‘RED’ Sequel In The Works

Retirees generally spend their days performing casual tasks, taking up new hobbies, finally tackling that novel they’ve been itching to write for years – unless, of course, you’re one of the former black-ops agents in RED and your days involve a bit more gunfire, bone-cracking combat, and explosions than normal.

RED was a popular draw when it hit theaters last fall and now Summit Entertainment has hired the film’s screenwriters, Jon and Erich Hoeber, for another round with a pack of extremely dangerous senior citizens (just don’t use that term in front of John Malkovich)

Collider has the scoop on a sequel to RED, which grossed an unexpectedly large $164 million worldwide in theaters and managed to snag a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) to boot. More important to casual moviegoers than financial success or critical prestige is that RED is a blast to watch and demonstrated that not only does Bruce Willis still have the chops to be convincing as a guns-blazing rouge, but genteel thespians like Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren can make for impressive badasses onscreen as well.

The Hoebers made a name for themselves with their DC Comics graphic novel adaptation and will continue to do so with their script for the upcoming Sam Worthington thriller Man On A Ledge, as well as the script for Peter Berg’s Battleship. The duo being hired by Summit to pen a RED followup is not equivalent to a sequel being given the greenlight, though it does imply that the studio is intrigued by the possibility of a franchise here – either that or, like everyone else, the head execs just want an excuse to see Mirren wielding a heavy load of firepower again.

RED was a bit of a sleeper hit that generated good word of mouth and convinced younger moviegoers that a flick starring four individuals whose combined age is over two centuries old could make for a rambunctious and wild action-thriller with some clever comedy to boot. Those who caught the trailers and TV previews for the film knew they were in for a fun ride, but were by and large surprised by just how entertaining the pic turned out to be.

Director Robert Schwentke earned props for crafting kinetic action sequences that were engaging – and did not employ the over-used shaky cam aesthetic – and allowing pros like Willis, Freeman, Malkovich, and Mirren to naturally play off one another for both dramatic and comedic effect. Lightning is a tricky thing to bottle when it comes in the form of a refreshingly enjoyable popcorn flick, but it’s possible that a RED sequel could do just that.

Willis has both Die Hard 5 and The Expendables 2 on his to-do list, so he’s not quitting the action game anytime soon. Malkovich and Mirren also seemed to enjoy themselves in RED and could be up for a second venture as well – besides, handling deadly artillery must be a particularly interesting change of pace for the Oscar-winning star of The Queen.

  1. sweeet loved the movie sequel will be good

  2. Great Movie would love a well written sequel

  3. Helen mirren was amazing hope theres a sequel!

    • Edit*

a sequel thats TOPS the first one (unlikely but possible) :)

  4. Loved this movie…hopeful for a second one that lives up to its predecessor…

  5. Loved this movie. Can’t wait to own it. A sequel could be a blast. I’m in.

  6. We all knew Willis would be great but Mirren and Malkovich were the surprise hits from the movie, especially Malkovich. Another SR article said it best: When you hear the phrase, “Old man my a**!”, you know what movie that was from. I am all in for another go. Unfortunately, we all know who will not be returning.

  7. I loved RED. All the actors were wonderful. It was a very fun movie. I’m glad they are making a sequel.

These older actors can not only keep up with the younger actors, but show them how a real action movie is done right.

Bruce Willis still has it as an action star. I’m not surprised to see a Die Hard 5, the fourth sequel was as great as the previous ones.

Morgan Freedman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren are all legends. Although, Mirren isn’t known for action, she did great.

    RED 2 it is then.

  8. They should do a prequel.

  9. The scene with Willis walking out of a spinning cop car, taking out his gun and shooting the crap out of that SUV was one of the best, albeit short, action sequences I’ve seen recently. It was really well done.

One complaint about RED, wasn’t long enough. The relationship between Willis and WEEDS actress (sorry don’t know her character’s name) blossomed very abruptly…one moment they’re fighting about her getting kidnapped next they’re holding hands. I wish they developed it more and the movie was longer.

Anyway, the sequel is one of my most anticipated films now, as long as they bring back the original cast/crew and maybe some other old and cool actors

    • I dont think it was all that fast really, I got the impression from the begining – and comments later about the check from both – that they liked talking to each other.
She, naturally, had sudden reservations when he showed up in her home, having packed her bags and talking crazy.
If you watch I think the swing back from distrust and bickering happens once she realizes he ISN’T some loon, that he is really ex-CIA and they REALLY are trying to kill, or harm possibly in her case, them both.
That she adored some spy romance, and plainly sees their relationship reflexed in it also helps and also gives the writers an out if the actress has other commitments (the blush on the rose wearing off with time and reality) though I hope they DO get her again, there not that many actors or actresses who could share the screen with that foursome without coming out the worse for it, yet she holds her ground in both one on one talks and group interaction.

  10. Now that I think about it, RED was everything I wanted from Expandables (and I didn’t get bc Expandables was horrible).

An ensemble cast with amazing action and great story.

  11. The movie was not a masterpiece but, but boy was it entertaining. I would love to see Judi Dench as a villain bazooka wielding villain.

  12. They should just smash Red 2 and Expendables 2 into the same movie

  13. I loved RED and I’m reallly excited that there working on a sequel.
I really liked John Malkovich’s character and would love to see all of the characters (that lived) in the sequel.
I think it would be a great trilogy franchise!

  14. Awesome, really liked Red. :-)

  15. Awesome news! I just caught this at a local “dollar theater” a couple weeks ago. It would have been worth full price. Totally fun. Everyone was awesome in it. Casting was full of surprises. I haven’t seen Richard Dreyfuss in something cool in forever. Ernest Borgnine! Can’t wait for Malcovich to take out the Pig again.

  16. “… either that or, like everyone else, the head execs just want an excuse to see Mirren wielding a heavy load of firepower again.”

Great comment and couldn’t be more true! Helen Mirren is awesome!

  17. Loved this movie!! I would love to see a sequel to this!!

  19. My whole family, young and old, loved the movie Red. The characters just went so well together. The cast was excellent in their roles. I have spoken with many people about how they liked Red and everyone has raved how they loved the movie. Looking forward to a sequel!
