Stallone Not Making Rambo 5?

Sylvester Stallone had been talking up Rambo 5 for quite some time. There were reportedly two potential plots under development and it sounded as if Stallone was preparing to shoot the film later this year – once his work on The Expendables was complete.

Now, we’re hearing that Stallone will not be making Rambo 5!

Sheryl Main, the publicist for The Expendables has been keeping a blog chronicling the development of the star-studded film (which opens this summer) – and  she appears pretty close to the Stallone camp. Main recently posted the following comment on her blog – a comment that appears to state that there will be no more missions for John Rambo:

“A few months ago I mentioned Sly dropped a bombshell…that bombshell was…no Rambo 5…when he decides what his next move is I will update…”

Now, this may not mean that the Rambo franchise is dead and buried – but Stallone isn’t getting any younger (he’s now 63).

If The Expendables is a hit, Stallone has mentioned that he’d want to make a sequel or two. Since the new franchise covers similar ground as Rambo, it makes sense that he’d want to give his new baby some room to grow. After all, this isn’t the 1980s and there’s only so much audience out there for old-school action. In addition, more Expendables movies also means that Stallone doesn’t have to carry the films on his own – meaning that, as he ages, he can hand over more and more screen time to his younger cast-mates.

When Rambo 5 was first rumored it allegedly revolved around human trafficking in Mexico. Later, when Stallone first talked about the film, the slant was a little different –  the project was then being called The Savage Hunt. The new plot brought Rambo into science fiction territory as he hunted down a genetically modified super-soldier.

When fan reaction aired on the negative side, the plot was switched back to the Mexican storyline – and The Savage Hunt plotline was set as a film outside of the Rambo universe.

It’s possible Stallone has decided to move forward with production on The Savage Hunt instead of Rambo 5. After all, the actor hasn’t really delved into science fiction since – not since the ill-fated Judge Dredd in 1995 (I’ll not mention Spy Kids 3D). Then again, he might also produce his Death Wish remake (which has long been in development) or his Edgar Allan Poe biopic that was, at one point, set to star Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

Are you happy or disappointed that Stallone appears to have “retired” John Rambo? What should the actor/producer work on next?

  1. You have just broke my heart. Expendables was great but only because of Sly donot kill of Rambo you made my day when i finally seen a rambo film in the cinema dont end it like this. Remember when your pushed killings as easy as breathing,

  2. Sly is grt and I would love to see another Rambo movie!

  3. I am devastated! There has to be a 5! All great things have odd numbers. Okay maybe that isn’t entirely true BUT,…. I was really thought it was going to be a terrorist plot on the homeland when he returned. It’s perfect!!Please make it!

  4. He needs to keep his promise and make Rambo V. I don’t want Expendables II! Make Rambo V – and while you’re at it make Rocky 6 and make sure Rocky WINS!!!

  5. What more can be said about Rambo! The guy is an absolute hero, someone ive grown up with. I must have seen all his films 100 times, they never get boring. As for do we need another one…. corse we do! Although the last film could quite easily end the franchise, because it was beautifully filmed and written at the end, I do think we can squeeze just one more in for old times sake.

  6. I know there is a young Rambo look alike Nick Miller who just found out he is the son of John Rambo from his dying mother, Sarah Miller the missionary in Berma (Rambo 4) now living in LA. Sarah is caught in a gang related shooting, her son Nick (Young Rambo Clone) who is a UFC upstart is in Vegas fighting when he hears about his mother. Sarah finally tells Nick his father lives in Arizona. John Rambo at first glance cannot deny Nick is his son. The two Rambo’s now at Sarah’s side see passes, that is all it takes for the father son team to take to the drug invested streets of LA taking the law into their own hands. Nick Miller is “New Blood” Rambo V allows the legend (Stallone) to survive another generation training his only son, Nick Rambo for his real destiny. I met Sly’s clone.

  7. @bob Kaiser. no offense but that is an awful setting for Rambo’s son. i dont mind the idea of a son, BUT it could not be sarah’s seeing as they never had sex, and also John is too old now to have a son. but i don’t mind the idea of a young protege for Rambo to take the series into another generation. but not how you have it. also, a city is a terrible setting for Rambo. Rambo needs to be in the wild, like in Vietnam, that is where he thrives. plus, i’d rather see him set up traps and use his knife like in First Blood, I don’t like it when Rambo uses guns too much, and thats all it would be in the city. and… i’m not 100% sure on this but i dont think sarah lived in LA. so…. yeah.

    …but i really do want a Rambo 5

  8. i think that they should have more rambo movies but a different charecter like rambo’s son as a new rambo

  9. but be in like the iraq area doing black ops

  10. Please Stallone, one more Rambo!!!! I totally disagree with comments made regarding, “it’s not the 80′s and aundiences are smaller for action flicks”. By how much Rambo 4 grossed that is just not true. I believe we don’t have enough action movies and the thirst for them is very much alive and demanded. Expendables just makes that point.
Rambo 4 rivalled Rambo First Blood and in my opinion was just brilliant, maybe a bit too graphic.
Audiences clearly want another Rambo, however it has to be well thought out and come up with a great script. The suggested script of a sc-fi type film with Rambo would be a terrible decision and I have no idea how someone could possible think that would be good. It must be one last fight for Rambo, the best yet. Sequals are always risky, however Rambo 4 just proved risks can pay off well. In my opinion the Rambo character should be awakened by revenge, it could ddepict him settling with his family working on the ranch after the last film. Then a past enemy comes back and destroys his family home and leaves him for dead. He wakes up badly injured and sets about planning his last stand, getting revenge for one last time. Stallone should give us one more and then hang up the M16 for good.

  11. no disscusion just make another RAMBO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i dont care how :)

  12. 13. Come On Give us RAMBO 5… PLzzzz Stallone

  14. Stallone we need a Rambo V! I have seen every Rambo movie at least 75 times each. I was in the middle of watching Rambo III when i decided to see if there would be a 5th Rambo.

    • hit it even harder rambo in the fifth part. we love u.

  15. Please tell me it is not true. Rambo 4 saw him returned home to the U.S. That is a good start for another story and a new beginning for our hero. Rambo 5 will be a big hit with his fans as all his movies are. Don’t disappoint us, Sly!

  16. I would like to see just one more Rambo before retiring John Rambo. I agree with why he wouldn’t want to take on another movie with all the weight on him, but i know he can pull one last Rambo mission off well. Maybe bring in someone who he can hand over John’s role too as an ending to the Rambo saga. Rambo has always been my favorite flicks!!

  17. Just a comment that I would like to see another Rambo like the idea of hime taking on or out the drug smugglers crossing his family,s land, another case of where our goverment don’t care but rambo cars. As for who needs to be in it, Sly can still do it himself don’t need another star for help
