9. Didn’t the third one establish the entire world as a desert wasteland? I’m confused.

  10. I think it was part 1 that I watched on cable once but to be honest I’m not sure?
But I haven’t really paid much attention to the series.
Is it worth checking them all out or is it a if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all type of thing?

  11. Can’t wait for the reboot. Back when the 1st came out, I was kind of hoping that they would get it right…. I mean the basics were there. The 2nd one happened…it got sillier… then, the 3rd came and I stopped watching it on the big screen. Resident Evil, imho, used to be about subtle horror (mansion), mutations, zombification and the scheming of Umbrella and how they tried to keep it secret…there is such a huge amount of background story in this franchise and they can’t come up with anything better than this “dumb-cheap-mindless-actionflick”. There is nothing scary or any fighting for survival in Resident Evil anymore, instead we have superpowered heroines. Am I getting to old for this?

    • You & me both Bob, I find these movies silly at best.

      • Why do u guys complain. I mean Anderson was the only one who decided to do it u knw why? CUZ NO ONE ELSE GAVE A f***:( So ur preacious RE wasnt doing well to begin with

  12. Looks better than the other ones. Getting pretty tired of blades being thrown in slow motion at the screen though…its like resident evil and underworld are competing for a record or something

  13. Looks better then afterlife cant wait!!

  14. These movies just get more ridiculous as they go on, the 3rd one was pretty decent until they revealed that Alice had been cloned a million times! Seriously, what’s the point? It doesn’t make sense, we could be following the story of any one of those clones from now on!

Part 4 was even more pointless and ended like a pilot for a tv show, tune in next week to see which band of survivors Alice finds and then leads to their deaths!

  15. I am so Pumped Up right now!!!!! LOL :)

  16. Afterlife was awesome cause it had alot of Resident Evil 5 game moments and I loved it on the ps3. I don’t know why rain and carlos is back and claire and chris isnt

  17. Wonder if Leon will yell ADA!!!!!!!

  18. My name is Alice.. and I’m going to kick butt…. again..

  19. let see formula of a Paul W.S. Anderson resident evil film
step one narration by the mary sue Alice and show more bull crap features of what the T-Virus can do.
step two canon characters are useless at guns.
step three Alice kicks zombie ass with unconventional ammo.
    step four ?
    step five cliff hanger ending
    final step profit
this film franchise is like the G-Virus it gets worse every time it gets put down by critics

    • All of the returning umbrella characters from the previous films are CCCCCCLLLLOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

  20. So they are going for the Dallas shower scene trick, it was all a dream?

That’s the gayest thing I’ve ever heard!

    • reading your first sentence, I was all ready to “LOL” with you.

then you had to go and ruin it all with your second sentence.

  21. I will wait for a Remake that is more story driven character based like the first game till then i’ll be watching things like prometheus, snow white and the huntsman, spiderman, the dark knight rises and thats about it for this summer.

  22. The games are going the same route as the movies, survival horror is dead. The games storyline is still better than the movies though.

    • I mean, it IS a Japanese video game. I’m surprised it took them 6 installments to make the President of The United States a zombie.

But don’t write it off yet, the trailer shows some good old fashion zombie killing in dark city streets with Leon. It looks a Hell of a lot better than 5.

  23. First trailer I actually enjoyed from the RE series.

  24. hahaha what a joke, this PoS has ever cliché possible for an action movie besides the decent one liners and action stars 😛

i honestly dont know how and why retards can watch these movies and call them good, the last one didn’t even have a consistent or strong narrative and had the worst cast (wentwroth is not redfield no matter what universe you’re from).

and wtf is up with wesker, didn’t he get half his head literally blown up at the end of the last res movie or what that ‘all a dream’ as well. i really hope this is the last entry into the awful adaptation of a now awful game franchise.

    • f*** off u just sit here bitching get a life >:P

    • F*ck off u just sit here *****ing get a life >:P

  25. They kind of swiped the tagline from ‘9’ in this trailer. That kind of annoyed me a bit. I don’t know if that bothered anyone else it’s just something I noticed.

  26. Just so people will know, all of the returning characters who died in the previous movies were actually clones…which gives an excuse for them to show up in this film with 2 versions of themselves.

  27. Am I the only one who absolutely enjoyed the first one? The Umbrella conspiracies, the action, etc. The story was good and as I watched them each had moments of greatness as well as tons of cheesy over the top, mindless action. After the second one it had lost all of it’s appeal and I was just watching them for the action scenes. No more plot or cool, deep storylines to uncover. Just ridiculousness. I really wanted to like this series. Seriously the first RE is one of my favorite zombie flicks. What in the world happened..
