Lucifer’s fourth season introduced an intriguing new character: Eve, the very first woman to walk the Earth. She travelled from Heaven to find her old love Lucifer,  but in the process,  she also met everyone in Lucifer’s circle. And while no one expected much, everyone who met Eve was quickly disarmed by her.

This was especially true for Mazikeen, former right-hand demon to Lucifer and current tough-as-nails bounty hunter. Maze doesn’t think much of most people. So she was as surprised as anyone when she found herself drawn to Eve. In many ways Eve and Maze are perfect for each other, but there are also several that could prevent a romance between them from working. Here, we’re exploring examples from both categories.

PERFECT: MAZE IS A DEMON AND EVE IS THE ORIGINAL SINNER

Maze and Eve from Lucifer standing together outside, both smiling.

The idea of a demon getting together with the one and only original sinner has an undeniable poetry to it. And Maze isn’t just any demon. She was Lucifer’s most loyal follower. She came to Earth with him because of that loyalty. Eve came back to Earth after millennia away for Lucifer too, although she had romance on her mind.

Yet, while Lucifer was the reason both Maze and Eve came to Los Angeles, each woman’s ideas about what she wants for herself and what she wants from him have changed drastically since they arrived. They can relate to each other because of that similar trajectory.

NOT: EVE IS OBLIVIOUS TO MAZE’S FEELINGS FOR HER

Lucifer Eve Maze

When Maze first realized she had feelings for Eve, she attempted to tell her by suggesting that Eve could move on from her relationship with Lucifer into a new romance with her. But Eve thought Maze was proposing a fake romance to make Lucifer jealous. Later, Maze made a grand gesture to declare her feelings for Eve by singing a song to her at Lucifer’s nightclub. Once again, though, instead of seeing Maze’s song as the romantic declaration it was, Eve thought Maze was suggesting that Eve should make a grand gesture to get Lucifer back.

In fact, Eve is so caught up in her plans to rekindle her romance with Lucifer, she can’t see past her own selfish needs, despite everything Maze puts out there. It's not the foundation a solid relationship is usually built on.

PERFECT: MAZE CAN GENUINELY TALK TO EVE

After being on Earth for a while, Maze realized that she wanted to make friends. But the process has never been easy for her. Maze has a very specific perspective on the world that many people have a hard time relating to. She thought Marley & Me was a comedy after all! (Demons, amiright?)

That’s never been an issue with Eve though. Eve and Maze have an easy rapport that makes Maze comfortable. As a result, Maze is able to open up to Eve in a way that’s exceptionally rare for her.

NOT: MAZE HAS NEVER BEEN IN A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP

Maze decided to look for a romantic partner after Linda told Maze she needed something to do outside of protecting her and her baby. Yet, there’s no evidence that Maze was ever in a long-term relationship before. The closest she may have come was her brief fling with Amenadiel. However, Maze’s demon ways don’t make commitment high on her list of priorities.

After several years on Earth, Maze may be seeing the possibilities of a romantic relationship in a different light. Yet, that doesn’t mean her natural instincts have changed. Relationships are challenging for anyone. Maze’s lack of romantic instinct could make a relationship even more challenging for her.

PERFECT: EVE MAKES MAZE WANT TO BE VULNERABLE

Maze is not one to betray a softer side. In fact, it’s hard to tell if she has one most of the time. Yet, Maze’s feelings for Eve make her uniquely vulnerable. Instead of running from that vulnerability, though, Maze leaned into it

Maze wouldn’t sing a song in front of a whole nightclub for just anyone. And even though Eve didn’t take the gesture the way Maze intended, it was a moment of surprising vulnerability and genuine feeling on Maze’s part. Eve's ability to bring that out in Maze shows she occupies a special place in Maze’s heart.

NOT: EVE HAS JUST COME OUT OF TWO INTENSE RELATIONSHIPS

Eve has been around since the dawn of time and yet she’s only been in two relationships. For centuries she was with Adam. In fact, she was literally made for him. And even though Adam talked incessantly about his first wife and seemed more interested in ESPN than Eve, she did everything in her power to make the marriage work.

When she finally got fed up, she headed back to Earth. But not to forge her own path. Her goals was to find Lucifer, the snake who tempted her in the Garden of Eden. While it didn’t last long, Eve’s relationship with Lucifer was intense and all-consuming. In both relationships, Eve dedicated herself completely to the man in her life. She rarely thought about herself outside of them. Coming on the heels of that, a romance with Maze would just add to Eve’s string of unhealthy, all-or-nothing entanglements.

PERFECT: EVE AND MAZE ENJOY THE SAME HEDONISTIC LIFESTYLE

Eve and Maze share a love of pleasure and debauchery that makes them uniquely compatible. Not everybody would be interested in partying nightly, but both Eve and Maze enjoy that lifestyle They’re both happy to indulge their darkest desires and would be more than willing to share those desires with each other.

One of the reasons Eve came to Earth to find Lucifer was because she believed he regularly engaged in the kind of hedonism she craved. Lucifer tried to give her what she wanted, but he’d moved on from those impulses. Maze hasn’t however, making her a better match for Eve than Lucifer.

NOT: EVE DEFINES HERSELF BY HER RELATIONSHIPS

Lucifer Morningstar and Eve in Lucifer

As the first woman, Eve’s choices in life were extremely limited. For all intents and purposes, her one and only job was to be a good wife to Adam. Because of that, Eve has defined herself by her relationships for millennia.

Eve lets the person she’s with set the terms of their relationship and she does her best to conform to what they want. As a result, Eve has never figured out who she is as an individual. By the end of Lucifer’s fourth season, Eve recognized this for the problem it is and left to find out who she is when she's on her own. Until Eve sorts out what she wants and needs as an individual, another relationship, even with Maze, probably isn’t a good idea.

PERFECT: EVE KNOWS MAZE IS A DEMON AND STILL ACCEPTS HER

Lucifer Eve

The nice thing about Eve being around since the beginning is that, unlike most humans, she knows all about celestial beings, demons, Heaven, and Hell. They were all just part of her world. So Maze’s status as a demon doesn’t bother Eve one bit.

In fact, Eve is accepting of pretty much everyone she meets. Getting kicked out of the Garden of Eden will do that. Eve knows what Maze is and what she’s done and doesn’t judge her for it. Instead, she sees all the positive things Maze has to offer.

NOT: EVE IS OPEN, MAZE IS NOT

One characteristic that makes Eve so endearing is her openness to and interest in everyone. She makes people feel understood, a rare quality in this day and age where everyone seems to be talking past each other.

Maze, however, is the opposite. She’s prickly and caustic in a way that most people find intimidating. They say opposites attract, but in a relationship, Eve could find it hard to reach Maze while Maze could be overwhelmed by Eve’s desire to communicate.
