Helen Mirren isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind when someone thinks “Female Action Star.” The, somewhat counter-intuitive, casting choice is part of what makes Red an intriguing film.

Today, we’ve got a new clip featuring Mirren extolling the virtues of retired life – and kicking butt.

Director Robert Schwentke, himself, posed the question: “Who wouldn’t want to see Helen Mirren with a sniper rifle?” Summit Entertainment hopes that the answer to the question is “no one.”

In the clip Helen Mirren (Victoria) attempts to convince Bruce Willis (Frank Moses) about the joys of “transitioning” into civilian life. Her argument in favor of the inherent pleasure of gardening, loses some of its legitimacy by the end of the scene.

Take a look at the new clip from Red below:

Red (based on the graphic novel by Warren Ellis) is the story of several “retired, extremely dangerous,” (aka Red) CIA agents who have been framed by “the agency.” The “hunters” have become the “hunted” and must now band together to fight for survival.

The plot-line begs somewhat of a comparison to The A-Team, and the casting of “well-established” actors creates a slight parallel to The Expendables. Both The A-Team and The Expendables were critical “splats” on Rotten Tomatoes – though, they were both commercial successes. Red hopes to diverge from that trend with both critical and box office glory.

From what I’ve seen, Red looks like it has the potential to be a smart, fun, and enjoyable comedy-action film. Red is based on compelling source material and offers a veritable smorgasbord of talent and interesting casting choices. The cast includes; Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox, and Mary Louise-Parker.

I for one would love to see Helen Mirren with a sniper rifle.

Red will be released on October 15th.
