Is Rambo 5 Heading Back To Mexico?

rambo 5 sylvester stallone Is Rambo 5 Heading Back To Mexico?

By now you Rambo fans know about Sylvester Stallone’s plans for Rambo 5, which up until now has been tentatively titled The Savage Hunt. Basically, Rambo was going to be sent out to bring down a super-solider turned savage killing machine by a government experiment gone wrong. The official synopsis for the film revealed that this somewhat surprising choice of storyline was actually based on the novel Hunter by author James Byron Huggins.

We here at Screen Rant heard this development and pretty much had the same reaction “Weird… But Cool!” The thought of John Rambo denying life to a “half-human, half-abomination” super-creature seemed like a logical step – after watching bad guys get blown to bloody chunks in Rambo 4, it was obvious that mere humans could no longer stand against the godly might of Rambo.

So color us slightly disappointed as we now are getting a rumor whispered in our ear, stating that Rambo 5 is going to undergo a (reverse) script change.

Our source on this claims to be a regular reader of one of the top Stallone fan forums on the Web. He passed on a message allegedly left by Sly himself, letting fans know of the change in plot for Rambo 5. See for yourself:

From Sly

Hi Craig,

This is from Sly to your followers:

To all the loyal SZoners out there,

I’m letting you know that Rambo has changed course and the story about hunting the man/beast will be done using another character in the lead. RAMBO himself will be heading over the border to a violent city where many young women have vanished .

There will be blood.

Best,
Sly Stallone

The “Mexico” storyline is of course the previously conceived plot for Rambo 5, which found Rambo taking on human traffickers/Mexican drug cartels, in order to save the life of a young girl. If this note is real, and Stallone and Co. are in fact going back to the Mexico plot for Rambo 5, then it’s safe to conclude one of three things:

  1. Stallone and Co. felt that the Hunter-inspired super-soldier plot was too out of step with the Rambo universe.
  2. The Mexico storyline was more timely (and fitting) for a Rambo movie.
  3. All of the above, plus the fact that more money can be made by making BOTH films.

Hey, so long as it’s Stallone who suits up for the Hunter adaptation then I’m good with this switch(back). SOMEBODY needs to get a handle on this drug cartel/human trafficking mess, and it might as well be Rambo – somebody has to also get a handle on this rouge super-soldier mess, and it might as well be Rambo Sylvester Stallone.

Look, I just want to see Sly kill things (why do you think I’m going to see The Expendables next year?). Criminals, super-soldiers, death squads, drug dealers, whatevs… Some action heroes are just artists… Artists painting with bad guy blood…

What do you think – is our source on the money? Would it be prudent to keep Rambo looking like Rambo and save the exploits of Hunter for a separate franchise? Would you want to see Sly starring in and adaptation of  Hunter? Sound off and let us know.

Rambo 5 has been slated to start production in the spring of 2010. We’ll keep you posted on this story as it develops.

  1. i think the mexico storyline is safer-

but i gotta say id love to see rambo fight something badder than he is. even as crazy and farfetched as it sounds.

  2. @Kofi

“SOMEBODY needs to get a handle on this drug cartel/human trafficking mess, and it might as well be Rambo – somebody has to also get a handle on this rouge super-soldier mess, and it might as well be Rambo(strikethru) Sylvester Stallone.”

LOL! That really made me laugh. It is so true.

  3. So we’ll finally get that sequel to Taken!!!

  4. Didn’t AICN cover this already?

  5. Yes aicn did but ScreenRant confirms sources otherwise we get a Margaret Thatcher debacle like yesterday.

  6. “By now you Rambo fans no about…”

C’mon Kofi, shouldn’t it be “KNOW”?

Good article, though. Maybe the hunter/killer story can be “The Expendables 2.” LOL.

  7. Personally I’m glad they’re going with a more real world story. I wasn’t a fan of the super-soldier thing.

    @M.K.

Sorry it took us so long to get this story on the site.

    @Showtime

We mistakenly put “exclusive” in the title – shouldn’t have.

    Vic

  8. I’m happy with either storyline. I’m with you Kofi–I want to see Sly in Hunter in addition to Rambo 5

  9. All i can say is “THANK GOD”

  10. Always glad to give Screenrant the first scoop!

  11. @Vic

    No worries man.

  12. after hearing the movie might be based on hunter, i went along and read the book, and it sound awesome.
they could have kung le or donnie yen as the japanese samurai guy, and replace the chick with school boy, and there is a SAS soilder… bald guy from rambo 4 anyone ? hehehe

the hunter story would be cool if they didnt add the creature but rather a psycho path who escaped a migh end military base.

as for the mexican thing, it would be cool but i dont like the idea, there will of course be one scene where he jumps on something and starts killing hundreds of people just for the sake of it (and to save the movie from disaster like in 4)

either way im happy, been a rambo fan since i could speak hehehe

  13. I think the Mexico story line fits Rambo much better than the “Hunter” inspired concept. Hunter is more “sci-fi” and for me, having Rambo mixed-up with it is like seeing James Bond suddenly being beemed-up on Starship Enterprise. Hehe, imagine this scene:

Bond (Classic version): Computer, vodka martini please…shaken, not stirred!

    Or this:

Bond (Daniel Craig version): Computer, vodka martini please.

    Computer: Shaken or stirred?

Bond: Do I look like I give a damn?!!

Okay, sorry for that, couldn’t help it! But anyway, I wouldn’t mind seeing a separate movie version of Hunter. If Sly would star in it, I think he should refrain using the Rambo character in it.

    Just my two cents!

  14. This story makes much more sense and lines it up for another bloodbath like the previous. I didn’t care so much for the universal soldier dealo. Even though I’m sure there would have been plenty of casualties caught in the crossfire. Rambo deserves swarms of baddies to put down and what better than human traffickers. I’m in.

  15. in hunter all these military soldiers get screwed by the “creature” and the explanation of their deths is gruesome (hand tearing through chests, heads ripping off etc.) although it may seem sci-fi it really isnt (at least i dont think) the book when i borrowed it was under action not sci-fi, the only sci-fi thing is the creature and they could easily change that (movies change things all the time (harry potter ))

  16. How abt that creature turn into Universal Soldier plot where they use the dead soldier as test subject, and Rambo has to confront some of his ex-dead-comrades?

  17. bring ‘em both

  18. Rouge super-soldier mess? I agree, fighting trannies would definitely not sit well in the Ramboverse!

  19. I love Rambo films (not the whimpy 3rd)…I like the idea of Rambo going to Mexico with a good excuse to kill bad guys. Savage Hunt is not Rambo, but I would like to see Sly do more action/violent movies. Keep the gore in the script without tag-a-long comrades. Rambo should do it on his own, his a superhero!

  20. Still think he should be going into Afganastan to fight those he helped train in III with the set up that the cute little kid sidekick has grown into a badly bearded muslim fanatic terrorist version of Rambo and hides weapons in his filthy beard. Rambo Vs. Bearded Islamic Fanatic Rambo

But this Rambo Vs. Mexican drug- slave cartels is going to be goooooooood too. Some of those border towns are lawless and bloody with murders in the street in broad daylight and illigeal alien gangs roaming the streets armed liked militias. Rambo killing them would be nice too.

    • WOuld be great if he went after white scum NAzi in the west

Perfect as it should have been

  21. I can't wait to see Stallone gear up and take down a CREATURE in The Hunt.
I would love to see him take his shirt off and do some hand-to-hand combat as in the first 3 rambo movies.
As far as Rambo 5 goes…I'll be there opening night in support of the greatest actor of all time.
Stallone is the only actor, ever, who I will go see one of his movies without even knowing what it's about…he's the effin man and I hope he keeps making awesome movies for us to go see.
He is the only actor of his kind and hwood needs more actors like him. Stallone makes the larger than life movies that we all used to go see in the 80's and 90's and it is actors such as he that separate the 'actors' from the 'action hero's.'

  22. Would have loved the first story, kinda like First Blood…with him being not the hunted this time, more the hunter !

Otherwise from my feeling so far,I dislike the Mexico story !
Should have been something like Europe..Russia..or Bosnia …something like an Urban Jungle war zone between houses in a batled city or town anyway, let's wait and see!

  23. both would have been stupid. i'm SO happy!!!! rambo 08 was my F'N FAVORITE MOVIE!!!! i loved how the liberals hated it for the “racism” and “anti-humanism”. so unlike other movies today. and it looks like the next rambo will be even better. i hope it's just as violent. but the dialogue needs to be good like in the last one too. rambo is the greatest! everybody got what they deserved. even those stupid missionairys! lol

  25. I love the Mexico storyline, this is what he should have kept it all along, follows perfectly with his return to Arizona. He should fall for a Mexican Senorita working on his dad's ranch whose daughter is abducted by a drug cartel or “coyotes”. I live in AZ and I can tell you this is where the real current human atrocities are going on. Mexican gang violence has killed more people than ALL Al Qaida attacks combined ! Over 20 THOUSAND people confirmed murdered in the last 5 yrs as a result of Mexican border violence (drug cartels/human smuggling/kidnappings), and some in the most heinous manner imaginable, one guy had his face peeled off and sewn on a soccer ball.
Rambo needs to deal out some fictional justice since no-one is dealing out any real justice to these scumbags.
