Update April 11, 2007: Click here for the first official look at the actual Mark I Iron Man armor from the movie.
For those of you that hated the rejected designs down below, here are some Granov-inspired 3D renders that the artist did as well. I actually liked the versions down below (except for the helmet) but these right here totally rock IMHO and if the producers don’t consider bringing this guy on board I think they’re nuts.
FYI, here are some Iron Man armor concepts that did not make the cut for the upcoming movie. Personally I think these are fantastic, straddling a line between realism and the comic book world that would really work with the James Bond/Tom Clancy vibe that director Jon Favreau is going for.

These were designed/rendered by Brandon Perlow who has done TV and movie computer effects work. Brandon met with visual effects supervisor John Nelson who said that although he liked the design and that in some cases it paralleled what they were doing, it did not fit in with their overall direction. They’re wanting to go in more of an Adi Granov design direction. It will be interesting to see how the final concept measures up to these.

I’m pretty sure that the final version is going to be MUCH closer to the top two than to the bottom images.

Hmmm…I find it kind of doubtful he had a meeting with John Nelson. Maybe at a Comicon type event where he shoved some image in Nelson’s face and I guess he could then say Nelson rejected them. Based on what I saw at his website he’s not a level where Nelson would meet with him. I’d love to find out when and where this “meeting” took place and then ask John where he was.
Ashes,
He did in fact have a meeting. He actually met Favreau FIRST. Here is his response to my inquiry concerning your comment:
“When I saw Favreau at the ‘Con, I showed him the renderings on my laptop. He gave me a quick look and said he thought they were impressive, but a different direction than he was going. He gave me the number of the VFX supervisor John Nelson, as he didnt want to deal with CG issues. I called John Nelson, mentioned what I have, and told him my experience as a professional CG artist. Since I have been at Digital Domain, Jim Henson Creature Shop and Disney, he was willing to give me some time to see my stuff. But it wasnt going to be a official meeting (as with Favreau and other production staff) and he was curious to what I had. He and his VFX producer saw my stuff on my laptop , and he liked what he saw. He wanted me to continue for a week , but he was going to talk to the Legal Dept about bringing me in as I wasnt solicited by Marvel.”
“Later in the day the VFX producer called me up telling me as I am not solicited by marvel, they cant use me. Im guessing its either they call you, and you dont call them, or someone there didnt like me.”
So there ya go.

First of all, my statement will be biased. I’m a comic freak( though not of the breed who spend hours lounging on their fat asses, fantasizing about flying around in skin tight leotards; I use my fat ass for other things), who has from the beggining loved Iron Man and most subsequent versions of him. So, I’d personally attempt to keep the movie as true to the comics as possible (props to Pete Jackson for doing that with LOTR).
Second, realize that Iron Man is a character in a fictional magazine, so normal engineering and physical limitations have no bearing( I assume that most of the people on here know this, so I won’t elaborate).
Now, down to business.
The pictures cited above are the most disgusting, atrocious, projectal vomit inducing renderings of an Iron Man prototype, that I have ever seen.
Especially the ones on the bottom.
I’d have to agree with “Duncan”, in that the look should be more steely. Though, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it should be the walking monstrocity that it was in the early 60’s.
A little closer to War Machine than traditional Iron Man.
Clean, straight lines, greys, blacks and silvers, minimal flashiness.
Some is warranted.
How else will they sell merchandise?
Anyway, the point is, Iron Man shouldn’t be a demon-smashing manga toon. But even that doesn’t really matter.
Old Shell-Head will soldier on even if his movie is an unrealistic flop.
Max
what a jackass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why dont you go back to Canada ehhhh?!?!!? leave these nice people alone>:( yeah im talking to you martini:evil:
word.
Hey Max,
Don’t hold back… tell us how you REALLY feel.
That was pretty harsh criticism from a self-admitted fat comic freak, don’t you think?
Brandon is a friend of mine and (with the exception of the helmet, which I don’t like) I think he did a heck of a job thinking outside the box and trying to come up with a more real world tech version of the armor.
So until you produce some kick-ass photorealistic CGI Iron Man renderings, perhaps you could tone down the rhetoric, eh?
Vic
hello, I’m currently working for a studio doing pre-production for ironman, and I’ve been working with the computer model of the armor. While I can’t show or discuss much, I can assure you that you don’t need to be worried about the look and your fears of some far off style isn’t going to happen.
I have it on good authority that the armor design will be VERY close to the version in the poster that was released for the film.
Vic
Aaaah, you misunderstood my comment.
I was not criticizing his work. On the contrary, I could never hope to produce anything even approaching that calibur.
What I was disgusted with was the concept. The design.
So, if I have offended, I apologize.
But please, don’t misconstrue.
No worries. It’s good of you to come back and clarify and it’s appreciated.
Best regards,
Vic
No problem man.
HEY, YOU GUYS EVER HEAR ” NO SCHOOL LIKE THE OLD SCHOOL” ? WHAT’S WRONG WITH STARTING OUT WITH AN EARLY DESIGN AND MOVING ON FROM THERE ? REMEMBER THE ARMOR WAS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING . I HOPE THE MOVIE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR A SEQUEL
I like that new armor design quite a bit. It’s practical, looks like it would offer the fluidity needed to move and fight with, and from a design standpoint, attractive. Except for the helmet. I really like the muted colors, no one doing any fighting would color their armor the bright red and gold it is now. Some issues I do see are the vulnerabilities on vital areas of his torso, but those would have been worked out over the design process.
As a concept designer, I know this is one of the hardest things to do: re-imagine a character that has a huge fan base, and make it work for film. Props to him for having the balls to walk up to the director and say, “hey, look at my stuff, you might like it.”
Now lets hope they actually build the suit and stay away from a totally CG character.
The 70’s-80’s style should be followed closely. This is the identifiable Iron Man. He changed little in this era. Since then, there have been 101+ changes in the armor. Why?Because an artist feels it needs an “update”. After a few months of complaints, it gets changed again.
The only time something needs to be made “fresh” is when it is stale. Not the case with Iron Man.
Iron Mans early versions were pretty futuristic even by todays standards. Any retooling will just repeat the “updated” Green Goblin movie version fiasco. Not every suit needs the transformers look. Todays CG would make the gold form fitting sleeves and leggings look awesome.
THIS is the REAL Iron Man http://www.diamondgalleries.com/product_images/1/4073/001_big.jpg
Skully, I hear ya. That’s the Shellhead I grew up with, but the problem is that today’s audience is more (hack, cough) sophisticated and setting that level of ultra-high tech in today’s time just wouldn’t come across as “realistic”.
Sure, we’re using the terms superpowered characters an “realism” in the same sentence, but to suspend disbelief there have to be compromises made. Now if Iron Man was based in the 24th century, sure. But for now it’s going to have to look a bit more feasible.
I’ve seen some concept designs and if they go with what I’ve seen I think it’ll be a decent compromise.
Vic
I understand the need to accomodate a newer audiance… but lets not forget the FAILURES Marvel has had in the past when veering TOO far from what the fanbase expects to see. When Spiderman was in production, the black suit was still being used. Sticking with the old tried and true, made it look more like the comic (with exception of Green Goblin). Let’s not forget it’s a COMIC BOOK movie. It should not be an action flick “based on” a comic book. Anybody remember the old made-for-tv movies Marvel used to make? Spiderman had goggles? built into his mask? Captain America had a motorcycle, and helmet? And Doctor Strange…..don’t get me started LOL.
I hope the movie is fairly faithful to the original story. The Hulk had awsesome CG, nailing Hulk, but the story was so bad, it alienated a lot of people who grew up with the comic and knew the story.
I think the movie will be faithful to the CONCEPT of the original story, but actually quite different since they’re doing it present-day. I think that the “Extremis” story arc by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov will be a big influence when it comes to look of the armor and origin.
Vic
Just wanted to say something quick. I think the concepts look good for being just that, concepts. Im sure the armor in the movie will be much closer to the style of armor he currently wears in the comic. In doing that they will connect the two properties rather than seperating them. And, to all the haters…really, do you seriously think that Robert Downey Jr’s acting ability will allow this movie to flop? Come now children…
de pelos
Maybe, Maybe not. Who knows? the concepts are ok, but I hope they go with the original(not the full gold one). that would make alot of iron man fans happy.
I dissagree ender. i think thay shood go with the newer consepts. did you see the new poster adds they have up in gregs review on yahoo?
Yes, I did see it, actually. Maybe you’re right.
somthing worth thinking about, anyway.
Well they’ll be starting with a “clunkier” version and then go to a more advanced one (matching the poster pretty closely) by the end of the film.
Vic
Some one completely unfamiliar with Ironman should be able to look at that armor and go, “THAT IS BAD ASS! I WANT THAT!!!”
None of the looks above say that to me.
Adi Granov’s art for the first 5 issues of the current Ironman series is a cool reference. These examples above are too clunky and not ‘exciting’ looking.
Guys these designs are not terrible. I agree they can be better, but making him look Iron like the original costume is redicilous. The new costume they are using in the Civil War comics are great it is lean, form fitting, and bad ass. So why are you all judging what the fil will be from the REJECTED armor?
Great job !
i finally got to see ironmans red and gold modern armor it total rocks it looks exactly like the andi granov iron man covers hopefully if ironman is a success i would like to see the next movie villians to be crimson dynamo and titanium man and maybe the warmachine armor.
If it’s successful and we get a sequel I’ve read that we will indeed get to see the War Machine armor.
Vic
I can’t see this movie going anywhere.
Reminds me of a cross between Spawn and Batman 3.
It’ll be a “comic book movie” alright. In the worse sense of the word.
It’s almost like they took the DareDevil approach.
“Lets take some stars people recognize, a marginally inspired hero who isn’t iconic in any way, and add big explosions… it’ll be a hit!”
no… no it won’t.
Sadly, this movie is destined to join the ranks of Spawn and Hellboy.
A favorite among it’s core fan base, but zero power to reach across movie goer lines to attract outsiders looking for a good movie to watch on a friday night.
Thomas,
You could turn out to be right, but I hope not. I hope you come back to comment after the movie has been released.
Personally I think you’re wrong.
Vic
