Red Carpet Premiere for ‘Public Enemies’

Thursday, June 18, Johnny Depp and Co. walked the red carpet for Chicago’s premiere of Public Enemies. The notorious bank robber, John Dillinger, was shot less than 5 miles away at the Lincoln Park theater–nearly 75 years ago.

The action-er was filmed last year at locations Dillinger once frequented (including the Biograph Theater on Lincoln Avenue), providing the upcoming blockbuster a taste of the authentic. Although Wrigley Field won’t be appearing on screen, Depp also attended a Cubs game and signed autographs for fans after speaking with the media.

Christian Bale, who shot Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in Chicago, had this to say of the local legend:

Dillinger was a charismatic man. He was being cheered for back then and I’m sure it will happen again now with all the fat cat factors everyone is dealing with nowadays.

Depp, who was the last to arrive, joined fellow stars Bale, Marion Cotillard, director Michael Mann (a Chicago-native), and a crowd of about 600 fans. [Gallery of the premiere available at The Chicago Tribune.]

    You have misidentified the man walking with Johnny Depp in the last photo in your article. You wrote "Screaming fans greet Johnny and director Michael Mann."

    The gentleman in the photo with Johnny is his longt-time Director of Security, Jerry Judge.

    This film looks amazing!

    Movies I am looking forward to the most after the disappointment of Wolverine and Salvation:

    Transformers II -- If it cuts out the immaturity and attempts at cuteness the first one had and substitutes it with an intelligible plot and robot-smashing action, I think the Transformers franchise will redeem itself, even in the eyes of the haters. I already got a group together for the IMAX premiere... Yeah!

    Public Enemies -- I hope that Bale can get some critical acclaim for his acting opposite Depp. I hope that for Mann, this is the one that gets some real Oscar-buzz. I don't know how Heat wasn't taken more seriously.

    Where the Wild Things Are -- My second favorite children’s book coming to life in a fashion that seems to give the book justice!
