Two More [REC] Sequels On The Way

Rec 3 and 4 Two More [REC] Sequels On The Way

Here’s a piece of news that will delight fans of the terrifically well-made and frantically frightening [REC];  there’s not one but TWO more sequels on the way. [REC] 2 has already been made and released in its native Spain, but has yet to hit theaters in U.S. But evidently, the franchise has a lot more fuel left in the tank.

Variety reports the news that Filmax Entertainment has officially greenlit third and fourth [REC] movies. The first two were co-directed by Paco Plaza and Juame Balaguero, but the next two will be solo films for each director.

[REC] Genesis, the third movie, will be directed by Plaza who has co-written the script with Luis Berdejo (who co-wrote the first [REC]). It will focus on the origin of the virus that plagued the first two movies. The movie is aiming to be completed by Fall 2011.

[REC] Apocalypse, the ending to the franchise, will be directed by Balaguero (after he finishes the “sociopathic doorman thriller” Sleep Tight) and is aimed to be ready for Fall 2012. Both movies are eyeing festival runs in their respective years, same as the first two [REC] movies did when they were released. There’s currently no word if the in-camera/shaky-cam technique will be used for the two sequels.

We already heard word of more [REC] installments last December when Plaza and Balageuro talked about [REC] 3 and in which direction the plot would go. At the time they said the third movie would take things out of the apartment complex we’ve been enclosed in for two movies but we knew nothing more than that. The fact that they’re breaking away from the first and second movie’s formula is a good idea, since I couldn’t really see them being able to carry the “trapped in a building with zombies” premise longer than two movies.

I really like the idea of going back to the origin of the virus, which was only hinted at in the first film and apparently gets mention in the second (I’ve yet to see [REC] 2). We only saw what becomes of people if they’re infected, which certainly provided for plenty of heart-pounding terror, but it’ll be very cool to see how and where it all began.

As far as the fourth movie goes, I can only assume we’ll have some sort of closing off of the franchise, i.e. a cure for the virus is found or at least it’s contained and destroyed (unless the world is). They already left things on a cliffhanger in the first movie, and presumably will do the same in the second and third, so I think we need a definitive ending in the fourth movie.

Even if the first [REC] had all the attributes of a potential horror franchise, I honestly never expected them to even make one sequel, much less three. I would have been worried if the sequels had gotten passed on to completely new people, but since the original filmmakers are in it for the whole ride I’m very curious to see what becomes of the franchise.

But let’s get [REC] 2 in theaters first, eh?…

What do you think of them making [REC] 3 and [REC] 4? Is that two too many or is the series deserving of so many installments?

[REC] 2 hits U.S. theaters sometime this July (the rumored date is July 9th). UK audiences can catch it on May 28th.

  1. wtf, how does that work out ?

they mention the virus and some complete BS in the 2nd one. it has nothing to do with science (the infection)

dont worry i havent ruined anything kofi :P

the rec series fell down 20 min into the 2nd movie, not going to watch anything related to that PoS ever !!!

P.S you will know why when you watch it :D

    • Part 2 is damn fun… there are many hints in the first one in where part 2 was going… great fun, just as good or even better than the first… imo…

      • fun ?! are you high or something ?
it had nothing to do with ‘infections’… at least not on a scientific level ;)
the 2nd one isnt even that graphic.
if they do make a quarantine sequel (sequel to the american remake) it should be completely different to #2.

3+4 better not have anything to do with #2 (in terms of the ‘infection’)

        • im not sure if you’re just saying this so you dont ruin the story. but i hope you are doing it for that because if you expected this to be just “some virus” then you should be slapped and forced to watch the ending to the first movie again

  2. Wonder what the US Quarantine folks are up to now?

I saw the REC sequel last month, a bit weird but if u think like a spanish then u’ll probably be ok with it.

  3. Just as jwalka said, the whole story is ruined 20 minutes into the 2nd film. The whole premise is turned on its head in one 5 minute scene and from that point on the film just descends into ludicrous stupidity.

    • What is actually ludicrous stupidity is that there are people thinking the film went downhill 20 minutes in. Did you miss the entire last scene of the movie? Did you not get that the virus is a demon possession? If you thought it was simply an infection or virus, you’re an insanely shallow thinker.

      • I meant did you miss the entire last scene of the *first* movie.

  4. Hmmmm, who was the first, guys, do you admit it? Paranormal activity or Rec??? :)) The only difference is the fact that PA doesn´t have much blood in their movies and not so good cameras because they have home security cameras. But I have to admit it, I like both movies, some people will like their Saw, some people will like Ring and I like these two horror movies :) I guess the reason is the way they make the movies with these types of cameras.

  5. Hey now c’mon, all those who think [Rec]2 reuined it…goo to hell! the 1st movie clearly stated that its not just a stuppid scientific virus! they even sayid in the 2nd part that the apparent possession (virus) spreads through biting or saliva or what ever, but they made it clear that they were just messengers!! not the actual demon..u c (for those who believe in possession or the paranormal) its not that easy for a demon or evil of a kind to make contact with the human world! thus they look for alternatives, for [Rec] (the virus)….the point is they know sumthing has broken the threshold and the only way is to find a cure!(so the finding of the blood and the anitidode thing). i love the movies, gr8 direction….and they made sure u dont mis out by adding the crazzy kids!

  6. I saw both the quarantine and rec sequel recently. I like the rec plot a bit more but they’re both great films. I guess I can understand how some less open minded people can get hung up on the “illogic” of the demon possession/infection of rec. I think I missed something in quarantine 2. How does the guy on the plane get infected?

    • He gets infected by what they thought was hamsters in the guy’s cage, cos the fat guy was trying to put it in the overhead luggage space and then got bit.
