Ready Player One, the 2011 sci-fi novel from Ernest Cline, could easily be a glimpse into a not-so-distant future as we continue to barrel through the Internet age. The story mostly takes place in a virtual world known as OASIS, which somewhat feels like the byproduct of a film like Surrogates mixed with an MMORPG. The award-winning novel picked up even more steam when Warner Bros. bought the rights and Steven Spielberg signed on to direct the film adaptation.
Set in the year 2045, this dystopian novel follows teenager Wade Watts (who most often goes by his OASIS screen name, Parzival). A poor kid living in a multi-level trailer park just outside Oklahoma City, Parzival has to beg, borrow, and steal to enjoy the ability to connect to the online community. While logged in, he’s a “gunter,” one of the people who is still searching for the easter eggs that were left behind when OASIS creator James Halliday died, which contain his hidden fortune. As Parzival navigates the virtual world in search of the grand prize, he comes across his fair share of trolls. And who better to play an Internet troll than T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley, Deadpool).
THR is reporting that Miller has been cast as i-R0k, who is the epitome of the kind of user that is likely to ruin someone’s multiplayer experience. He’s rude, demeaning, and, well, basically everything that comes to mind when one thinks “Internet troll.”
Miller’s sarcastic portrayal of Erlich Bachman in Silicon Valley is probably a good indicator of what we can expect of his character in Ready Player One, as well as the actor’s humor displayed in his role as Wade Wilson’s best friend Weasel in Deadpool. Though the role of i-R0k is not very large in the book, it would be a wasted opportunity if Miller isn’t given some room to do what he does best – that is, improv lines as he did during the production of Deadpool.
The rest of the Ready Player One cast includes Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) playing Wade Watts; Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, Ouija) as Art3mis; Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) as eccentric billionaire James Halliday; Simon Pegg (Mission Impossible and Star Trek franchises) as OASIS co-creator and Halliday’s best friend, Ogden Morrow; and Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond the Pines, Bloodline) as the main big bad, Nolan Sorrento, CEO of Innovative Online Industries. His company’s objective is to find Halliday’s easter eggs first so that he can use the fortune to monetize OASIS. Several other main characters have yet to be cast, but production is expected to begin at the end of June 2016.
Ready Player One hits theaters on March 30th, 2018.
