I’m not sure what makes this story so comical - the fact the Hollywood has jumped on the remake gravy train once again, or is it the fact that Robert Rodriguez has once again hired his girlfriend Rose McGowan to star in yet another one of his projects?
It’s a tough question to answer, but for the sake of argument I’ll say that I can’t believe that Red Sonja is going to be remade.
Nu Image/Millennium Films, the company behind the recently annnounced (and forever in development) Conan remake have stated that they are producing a film version of Robert E. Howard’s second most famous character that will be “presented” by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski.

The movie, based on the 1985 Richard Fleischer film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen as the titular (easy, boys - look that word up) red-haired heroine is yet another project by Nu Image/Millennium to use iconic and pre-existing characters - see Conan, The Three Musketeers and Rambo.
Is there really an audience for this film - considering that the big draw for the original film was a certain Mr Schwarzenegger?
Probably.
Let’s be brutally honest - you could probably make this movie on a cheap budget - and I’d hazard a guess that McGowan doesn’t get paid that much (I know, a lot more than you and me - but you know what I’m getting at).
Nu Image/ Millennium Films’ head honcho said this:
“This is an amazing property and film for our company. Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier.”
Oh, it should be noted that director Aarniokoski worked as assistant director on several of Rodriguez films and he also helmed the terrible Highlander: Endgame.
I see this thing going straight to DVD, and while I could be wrong, the “Robert Rodriguez Presents:” title feels like it belongs on a DVD box.
Locations are being scouted in Michigan (?!) and other areas across the United States, with filming scheduled to begin in October.
With a bit of luck this could be a minor diversion, but what about Conan ? Surely we should have heard more news about that - considering that it has been on the boil longer than Rodriguez has been making films.
Possibly, just possibly there could be a bit of Conan cross-over here - like what Marvel are doing at the minute. The studio might also be testing the waters, to see if there is an audience for this sort of film, before they decide to make the mega-budgeted Conan.

Tecnically this is not a remake, its a new adaptation, The Red Sonja character has been around much longer than the Nilsen poorly adapted movie and is quite popular, Both RR and McGowen have said they havent seen that film nor plan to so this flick can hardly be called a remake.
I do agree its hilarious how much RR’s penis has been working as his casting agent latley tho. The Barbarella remake suposdley fell throu because he was adamant on casting rose in it….
Maybe so, but there’s no guarantee of money in originality. Hollywood seems to believe there is guaranteed money in remakes, though.
Yeah, this is pretty ridiculous. I don’t think it’s going anywhere, though. And if it does, we can all safely ignore it.
My sister and my niece were into “Xena,” so you never know. I think I’ll ask them what they think next time I see them. Do you think it would go for a PG-13 rating or harder?
Yeah a build-up to “Conan,” that sounds plausable.

Anyway, I haven’t seen the movie, which, by all accounts looks pretty terrible, but Red Sonja the comic is actually pretty good and not at all focused on T&A. And a crossover with Conan seems pretty unlikely, seeing as the Conan is owned by a seperate copany from Red Sonja and the movie is being made from a different company.
Oh really, Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct this and the fact that Rose McGowan was to play the lead was announced a year ago?

No, I was just referring to the fact that a remake was being made. It was announced on the Dynamite Entertainment (the company that publishes the Red Sonja comic book series) and they had announced that they had an actress (I believe they had said she was attractive or something along those lines) but they coulnd’t announce who it was just yet.

BTW, having read the post you linked to and the history of posts by this “Luke” character, I wouldn’t call that any sort of serious announcement at all. That was smoke and mirrors, no actress named, no director, nothing. Hardly qualifies as a year old version of this post, bro.

Oh, sure, and I wouldn’t report on it, either, as it’d be kinda hard to verify. I just thought the main point of this Screen Rant article was the remake, not the director/actor, and the remake was at least known about around ten months ago.
I’m pretty sure Luke is eplyed by Dynamite in some capacity or another.

Update for ya: The word is that Rodriguez and McGowan have split up, so we may end up with a different Red Sonja.
