Over a year ago we were bombarded with news of there possibly being a fifth Rambo movie – news that quickly transformed into a bizarre saga of rumors and misconceptions – and for once it wasn’t entirely the Internet’s fault.

It all started when it was announced that Rambo 5 had been greenlit. Then came a title (Rambo V: The Savage Hunt) along with a bizarre sci-fi/horror plot synopsis that involved Rambo and his young protege taking on a predatory monster created by government experiments. Before too long Stallone backed out, claiming there would be no more Rambo movies.

Despite that claim, promotional posters for Rambo V were displayed at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, and it was rumored that the studio could possibly make another Rambo without Stallone, either using the genetic monster story, or a previously rumored story involving Rambo fighting Mexican cartels. When that talk died down, it was then rumored that there could instead be a Rambo prequel, featuring a new actor playing a younger version of John Rambo. But that plan ultimately went nowhere as well.

And so, after that long and fruitless saga, talk about Rambo seemed to drop off…until now.

It now seems that Rambo 5 – now going by the title Rambo: Last Stand – is alive and well, after a conversation with Conan The Barbarian screenwriter Sean Hood revealed a juicy bit of info. As Hood told Fear Net:

I recently finished a first draft of Rambo: Last Stand (Rambo 5) for Millennium films, based on a story idea by Sylvester Stallone. Hopefully, Mr. Stallone will eventually have the time and the inclination to do another Rambo.

After this news hit the Interwebs, Empire did some fact-checking and discovered that not only was this a real thing, but that Stallone himself was involved in making it happen – despite his earlier claims that Rambo was done and over. As Sean Hood told Empire in reference to the matter:

“I met with Mr Stallone twice last year…He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he’d written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the Rambo saga…It’s more in line with the small-town thriller of First Blood.”

Will Stallone return for 'Rambo: Last Stand'?

It’s made clear in the article that the cartel and monster plotlines originally rumored for Rambo 5 have indeed been scrapped and thrown out; whatever this new script is, we haven’t heard mention of the details and Hood isn’t giving them up at this juncture.

It’s hard to get too excited, or invest too much speculation and/or opinion in Rambo 5 right now – a lot of us already did that once, and look where it got us: nowheresville. It’s certainly good to hear that the creature-feature story has been tossed, though the cartel story had potential; the notion of what Rambo’s “Last Stand” will entail is also intriguing, as is the the question of how Hood’s script would tie the events of this (alleged) final film to the experience of First Blood.

I’m sure that these questions (and more) will soon be addressed (and hopefully answered) in the coming months. For now, are you happy that Rambo 5 is back on, or were you content to let the franchise end with part IV?

  1. Very happy about this. Nice that Schwarzenegger’s next film is also titled Last Stand. I tell ya, these two…

  2. He’s 65 years old.
    what the hell.

    • He’s the Hulk Hogan of action movies. Can’t figure out that he’s too old to be doing this stuff.

    • He’s still one of the best action stars around…

  3. This is good new!!!

  4. “It all started when it was announced that Rambo 5 had been greenlit. Then came a title (Rambo V: The Savage Hunt) along with a bizarre sci-fi/horror plot synopsis that involved Rambo and his young protege taking on a predatory monster created by government experiments.”

The people in Hollywood really need to considering laying off the hard drugs. It’s funny though they wanted Stallone to basically make a Predator rip-off that sounds like about a dozen straight to cable/DVD movies that have been done.

  5. I could see this as having shades of Grand Torino. An old John Rambo pulled into another fight not of his making.

Then slaughtering hundreds with his saw-edged bowie knife.

    • Sorry, Gran Torino.

      • I agree..
Make it his last violent film – Hell, why not go find Brian Dennehy…

  6. Hollywood needs to have a pow-wow and have everyone agree to stop naming movies “last” and “final”

    • In Hollywood, even “Custer’s Last Stand” would have a sequel if it made enough money.

      • ^this +10000000

  7. If they want to continue the Rambo franchise so bad, make a prequel. They could make it a war movie, starring a younger actor as Rambo, which could continue into a franchise about his exploits, with the ending of the final film leading into the beginning of First Blood, bringing the franchise full circle. Or just reboot it.

  8. I would love to see a return to First Blood in a Gran Torino style featuring Rambo. Like that idea of him getting into a fight that’s not his own.

  9. I’ve said it before – the last film ended on such a perfect note that they should let this franchise lie. He came home, at peace at last… that was a great close to the series.

    • I 100% agree with you Vic, but then again, someone that has been where Rambo has been will always be haunted by the past (see PTS, or shell shock)… So IF they do make another movie with Sly as Rambo and not a younger actor for a prequel, then I think that Rambo should die…

That way, PTS/shell shock wont be affecting him… But only if they make another one with Sly…

Im actually in favor of a prequel WITHOUT Sly…

      Just my opinion…

      • I agree that if this stars Stallone again, it should have Rambo die in some heroic fashion, giving his life to same people but eradicating the enemy.

        • I feel the same way, John. Have it done in a way that has him ending up heroic, but also vanquishing his inner demons. I really enjoyed the last Rambo film, so I am not against this film. So glad they are not doing the “Predator-style” film.

    • i totally agree.
however, the reality is that if they make another…
      i would see it.
      they know this, the bastadges.

  10. im always down for another Rambo movie, hope sly confirms himself it and this is not just some rumor. but ya, give me another movie.

  11. I agree with Vic, the last movie ended quite nicely with Rambo finally getting home. There really is no reason to make another one, but hey Hollywood is fresh out of original ideas. We’re talking about an industry making movies about Battleship, Monopoly, I thought I heard rumors about Candyland as well but not sure. I’m also sure that someone in Hollywood is thinking of a way to make Slinky into a movie too. lol.

  12. rambo 4 had a perfect ending to the character – he finally comes to terms with who/what he is and by the end of the movie decides to leave war and chaos behind, and ventures to his dads farm to attempt at living a ‘normal’ life.

IF they make another rambo, it should be a prequel, set during the vietnam war, so we get a better understanding of why he’s so good at what he does (killing) and why he’s so psychotic.

    • jwalka,

Are you TRYING to get your comment deleted? I’ve removed the references to “morons” and “sheep.”

I know you know better, so I can only assume you’re just being rude on purpose.

  13. I have no problem with old actors continuing their work, (all the power to them) but there are some francises that need to die. Like Vic said Rambo 4 ended spot on and I agree, I dont mind Sly making movies but rehashing his signature roles is dumb in my opinion. Rambo is one thing but please not another Rocky as well. I loved Rocky Balboa, it was my favorite after I and II and I thought it ended perfectly.

  14. Great news that Rambo 5 is being made.

Stallone should return, without Stallone, there’s no Rambo.

Maybe in Rambo 5, he goes up against a super terriost where there’s lots of fight scenes, lots of explosion and lots of gunfights.

Rambo: Last Stand is a good film title.

  15. I still say LAST BLOOD would be the way to go…
Let Rambo’s last act echo his first one way back in Vietnam – show us the first moment he had to use violence, then let the “old-man version” go out the same way.
Dash o class in a pretty base franchise…
But regardless, I can’t help it – I want another “good” Rambo – like Planet of the Apes(before this new one) there’s only one actual good film in this franchise. Make it two..

  16. Get Uwe Boll to direct it. That would rock!

    • And Channing Tatum to star as Rambo Jr.. :-D

  17. please please get stalone to play rambo one more time… and please make rambo 5 the way it should be, like first blood.
lets have the story right, the setting and plot right and one final fight for the icon before he settles down in his own home in peace.

  18. Plot: rambo in a small town goes nuts, ala Rambo 1. That was my favorite. But this one he dies, to finish it off. Then reboot(with young actor) and show how he became so messed up. You could get a trilogy out of that.

  19. I’m surprised no one has mentioned the screenwriter at the heart of this story. Do we really want one of the jokers behind the new Conan farce to have any hand at all in a new Rambo?

    I certainly don’t.

  20. no sly count me out with sly ill pre order my ticket

  21. They need to stop. John finally went home. Perfect ending. Now, I love Rambo movies just as much as the next guy, but this seems nothing more than milking it.

    • No… Your wrong. they need to at least have one more go at it.

    • No dont listen to this guy we need another Rambo NOW PLEASE! I think the cartel from Columbia kidnapping his daughter is an ace story line. Just imaging the action people its mouth watering.

  22. leave Rambo alone he has come full circle and come home dont ruin it.

    • Uh, this is Hollywood we are talking about. You know, the ones who screwed up Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Terminator.

      • Terminator was mint

  23. lol, i wonder when this franchise will be going away?

    • …Although I’ll bet you’ll be first in line to get your ticket for a new one if it’s released.

  24. I’ll probably skip this. I love Rambo… but only the first two films. The 3rd and 4th ones weren’t very good, so I’m still waiting for a genuine First Blood Part III.

  25. LAST BLOOD!!

  26. I’m thinking in this one he has ditched the trademark Rambo survival knife, and instead is weilding a sword. One that he carries concealed IN HIS WALKING CANE that he uses to help him get around.

  27. I’m with doworksun88: I’m ALL for it if Sly’s a part of it and I’ll be there waiting in line when the theater doors open! …and so will most of you, regardless of your comments, because If you’re passionate enough to leave comments, you’re interested enough to see another Rambo film.

    • Correctamundo, Mike..

    • I’m gonna holla at that, Mike.

  28. There has to be a rambo 5. It all has to come together. Rambo has to make peace with himself, and his life. He finely came home and there is where it all started. That is where it all has to end. He has to find some kind of happenes. With all he went through. I know stallion knows that and thats the way he will end it. Just like the last rocky movie. That was an excellent ending. So should rambo.

    • There is loose talk about another Rocky coming.

  29. They should have a bang up action packed movie but somehow end it with Jonh sitting by a pond feeding ducks with his new and finally found lady love. as an old man he finally finds a simple peace.
