Ralph Fiennes’ ‘Skyfall’ Character Revealed At Last?

There is still a good deal of mystery surrounding the newest installment in the James Bond series, Skyfall, despite the basic plot line having already been revealed. However, actor Ralph Fiennes’ role remains perhaps the most intriguing puzzle piece that has yet to fall into place.

Rumors have long been circulating that Fiennes could be up to play iconic Bond antagonist Blofeld – or, rather, someone who is that character in all but name (for legal reasons). Similarly, there’s been speculation that Fiennes may be playing a figure from M’s (Judi Dench) past who is responsible for the MI6 being “under attack” and is somehow connected to the enigmatic villain being portrayed by Javier Bardem.

Fiennes has revealed a concrete detail about his Skyfall persona; not so surprisingly, additional information began circulating widely thereafter from a (supposed) trustworthy insider at EON productions. So, keeping all that in mind, only read ahead if you don’t mind being potentially spoiled for the reveal of Fiennes’ character – and remember, take all of this with a customary grain of salt.

Fiennes informed Daily Record that he’s playing a “government agent” in Skyfall, but refrained from saying anything else. However, Movieweb is reporting that the aforementioned EON insider told them that Fiennes is slated to become the new M when the current M (Dench) is forced out as head of the MI6, because of the deadly threat from her past; thereafter, Dench’s character is forced to train Fiennes’ newcomer to become the espionage organization’s new boss.

So, here’s the million dollar question: How likely is it that this rumor is true?

Well, we already know that Skyfall will mix things up in the Bond universe by featuring a youthful Q (Ben Whishaw) and incorporating a new agent named Eve (Naomie Harris) who is also rumored to become the new Moneypenny. Seeing how Daniel Craig has been approached to play 007 at least five more times after the 23rd James Bond flick, it makes all the more sense that the franchise’s producers would try and keeps things fresh by adding some new (acting) blood elsewhere; hence, the idea of bringing on a new M would fit with that approach.

Judi Dench confirmed for James Bond 23 Ralph Fiennes Skyfall Character Revealed At Last?

Dame Judi Dench as M

Dench has been portraying M since Goldeneye in 1995 and has become (for many people) the┬ádefinitive incarnation of the character. All the same, the 77-year-old Oscar-winner’s managed to lead an excellent run as the refined, but strong-willed and crafty MI6 head honcho; so, if this is indeed her last outing as the character (and remember, it’s still just a RUMOR right now) then at least she’ll have someone of Fiennes’ high-caliber serving as her replacement.

All will be revealed for certain when Skyfall hits U.S. theaters (no pun intended) on November 9th, 2012.

  1. It’s called Skyfall because a spy satellite falls from the sky and there is a frantic mission to recover it. That’s truly inspiring stuff.

    • I thought that was called ‘Skylab’ :P :)

      • I wonder if that wasn’t somehow the ‘inspiration’. I won’t pretend that I’m hugely looking forward to this.

  2. I saw Ben Whishaw in ‘…some trace of her’ at the National Theater and he was brilliant! Can’t wait to see him develop as a rising star.

Oh and Ralph Fiennes is pretty good too ;)

  3. “Dench has been portraying M since Goldeneye in 1995 and has become (for many people) the definitive incarnation of the character”

Not for me. Bernard Lee defined the character for me.

I like Dench as M and it was done deliberatley in the 90s to make turn Bond on its head by making his boss a woman. But now she acts more like his mother, taking away his passports and credit cards when he misbehaves.

I think it’s time for a new M. Michael Gambon perhaps.

    • I agree. Gambon would be an excellent choice.

  4. M: “OO7, the spy who lived, come to die!”

OO7: “You appear to have no nose sir!”

M: “The Russians stole it! …..It had absolutely nothing to do with Wizards!”

    • and the inter-webs wept with laughter!!!

      • Thanks for the sarcasm. ^-^

  5. That story about Craig being asked to play the part 5 more times was never confirmed. Pure scuttlebutt.

    • No, it was not scuttlebutt. Look, this is how it works: If the next Bond film is a success, and there’s a general feeling it will be, then they will offer Daniel Craig a deal to do five more films. However, if the film flops, the producers have the option of letting go of Craig or he can walk away gracefully, which is what almost happened with Quantum Of Solace. That’s why Craig has been a bit coy about his Bond tenure, he simply doesn’t want to jinx it. But if Skyfall ends up being wildly successful, then there will probably be long term plans set in motion for his involvement in the films, including a five picture deal, as well as talk of where they want the character(s) to go.

This is according to producer Michael G. Wilson.

  6. For all we know,
The Fiennes chracter could have orchestrated M’s downfall himself.
I am going to wait and see on this

    • I think that is quite likely. You don’t hire him and then not have him as a villain. He’ll turn out to be a baddie.

    • Exactly my thought as well. He’ll come in as the new M, and then he turns out to be a bad-ass villain who destroys the organisation from the inside to gain world domination. And if that’s the case, it will be bloody awesome imo! Mwuhahahaha!

      • Yeah, he’s got to be a villain, even as a government agent. And this whole talk of being the new M doesn’t make any sense, not with Albert Finney in the cast, but he’s not going to be the new M either.

Bond’s relationship with M is too new, there’s no way they’re going to get rid of Judi Dench this early, unless they’re forced to for health reasons, but it seems to me if that happened they’d just recast her with another female actor and have it be the same character. It sounds too much like they’re going to further define and cement Bond and M’s relationship with this film, after all there’s lots of 00′s, but Bond and M must have a relationship that is unique in the Mi6 and this film will showcase it.

Jeez almighty tho’, if they don’t take this opportunity to bring back Blofeld they’re really blowing it, in my opinion…

  7. He’ll make the perfect bad guy, everytime i see this guy i think about his character in Red Dragon which still creeps me out after nine years.

  8. Look forward to what they come up with. I don’t “Skyfall” is a bad title. I like the single word titles as a change-up in the Bond series.

    • Yeah, for reasons I can’t put my finger on the title Skyfall rubbed me the wrong way initially, but then it started to feel Goldfinger/Thunderball-ish and I warmed to it…

  9. I like Ralph fiennes as M because that Judy dench is finished

  10. Ok, I’m still not entirely happy about Daniel Craig as Bond but if Judi Dench is gone, then forget it, I’ll give up on 007 and I was hooked from the moment I saw Connery flick open his lighter and say “Bond, James Bond” with the 007 theme music quietly playing in the background.

I’d love to see Ralph Fiennes as a good guy. After him brilliantly playing Voldemort in the Harry Potters, it’d be refreshing and not to mention prevent him from being typecast as the British Baddie…..

  11. Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!!!

  12. I saw Skyfall today. Ralph will be new M, because Judi gets killed by Barden.

Skyfall is the name of the property where Bond lived as a child.

Enough with spoilers, go see the movie, it is awesome!

  13. It must be exhausting playing the bad guy in bond since, what year was diamonds are forever,
