We all know that Hollywood likes remakes. They’ll pretty much remake anything – old movies, new movies foreign movies, good movies, bad movies and even great movies. Heck, these days they’re even remaking remakes! If there’s brand recognition or somebody willing to stump up the cash then there is a remake in the cards.
John Landis, the once great director of An American Werewolf in London has stated that Hollywood wants to remake his iconic horror movie from 1981, but there is only thing that is stopping them.
Landis owns the rights.
But how long can the former directing master hold out before they make him an offer he can’t refuse?
I’m going to hazard a guess and say not very long.

Landis said at the Horror Hound festival that talks have been ongoing for a few years. What’s important here is – he is talking.
It is also very important to note that this is also the man who directed The Blues Brothers 2000, so making a film for the money is nothing new to him.
We also have to be aware that a belated, and very bad sequel was released in 1997 – An American Werewold in Paris – that featured terrible special effects. Actually strike that – they were just effects. There was nothing special about them.
It’s a shame, the original “American Werewolf ” is a masterpiece of it’s genre, and I don’t think that it can be bettered. If you are a regular reader at Screen Rant you should know that I like my Wolfman movies, so you can tell that this is close to my heart.
This remake craze must end. Soon – somebody is going to get hurt.
John – if you’re reading this – don’t sell the rights. Keep them. For us – the fans.
Remember we were there for The Stupids.
If there is more (bad) news, we will let you know.

AWIL is still one of the greatest werewolf movies ever made ( EVER ).
I freely admit that todays FX are superior but , I think , other than that you just can’t improve on this film.
I’m always happy to give a new werewolf flick a shot , so I’d be quite happy to be wrong about this.
Ok here’s the deal,,,,, its time for Screen Rant to have a weekly colume called the “Remake of the week”.
I have no other comments on remaking a film that dosnt warrent a remake.
Very frustrated with this remake crazyness
I do believe Niall may have floated that idea…
Vic
Niall rules!
Seriously its time, and I think it would be great to discuss that “remake of the week” and have readers come up with their ideas on what needs to be brought in to make it right or how lame it is to even try…
There has been a remake idea or story every single week for like the last 3 months.
Capricorn One, Escape from NY and now this AWIL to name 3.
remake of the week is a terrific idea , lets do that and then lets re-do it.
but seriously , I think remake of the week is a sweet idea ( count me in )
I think it’s important to recall Vic’s “remake and sequel” rules from awhile back.
One cannot dismiss outright that a sequel shouldn’t be made in a sweeping fashion.
Having seen the original, I must say that the ending always seemed too abrupt, with so much seemingly underdeveloped or unresolved. Contrary to many, I think the story can be improved to be more well-rounded and satisfying. I think perhaps the revolutionary SFX (at the time) used in the film may tend to block out the film’s flaws in the minds of the general consensus.
That’s just my opinion, though.
Man, even reading about a possible remake of American Werewolf in London is painful.
They’re already screwing around with my Wolfman. Can’t they ever leave well enough alone?
Mac- In answer to your question (”They’re already screwing around with my Wolfman. Can’t they ever leave well enough alone?”)?
The answer is “No”….
