My interpretation is that Charlie was about to say he loved Max. The fact that Charlie had to do math the second time just shows he forgot, the surprise on his face is simply a “damn, keep forgetting!” expression. Atom is clearly sentient, he doesn’t just follow comands he listens the way a real boxer would. I think Mashido designed Atom as a prototype, they mention he was a “whiz kid” but retired. The Russian chick hired him and he built Zeus to be adaptive but not sentient. I’m hoping for a sequel.
