Ray Stevenson Cast as Villain ‘Firefly’ In ‘G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes’

Published 3 years ago by , Updated August 7th, 2013 at 8:49 am,

There’s been a whole lot of casting for the heroic roles in Paramount’s G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes over the past month, including Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye. Now the Hasbro sequel has secured an actor to portray one of Cobra Commander’s minions in the film as well.

Marvel stalwart Ray Stevenson (Thor) is the man in question, having signed on to portray the villainous Firefly in the next installment of the G.I. Joe franchise.

Heat Vision has the scoop on Stevenson signing for Cobra Strikes, which is expected to begin production next month in Louisiana. Jon Chu will be taking over directorial duties from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra helmer Stephen Sommers on the leaner and meaner followup.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Firefly is a martial arts master who’s well-renowned for his skills in the area of stealth, infiltration, and explosives. His true identity is kept a secret, even from his boss Cobra, and Firefly generally works alone on high-profile covert missions that call for his deadly talents. In the Marvel G.I. Joe comic book continuity, one of the first missions Cobra recruited Firefly for was the killing of Snake Eyes (Ray Park in Rise of Cobra/Cobra Strikes), who the Commander blamed for his brother’s death.

The role of Firefly (a.k.a. the “Faceless Master”) will be a switch from Stevenson’s turn as the voracious Volstagg in Thor, but a promising new villainous turn for the man most people consider to have portrayed the best live-action incarnation of Frank “The Punisher” Castle.

Between the few original faces returning from Rise of Cobra (including Channing Tatum as Duke and Byung Hun-lee as Storm Shadow) and the addition of franchise newcomers like RZA as the Blind Master and Elodie Yung as Jinx, most of the primary casting for Cobra Strikes has been complete at this point. However, there are still a couple of pivotal roles to fill.

Besides the part of “original” G.I. Joe, Joe Colton (who Bruce Willis is reportedly the current top choice to handle), recent reports say that the next important role that’s yet to be filled is that of Mouse – the “teen eye candy” of the film, so to speak.

Here is how What’s Playing describes the role of Mouse:

“A character from the Sgt. Savage and Screaming Eagles series, the 18-year-old Southern charmer is said to be a major player in the Paramount sequel… The idea, I believe, is to try and entice young teen girls into [seeing] the film.”

Devoted G.I. Joe fans might not be so impressed to hear that a (pardon the term) less-experienced pretty boy will be throwing down alongside older and established action stars like Johnson or Stevenson in Cobra Strikes, but that looks to be the case regardless.

Chu has assembled an overall decent collection of action movie stars and starlets to fill the ensemble for Cobra Strikes, which will also be a lower-budgeted undertaking than its predecessor. Now we’re approaching the point where G.I. Joe fans will have to wait and see if the director and his crew can in fact deliver the sort of hard-hitting military action flick they (or, rather, Chu) has been promising.

G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes is scheduled for theatrical release on August 10th, 2012.

  1. Wow there goes any hope i had for this movie.

  2. Hmmm not bad, seems they casted Stevenson bcuz of his Epic scowl since that would be all we see of his face (I assume).

  3. No Cobra Commander? No Destro? What’s the point?

    • I agree. How can you call it G.I. Joe, and not have Cobra Commander? That’s like Transformers movie w/o Megatron.

  4. @big log agreed. Who are the villains is what I want to know. All the casting news has been heavy on the joe side. Who are they facing? Firefly and Zartan?

  5. I like Stevenson. I probably wont see any more GI Joe films cuz the first one sucked, but if this one’s trailer is a little grittier or less cartoony I might give it a chance.

    • Gi Joe is a cartoon (Retard).

      • But the movie is big-budget live-action, so we expect a certain level of script, FX, and production quality.

      • Not to mention that the Comics that they came out with were ten times better and more hard core than the cartoon. That is where most of us want the studios to draw from, not the animated TV series. The comics became the core source for true die hard fans who learned the back stories to Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander.

  6. This is good news. I’m glad their adding Firefly in. Not sure if I would have cast Stevenson in this role but I think he could pull it off. The voice and attitude is going to be important because of who Firefly is.

I am waiting to see who is recast as Cobra Commander and Destro. All I ask is CC be more machiavellian and Destro have a lot more honor and dignity instead of a lovesick puppy.

  7. I am by no means a fan of the first GI JOE but I did like Zartan’s story arc with him gaining the ability to change face/form and putting him in position as president. With those pojts in place you could easily set up for the film to take GI JOE Renegades esque story line. I wish they would have bring the USS FLAGG back into play and make the Joes strength in their diversity not sci-fi gadgets. exo suit ..sigh..

As for the casting, isnt Ray Stevenson a little “big” to play an acrobactic ninja? Shouldnt u cast someone skilled in martial arts?

  8. What is really and truly sad and pathetic is the fact that the first G.I.Joe film ROYALLY SUCKED, but, now they are going to make another one.
Maybe the producers and directors felt that they didn’t show us just how lame their version of G.I.Joe truly was, so they decided to make another one just to reemphasize the point. Guys just to be clear on the point, we get it!!! You don’t know “joe” about G.I.Joe!!!

    • Its simple, if YOU think it sucks, don’t go see it. Just shut up and let us fans of the series, comic, and cartoons enjoy without your blubbering. Twit

      • Chris,

Don’t be so mad! My point was a valid one. The movie lacked ANY relativeness with the cartoon. If you were to go and see it without knowing who was playing who you would’ve thought everyone was on Cobra’s side! You couldn’t tell the difference between the two. I want the characters to look like they did in the comic or the cartoon more, not some made up futuristic versions. They looked completely silly!!!

  9. Ray Stevenson, martial arts?? I see him and think guns, explosives, and more guns…

Anyway, I like him as an actor, and am glad he’s getting roles regularly now. Nice to see some of the down-to-earth guys in Hollywood actually doing well…

  10. Ya know, i liked the first GI Joe movie. Perhaps the story line involves the rescue or escape of Cobra Commander and Destro from prison. And someone else behind the scenes is making the attempt on their behalf. the joes in the first and not appearing in the second could be written in as being on a different mission somewhere else.

I too, hated those silly suits they wore, the mechanical monstrosities that they were!

And i also agree on stevenson’s behalf, that he was indeed the best incarnation of the punisher to see the big screen….thomas jane was good too but war zone was closer to the actual material…AND it showed stevenson doing stealth moves as well.

  11. LOL! Firefly, Zartan and Storm Shadow against G.I Joe? Now what are they called now? the three stooges? Where is cobra commander, Destro and The Baroness? Maybe they went to Maui and went surfing with the sharks instead of joining this film project…

    • The Casting is not over…what da hell is wrong with you people, you don’t even know all the cast members yet, start talking about no Destro or Cammander after the film is in post production. And those guys aren’t in it…..then u can talk about who da Joe’s fight.

  12. I agree with Merciful Rao, the only thing Stevenson has to offer is his scowl that had him cast as the punisher, and we all know what happened to that film…

    • I’m sure that movie’s bad writing and bad directing had nothing to do with how bad the film was. Ray Stevenson had total creative control of the entire movie… ;-)

  13. firefly did not use that much martial arts in the cartoon any way. he was a man of sneak and explode action. great character, this can only improve the movie. this teen candy is going to kill it. looks like this guy will turn to justin bieber to draw in the girls. come on guys this is not a my little pony movie. it is action leave out the cute teenie boppers.

  14. this film will suck worse than a poo diaper sammich

I like Ray Stevenson though. He should be cast as Stannis in Game of Thrones (not a poo diaper sammich)

  15. Dreadnoks???

  16. The first one was awful and the second one sounds even worse.

  17. Gordon-levitt,Vosloo and Eccleston didn’t want to be part of this sequel.. Seems to me that this will be a dud.. The first GIJOE was okay even though they looked like they rented out Tony Stark’s disposable armors from his warehouse.. But with someone who directed a Justin Beiber film and all those Step Up films…That really makes me cringe at the thought of this movie…

  18. Of course Ray Stevenson got this part, but apparently i’m not most people because I think Thomas Jane was a better Punisher.

  19. I’m with you martin… Thomas Jane did a better job at being the punisher.. Punisher War Zone was all looks and action and Stevenson didn’t portray Castle with heart like Jane did…

  20. I agree that his Punisher was the only one that was watchable as a comics fan (except for the cheesy villain). As far as GI Joe goes, I just hope they realize focusing on one or two “lead” characters is missing the point of having a TEAM. Unless they *ahem*…do a Snake-eyes movie…that I will forgive.
